The Epidemic Of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
Introduction
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe and often deadly illness named after a river in the Democratic
Republic of Congo (formerly Zaïre) where it was first identified in 1976 with a high case
fatality rate lying between 50 and 90%. Outbreaks between 1972 and 2007 are shown in Table 1.
The disease п¬Ѓrst came into the limelight in 1976 in ZaГЇre and Sudan in 1976 [17]. Its origin is
still unknown and it is widely believed that Ebola virus is transmitted to humans from discrete life
cycles in animals or insects, but regardless of the original source. Person to person transmission is
the means by which Ebola outbreaks and epidemics progress. Bioterrorism threats as well as
emergence of new pandemic and drug resistant variants of known infections require development of
the tools that would adequately predict occurrence of epidemics, assess efficiency of
countermeasures, and optimize the efforts directed towards provision of biological safety.
Mathematical modeling has emerged as an important tool for gaining understanding of the
dynamics of the spread of infectious diseases. The need of accurate models describing the epidemic
process are vital, because infectious diseases outbreaks disturb the host population and has
п¬Ѓnancial and health consequences. There is also the need to use sound statistical analysis
methods to test the п¬Ѓt of such models to observed data to account for uncertainties by means of
probabilistic models.

Gulf War Air Defense Essay
The Role of Air Defense in the Gulf War Throughout the history of Air Defense Artillery (ADA),
innovative steps were made for the technological advance in weaponry to defend our skies and
ground forces. The diverse history and continuous research and development of air defense
systems played a vital role in the safety of ground troops and foreign civilians during the Persian
Gulf crisis. Though not always in the forefront of battle, ADA had its own vital roles that it played
from the time of its birth, and it was no different during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield
when necessity helped to bring about the evolution of the PAC II Patriot missile. With its history
woven in every American war since the establishment of the United States Army in 1775, the ADA

The impact made by ADA forces spanned over many countries, the main ones being Germany,
Israel, Turkey and Iraq. Using their newest developed missiles, Patriot Antitactical ballistic
missile Capability, phase 1 (PAC 1) and Patriot Advanced Capability 2 (PAC 2), the Iraqi army
had nothing as a comparable counterpart (Burr, 2001). These missiles were 17 feet, 5 inches in
length, had a warhead with 221 pounds of high explosive, and could fly at Mach 3 up to 78,000
feet in altitude with a range of 43 miles (Leyden, 1997). The radar, control station, and launchers
were all connected via computer, activating when a launch was detected and the highest
probability of a kill [was] obtained (Burr, 2001). The newer PAC 2 missiles were capable of self
guidance with track via missile software and were more effective than their PAC 1

Assessment in Music Education has been a hot topic for...
Assessment in Music Education has been a hot topic for some time now. Questions have arisen
about what to assess, how to assess and even questioning whether to assess at all. Pinpointing the
issues at hand is the first task in answering these questions but of course, there are different opinions
on where the issues start in Music education. Since the early 2000 s, the education system has
adopted standards on the federal, state and local levels in an effort to help ensure a standard
proficiency. From No Child Left Behind to most recently the CCS (Common Core Standards) has
been introduced to states to ensure every student in the USA gets the same education and
assessment from Washington to Florida. Due to the stress on assessment,... Show more content on

Essay Effects On NyQuill
Nyquil
The power of Nyquil is sometimes overlooked as just another sinus medication or cold and flue
relief. What is unnoticed is the power this medication prevails. A lot of people take Nyquil for its
purpose but some tend to abuse its purpose and use it for other problems, such as taking advantage
of its drowsy feeling it gives you when consumed. This is a drug that is most popular on today s

Beach Boys Caroline
For this week s listening journal, I listened to Caroline No by The Beach Boys. There are many
characteristics of this piece that stood out to me, such as the relationship between the lyrics and
the musical quality and the musical elements that set the tone of the music. At the exposition of
Caroline No there is an eerie drum and cymbal introduction that has a sort of call and response
relationship. The cymbals would play a short melody and the drum beat would follow, this
exchange occurred a couple of times. This exchange between the cymbals and the drums made
the piece seem melancholic and mysterious and sets the mood for the rest of the song. The
quality of the voice was interesting because it was unlike most songs of The Beach Boys I have
heard of before. Throughout the song, The Beach Boys have a slow and relaxing tempo that does
not shift as the piece progresses. For the most part, the tempo remains steady and slow. This steady
tempo is accompanied by lyrics that relate to the overall melancholic mood of the song. The song
talks about a girl named Caroline that used to be a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the first verse, at the end of each line there is rhyme. For example, where did your long hair
go, where is the girl that I used to know, how could you lose that happy glow, oh Caroline no.
The words go, know, glow and no all rhyme with each other. This is also present in the second
verse between the words away and say. Furthermore, the last word of each line is sung with
melisma. For instance, the word know is sung with several notes to one syllable. This musical
element adds to the smooth and earthy timbre of The Beach Boys. Also, there is falsetto and
harmony throughout Caroline No. The Beach Boys appear to sing above their normal range and
this further contributes to the smooth and melancholic musical quality. All the singers in The
Beach Boys sing in harmony to a beat in

