The document discusses the challenges and opportunities for telecommunications service providers in embracing the Internet of Things (IoT). It notes that while telecoms have traditionally focused on connectivity, IoT requires end-to-end solutions across devices, networks, platforms and applications. The document outlines a path for telecoms to evolve from basic connectivity players to full IoT service providers and suggests approaches like sensing-as-a-service to encourage adoption, innovation and stakeholder collaboration in building IoT ecosystems.

Sensing-as-a-Service: Prepare for the Next Business Model for Internet of Things
Day 1 - Tuesday, April 21, 2015
9:50 - 10:15 am
Once we are able to categorize the ownership of data on the Cloud, we will be able to offer "Sensing-as-a-service" -- that is, the ability to provide a free or chargeable service to any person who wishes to view or manipulate the data. This presentation discusses the benefits of IOT-as-a-Service, including harnessing the creativity of application developers, participatory sensing, reducing the cost of data acquisition, pay-per-use cloud computing, and more. It is also possible to aggregate different sensor data sources and create many innovative applications such as combining between parking sensor data and public transport data, between environmental data and flood detection data, between river quality data and fertility of soil data.
An IOT service provider will be able to provide such services, thus opening many opportunities to generate new ways of monitoring and managing valuable assets. This seems to be the next wave of Cloud services where "Sensing-as-a-Service" will become the new IOT business model. The presentation will provide a different perspective on how to monetize IOT for business executives, who are interested in utilizing IoT applications to increase efficiency and build new business models.

Guest Lecture on IOT for Taylor's University (April 15, 2015) - Things that are connected to the Internet can be smarter than you think. There can be embedded intelligence to the device but there are time, a higher processing power is required in the cloud. But when you aggregate various kinds of data from multiple sources, it will bring better insights that you might not have the ability to find out if its data resides in silos. To build smarter world, we need smarter people to make it work.

Next generation tech trend for global critical communication standardYi-Hsueh Tsai
Today commercial cellular networks and dedicated public safety systems are two separate technology families for providing terrestrial wide-area wireless communications. With NPSTC, TCCA and ETSI Technical Committee TETRA supporting LTE there is now a clear global consensus that it will be the global standard for next generation broadband public safety networks. In order to provide the best service to both communities, they are establishing common technical standards offers advantages to both communities. Work underway in Release 12 of 3GPP LTE standards will enhance LTE to meet public safety application requirements. The public safety community gets access to the economic and technical advantages generated by the scale of commercial cellular networks, and the commercial cellular community gets the opportunity to address parts of the public safety market as well as gaining enhancements to their systems that have interesting applications to consumers and businesses. Developing the ecosystem also requires each country and user community to develop the right government policy, commercial environment and spectrum plan. Those plans and works are undertaken outside 3GPP’s technical standards area.

Smart Cities that don't go "bump" in the night: delivering interoperable smar...Rick Robinson
I gave this presentation at the launch of the British Standards Institute's development of standards for interoperability between Smart Cities systems. It draws on my experience delivering large-scale, standards-based technology architectures. Whilst Open Standards will be absolutely crucial to the delivery and operation of interoperable, open Smart Cities systems, they are not a panacea, and it's vital that we're aware of their limitations as well as their value.
The rapidly advancing mobile communication technology and the decrease in costs make it possible to incorporate mobile technology into home automation systems. The aim of this project is to develop a system that will provide remote control of home appliances and also provide security against intrusion when the home host is not at home. We propose a mobile-based home automation system that consists of a mobile phone with windows or android platform, raspberry pi, topping pi for led instead of home appliance, fire sensor, and proximity sensor, relay. Led is controlled by the raspberry pi, which operates according to the user commands received from the mobile phone via Cortana (windows platform) and an application (android platform). In our proposed system the raspberry pi will receive command from cloud services like Microsoft Azure for Windows platform and MQTT for Android platform created by user from mobile app. We have also ensure the security aspects which includes intrusion detection using proximity sensor and fire alarm using fire sensor. All sensors are connected to raspberry pi. If any of the previously mention event occurs it will immediately inform user through text sms and also email notification.

If you have somehow missed the hype, the Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast-growing constellation of internet-connected sensors attached to a wide variety of 'things'. Sensors can take a multitude of possible measurements, Internet connections can be wired or wireless, while 'things' can literally be any object to which you can attach or embed a sensor. If you carry a smartphone, for example, you become a multi-sensor IoT 'thing', and many of your day-to-day activities can be tracked, analysed and acted upon.
Many of the conversations taking place around the IoT are incomplete without a mention of big data. Big data is characterised by “4 V’s”: volume, variety, velocity and veracity. That is, big data comes in large amounts (volume), is a mixture of structured and unstructured information (variety), arrives at (often real-time) speed (velocity) and can be different levels of uncertainty (veracity).
As organizations step into IoT, they must understand the symbiotic relationship between IoT and big data. Just like with any big-data play, merely collecting the data isn't enough. The data must be processed and analyzed to derive meaningful insights, and those insights must drive actionable steps that can improve the business.
What that means is that, without Big Data, the IoT can offer an enterprise little more than noise. But wait…! On the other hand, without IoT, the Big Data is little more than any other software lying idle. Actually you need two to Tango. That’s when you get the perfect marriage!

The IoT Food Chain – Picking the Right Dining Partner is Important as presented at the IoT Inc Business' fourteenth Meetup. See: http://www.iot-inc.com/internet-of-things-value-chain-meetup/
In our fourteenth Meetup we have Dean Freeman, Research VP at Gartner presenting “The IoT Food Chain – Picking the Right Dining Partner is Important”.
Presentation Abstract
The Internet of Things means many different things to different people. What is key about the IoT is there is a distinct food chain that runs from the silicon devices to the services and then back. The level of success you will have in the IoT is heavily dependent upon where you fit in the food chain, and if you have the capability to move up the chain or across the chain into different verticals. In this presentation we will explore the food chain, what is important and what steps need to be taken to succeed in the world of the IoT.

f you offer a service on the web, odds are that someone will abuse it. Be it an API, a SaaS, a PaaS, or even a static website, someone somewhere will try to figure out a way to use it to their own needs. In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.

This presentation, created by Syed Faiz ul Hassan, explores the profound influence of media on public perception and behavior. It delves into the evolution of media from oral traditions to modern digital and social media platforms. Key topics include the role of media in information propagation, socialization, crisis awareness, globalization, and education. The presentation also examines media influence through agenda setting, propaganda, and manipulative techniques used by advertisers and marketers. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of surveillance enabled by media technologies on personal behavior and preferences. Through this comprehensive overview, the presentation aims to shed light on how media shapes collective consciousness and public opinion.
