Sensing-as-a-Service: Prepare for the Next Business Model for Internet of Things

Once we are able to categorize the ownership of data on the Cloud, we will be able to offer "Sensing-as-a-service" -- that is, the ability to provide a free or chargeable service to any person who wishes to view or manipulate the data. This presentation discusses the benefits of IOT-as-a-Service, including harnessing the creativity of application developers, participatory sensing, reducing the cost of data acquisition, pay-per-use cloud computing, and more. It is also possible to aggregate different sensor data sources and create many innovative applications such as combining between parking sensor data and public transport data, between environmental data and flood detection data, between river quality data and fertility of soil data.
An IOT service provider will be able to provide such services, thus opening many opportunities to generate new ways of monitoring and managing valuable assets. This seems to be the next wave of Cloud services where "Sensing-as-a-Service" will become the new IOT business model. The presentation will provide a different perspective on how to monetize IOT for business executives, who are interested in utilizing IoT applications to increase efficiency and build new business models.
Guest Lecture on IOT for Taylor's University (April 15, 2015) - Things that are connected to the Internet can be smarter than you think. There can be embedded intelligence to the device but there are time, a higher processing power is required in the cloud. But when you aggregate various kinds of data from multiple sources, it will bring better insights that you might not have the ability to find out if its data resides in silos. To build smarter world, we need smarter people to make it work.

Government agencies are looking to implement digital strategies, develop their talent pool with digital skills and promote services that address citizens' requirements.
If you have somehow missed the hype, the Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast-growing constellation of internet-connected sensors attached to a wide variety of 'things'. Sensors can take a multitude of possible measurements, Internet connections can be wired or wireless, while 'things' can literally be any object to which you can attach or embed a sensor. If you carry a smartphone, for example, you become a multi-sensor IoT 'thing', and many of your day-to-day activities can be tracked, analysed and acted upon.
Many of the conversations taking place around the IoT are incomplete without a mention of big data. Big data is characterised by “4 V’s”: volume, variety, velocity and veracity. That is, big data comes in large amounts (volume), is a mixture of structured and unstructured information (variety), arrives at (often real-time) speed (velocity) and can be different levels of uncertainty (veracity).
As organizations step into IoT, they must understand the symbiotic relationship between IoT and big data. Just like with any big-data play, merely collecting the data isn't enough. The data must be processed and analyzed to derive meaningful insights, and those insights must drive actionable steps that can improve the business.
What that means is that, without Big Data, the IoT can offer an enterprise little more than noise. But wait…! On the other hand, without IoT, the Big Data is little more than any other software lying idle. Actually you need two to Tango. That’s when you get the perfect marriage!