8. Differentiate between the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid effects of prednisone.
Mineralocorticoids=
The name mineralocorticoid derives from early observations that these
hormones were involved in the retention of sodium, a mineral. The primary endogenous
mineralocorticoid is aldosterone, although a number of other endogenous hormones (including
progesterone and deoxycorticosterone) have mineralocorticoid function.

Aldosterone acts
on the kidneys to provide active reabsorption of sodium and an associated passive reabsorption of
water, as well as the active secretion of potassium in the principal cells of the cortical collecting
tubule and active secretion of protons via proton ATPases in the lumenal membrane of the
intercalated cells of the collecting tubule. This in turn results in an increase of blood pressure and
blood volume.

Glucocortiocoids=
Glucocorticoids (GC) are a class of steroid hormones that bind to the
glucocorticoid receptor, which is present in almost every vertebrate animal cell.

GCs are
part of the feedback mechanism in the immune system that turns immune activity (inflammation)
down. They are therefore used in medicine to treat diseases that are caused by an overactive
immune system, such as allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases and sepsis. GCs have

Letter To Birmingham Jail Summary
Martin Luther King Junior was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a key leader in
the Civil Rights Movement. King wrote and delivered many inspiring and moving speeches. In
addition to speeches King wrote several letters including, Letter from Birmingham Jail, in which
discussed the great injustices that were occurring towards the African American community in
Birmingham. To justify his aspirations for racial justice and equality, Martin Luther King Junior
uses the emotional, ethical and logical appeals. In this paper, I will be discussing the cause and
effect of the significant excerpt, supporting my claims with textual evidence and will be providing
commentary about the intended effect. First of all, the very first line of King s letter was appealing
and grabbed the attention of the audience. King writes, While confined here in the Birmingham city
jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities unwise and untimely. (King,
1963) King draws the attention of the church leaders to the dungeons of the jail,forcing... Show

Logos is one of the strongest appeals in his letter, critical as it helps and ensures that the reader
establishes trust and confidence in the writer. Martin Luther King makes use of his experiences
and the characters he has encountered in his life to writing his letter. For instance, Luther refers
to St. Augustine who says that an unjust law is no law at all. He also refers to Paul in the Bible
when he states that like Paul, he must react to the Macedonian call for help. In addition, he also
refers to a number of his own life experiences, stating that Lamentably, it is an historical fact that
privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily (King Jr., 1968). This brings out King
as a caring person ready to help society. Using logical appeals helps to develop the reader s

Side Effects Of Lamictal
One of such drugs is called Lamictal. It is used to treat epilepsy and it is also used for treating
long term bipolar disorder. Side effects of Lamictal include dizziness, headaches, double vision,
coordination problems, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting. A large portion of people also
experience drowsiness, coughing, sore throats, stomach pains, insomnia, tremors, back pain,
fatigue, indigestion, bronchitis, diarrhea, fever, constipation, chest pains and weight loss. A
number of people experience more serious side effects, like worsening of seizures, depression,
bleeding, yellow eyes/skin, muscle pain, different allergic reactions, rashes(a Lamictal rash can
be a life threatening problem due to infection) and in a number of people it can also lead to a
suicide attempt. The last one is a severe threat, a lot of people underestimate the degree of suicide
attempts. In fact over 1.1 million Americans attempt suicide every year, it s so bad, that 1 out of 14
Americans knows someone who committed suicide last year. Woldwide the numbers are even
worse, the number of suicide attempts jumps up to an astonishing 10 20 million. To put this in

