What I learned about SEO (while building a WordPress Theme)David Zimmerman
A few years ago I created my own WordPress theme. It's not that I'm a web designer (or a developer, for that matter). I just wanted to understand the platform better. While working on this project, I learned several things about doing SEO on a WordPress website. I've compiled these lessons into this presentation.

On-site SEO considerations including Google Webmaster Central, URLs, redirects, content heirarchy, robots.txt, indexing issues, crawl issues, XML sitemaps, HTML sitemaps, internal linking, external linking and page load times. Presented at Web 2.0 Expo New York September 27, 2010 by Rhea Drysdale.

HTML5 and CSS3 have arrived and they are redefining rich, standards-based web development. Features previously the exclusive domain of browser plug-ins can now be added to web applications as easily as images. Understanding the new power that these standards define, as well as the rapidly increasing power and speed of JavaScript in modern browsers and devices is essential. These slides accompany a full-day workshop, where attendees are guided through the new features in HTML5 and CSS3, with special attention to how these technologies can be used today in new and old browsers.
What is the current status quo of the Semantic Web as first mentioned by Tim Berners Lee in 2001?
Not only 10 blue links can drive you traffic anymore, Google has added many so called Knowlegde cards and panels to answer the specific informational need of their users. Sounds complicated, but it isn’t. If you ask for information, Google will try to answer it within the result pages.
I'll share my research from a theoretical point of view through exploring patents and papers, and actual testing cases in the live indices of Google. Getting your site listed as the source of an Answer Card can result in an increase of CTR as much as 16%. How to get listed? Come join my session and I'll shine some light on the factors that come into play when optimizing for Google's Knowledge graph.

How to Discover Marketing Opportunities For Any WebsiteRaven Tools
A client or prospect isn’t interested in paying you if you can’t tell them what specific marketing efforts will help them make money.
Discovering marketing opportunities and deciding which opportunities will have the most impact is crucial to any marketing campaign.
Small projects can offer large rewards. For examples, when conducting website research, you should always run an SEO audit to discover technical issues. If a robots.txt file is incorrectly setup, fixing it could be the difference between your client’s website being indexed in search results or not.
There are unique challenges to website research. First of all, you may not have access to accurate traffic or rankings data if you’re conducting research on a prospect or competitor.
But even without inside knowledge of a website, you can discover marketing opportunities if you know where to look.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Key Trends Shaping the Future of Infrastructure.pdfCheryl Hung

The key trends across hardware, cloud and open-source; exploring how these areas are likely to mature and develop over the short and long-term, and then considering how organisations can position themselves to adapt and thrive.
Like all living things, content needs the right environment to thrive.\n
With the right environment, content can not only thrive, but also propagate.\n
Start with Information Architecture.\n
Define and refine the keywords that best match your target audience.\n
Develop your navigation and site structure based on your keyword research.\n
There are many more aspects to good IA. Read Adam Audette’s SEO Guide to IA for more details. It’s a few years old, but still very relevant.\n
Next step is to use Living Standard HTML (aka HTML5) to build your page. http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipage/\n
Utilized semantic elements to communicate to search engines what your content is (navigation, header, article, etc....).\n
An example of how a typical page would look using semantic elements.\n
HTML5 Boilerplate is one of the best places to help you get started with Living Standard HTML.\n
Site speed is a ranking factor, so work on making your pages load fast for visitors.\n
This is the best caching plugin for WordPress.\n
W3 Total Cache supports AWS CloudFront, which is one of the best ways to serve images and other data worldwide.\n
PNGCrush is an amazing tool that will significantly reduce the size of your PNG images.\n
I recommend Pair Networks if you want a trusted, fast and affordable hosting provider.\n
After making the speed enhancements to your site, test it with GTmetrix.\n
If your site has good traffic and has been in existence for several months, Google Webmaster Tools may already have a speed report for it.\n
Use structured data for your content. It’s designed for people and computers.\n
This is an example of how structured data can be used in search results.\n
The original structured data formats were Microformats and RDFa. However, Living Standard HTML has introduced Microdata, which is being embraced by Google and other search engines.\n
The major search engines have created a resource for microdata, providing schemas for the different types of structured data.\n
Schema.org provide a VERY long list of schemas, but learning how to use microdata can be confusing and overwhelming.\n
We created Schema Creator to help people better understand how to use microdata.\n
Be sure to include Social META Data on your content pages.\n
Facebook utilizes the Open Graph Protocol, which will enhance and control how your content is shared.\n
This is an example of the code and how it controls what data is shared on Facebook.\n
This is an example of the code and how it controls what data is shared on Facebook.\n

Over 10 million people are using Evernote to archive and share online content. Take advantage of their Site Memory code.\n
This is an example of a content page on Evernote’s site.\n
When a user clips the page, it uses the Site Memory code to correctly clip the content, and nothing else.\n
Users can then share the content at a later time. Links also remain active in archives, which means people may still click on an affiliate link directly from Evernote.\n
Use social buttons and comments on your content pages.\n
This example includes buttons in every possible location. However, you should consider only using sharing options that best fit your audience.\n
Facebook comments is a great way to clean up the quality of your comments, and to also drive more traffic to your site from Facebook.\n
The comments show up in notifications.\n
The comments also appear on the Timeline and news feed.\n
\n
Forbes pulled an article that provided evidence from Google that the +1 button will be a ranking factor.\n
You should be using the +1 button on your pages. Here’s a link to button configuration page.\n
This page included the text for all of the leaves and apples, along with links to those pages. http://www.b2bbloggers.com/blog/seeing-the-forest-through-the-blog-trees/\n
Use http://wufoo.com/ or http://www.aweber.com/ to capture email addresses. Then periodically send out newsletters highlighting new content. It will increase your repeat visits and will also bring in new visitors, because the newsletter can be forwarded to their friends.\n
Use http://www.slideshare.net/ to publish your presentations, and include active links in your slides. Slideshare has become an excellent source for site and affiliate traffic. Also consider using https://www.stumbleupon.com/pd/ Paid Discovery for building exposure to new, high quality content. Their algorithm rewards good content, reducing your overall costs to promote your content.\n