Does The Percentage Of Fat Affect The Height Of Ice Cream
How Does the Percentage of Fat in Milk Affect the Height of Ice Cream?
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to determine how different types of milk and cream, with
different percentages of fat, affect the height of the resulting ice cream.
Background Information Fats are lipids, which are organic compounds composed of hydrogen,
carbon, and oxygen. Most fat molecules consist of three fatty acid tails and a glycerol. Fatty acid
tails are made of hydrogen and carbon, the way that they are arranged determines the type of fat.
There are two broad categories of fats saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats contain only single
bonds between carbons, while unsaturated fats contain double or triple bonds. When saturated, they
are filled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the ingredients are mixed together, the fat particles are disturbed and broken apart. Air is
distributed into the mixture and held in place between the fat molecules to create a smooth
texture ( The Science of Ice Cream , PhysicsBuzz). At first, these products are close to room
temperature, conversely, the end product is a frozen dessert. To do this, the mixture must be
cooled past its freezing point. The ice is what ultimately freezes the cream. However, since the
mixture is not just pure water, which freezes at 0В° Celsius, the freezing point must be cooler.
Freezing point depression is a colligative property where more solute is added to the solvent. In
this case, salt is the solute and the ice/water is the solvent. If the concentration of the solution is
increased, consequently, the freezing point will decrease to be lower than that of the usual. The
new change will then allow the ice to absorb the heat and melt, while transferring the coldness to
the ice cream. When the ice constantly comes in contact with the salt crystals, by stirring,
churning, or other methods, it becomes cooler because of the interaction between them. By
lowering the temperature of the ice and salt mixture, the ice cream is able to harden and take
shape because it still freezes at 0В° Celsius and it is being cooled down to reach that

Role of Women During and After the Age of Revolutions Essay
There have been many stereotypical views and misconceptions about the role of women during
and after the age of revolutions. Although the role of women did change, it is important to
understand their position before the revolutions in order to wager how their role changed and of
course, to what extent. It would be unrealistic to assume that all women during this period fell into
one category. There are many factors to consider and so it is vital to address how different types of
women behaved in their varied working and living environments.
In pre industrial Europe the life of a single woman can be regarded as extremely difficult from an
economic perspective. Most single women, irrespective of age, belonged to a family, ... Show more

The French Revolution was going to make the lives of all Frenchmen better, why not for the
women as well? That is exactly how Olympe De Gouges a devoted enthusiast of the French
Revolution felt. She saw that there was something more to reach for. The stirring winds of the
revolution blew back the curtains and showed women that they could and should be living a life
with the same opportunities and rights that men have.
Olympe De Gouges wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Citizens, her work
was echoing the Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen. She wrote this statement in
order to claim equal legal rights for women and the protection of civil rights among wives and
mothers. Olympe De Gouges goal was to open the eyes of women that they haven t gained any
advantages in the French Revolution, that women need to summon the forces of reason against
their hopeless affectation of supremacy. According to the Declaration of the Rights of Woman
and the Citizens Olympe De Gouges says it is in your power to overturn them. What she means
by them are the men that stand in their way of equality, that the old regime is over with and it s
time to be seen something else other than ...a brainless person (p.99). In the declaration she talks
about the life of a women born into a rich family as well as a women born into a poor family, how
both differ that in a rich family the women gains equality

Stress And Oxidative Stress
Aerobic organisms need molecular oxygen (O2) for respiration or oxidation of nutrients to obtain
energy. There are some reactive by products of cellular respiration, derived from molecular
oxygen, that are generated continuously in cells grown aerobically, such as hydrogen peroxide
(H2O2) superoxide anion radical (O2 ), and the highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH).These
reactive oxygenspecies (ROS) are essential for various functions such as homeostasis and cell
signaling but an imbalance in favor of reactive oxygen species results in oxidative stress (OS)
(Kashmiri et al.,2014). Oxidative stress (OS) result in interference in the functioning of biological
systems that maintain levels of environmentally produced reactive oxygen species (ROS), by
readily detecting and detoxifying them (Lucana et al., 2012). Living organisms have adopted
mechanisms to protect themselves against oxidative stress, by producing enzymes such as catalase
and superoxide dismutase, small proteins like thioredoxin and glutaredoxin, and molecules such as
glutathione ( Cabiscol et al.,1999). Metallo enzymes such as superoxide dismutases are the primary
antioxidant enzymes that protect cells from oxidative damage of superoxide radicals, by catalyzing
dismutation of superoxide (O2 ) to hydrogen peroxideand oxygen. Superoxide dismutases, as name
suggests dismutes superoxide. Dismutation reaction is that in which two equal but opposite
reactions occur on two separate molecules. SOD takes two

State of Racism and Gender Discrimination
State of Racism and Gender Discrimination
What is discrimination? Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of a different person or groups
of people based on certain characteristics. In the United States there are seven protected
characteristics or classes that are defined by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age
Discrimination Employment Act, and the American Disabilities Act that can not be discriminated
against: race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, and disability. This paper focuses on two of
the protected classes: race and gender discrimination.

These requirements are important to becoming a fire fighter and many argue that they are more
than necessary. However, this does not mean that the fire department does not want to work
with women. It is just the policy to set the standards high. Another interesting example: A male
employee was fired by his employer because he refused to work at night ( Small Business
Encyclopedia 2002). This company had a policy saying that women did not have to work at
night because the company was located in a high crime area. The male employees had to work
the night shifts for the company, while the women employees did not. The male employee in
question filed a suit under Title VII against his employer claiming sexual discrimination. The
company claimed that several female employees would quit if they were forced to work at
night. The company also claimed the policy was a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ).
This case is interesting because BFOQ can be used as a defense to allow certain discrimination.
BFOQ is an exception provided by Title VII for jobs that require a specific religion, sex, national
origin, or age as a reasonable necessity for normal operations of a business. Although BFOQ
applies to the fire department qualifications, the courts deemed that the company who asked only
its male workers to take the night shift was could not use BFOQ as a valid defense ( Small Business

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is an important micronutrient that is involved in the metabolism of calcium and
phosphorous, and helps establish strong bone health (1). Recent studies have shown promising
results of supplementing vitamin D to pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Despite advances in medicine and health GDM is still prevalent among pregnant women, resulting
in possible complications to pregnancysuch as, fetal distress, preterm delivery, low birth weight,
as well as risk of type 2 diabetes to the mother (1). Research links vitamin D receptor (VDR),
which is also found in islet beta cells, to insulin secretion, thus possibly helping manage GDM (1).

Entrepreneurial Structure Of The Innovative...
Entrepreneurial Structure In contrast to the holistic entrepreneurial culture approach, other
companies form separate groups that work isolated from the rest of the organization to come up
with disruptive innovations. A common strategy to achieve this isolation is the skunk works model.
A small group is working full time on a project without being distracted by the company s
administrative overhead. They have a separate budget and only focus on their specific project
assignment. This provides the team freedom, autonomy, and independence to think outside of
current business constraints and come up with truly disruptive innovations (Fosfuri RГёnde, 2009).
Large companies with many and mature processes are ideal for this approach. IBM for example,
used this method to develop the PC (Roberts, 2004). Other companies as well, established formal
support centers to provide support and budget for dedicated teams that work as separate
organizational structure. Cargill for instance, created an Emerging Business Accelerator to fund all
promising projects that could be part of any existing department and potentially reach completely
new markets. Since managers are often only incentivized to meet short term targets, Cargill had to
adjust the targets for managers accordingly (Wolcott Lippitz, 2007). Isolated groups might be seen
as a potential threat by other departments as they might render their current function obsolete
(Fosfuri RГёnde, 2009). It is therefore important to establish

Analysis Of The Hurt Locker And Skyfall
The scenes I have chosen for the final project come from the films The Hurt Locker (Kathryn
Bigelow, 2008) and Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012). The reason I chose these scenes is because
they both symbolize the effects of alcohol. The scene from The Hurt Locker involves the
consumption of alcohol by the soldiers, which changes their behaviors and actions. They
transform from tough, serious characters, to compassionate, childish characters under the
influence of alcohol. In this context, alcohol holds the power over the characters in this scene.
Alcohol also plays a role of power in the clip I chose from Skyfall; it is the glass of alcohol in
this scene which influences Bond s decision. Alcohol, as well as other elements of cinematography
blend together to produce scenes where power is the main theme. The scene that I selected from
The Hurt Lockeris titled Stuff That Almost Killed Me. Here, we see three soldiers, who go by the
names of Will, J.T., and Owen, bonding after a long day at work. It is evident that they have all
consumed a good amount of alcohol; the bottle on the table they sit around gives us this clue, in
addition to the way the characters are speaking. Next, we see J.T. going through a box of items
that belong to Will. As he picks each item up from the box, J.T. asks why Will kept these war
items under his bed. Will describes the significance of each one, followed by saying that these are
all things that almost killed him. After they disagree about the significance of the items Will kept,
J.T. and Will get up and throw punches at each other, but just joking around. The scene ends with
J.T. laying on the floor in pain after being hit by Will. In Skyfall, Bond is presented the challenge
of shooting a shot glassoff of a woman s head. In the glass, of course, is alcohol, the element of
power. Raoul (the bad guy) leads Bond to the back of an abandoned building where a woman
named Severine is tied up. Bond is offered a shot of alcohol, followed by the rules of a little
game presented by Raoul. He tells Bond that the two of them are going to see who can shoot a
glass off of Severine s head first. As Bond is handed a gun, the man behind him puts a gun to Bond
s head, and the music that was once playing

Disney World And Homelessness
Reflections on Class Discussions Reflecting back on previous class discussions has brought my
focus on the effect that Disney World has contributed to the homelessness. The world is one
great big fantasy once you enter into the Magic Kingdom. Everyone is happy and there are
smiles, dancing and laughter in all directions. Perhaps we should look on the outside of the
Magic Kingdom where the world and the people are real; real just like you and me. The
discussions were quite interesting as we shared the misconceptions many had on how Disney
World would bring major changes to the economy. There would be jobs, jobs, jobs. However, to
our realization those hopes and dreams were quickly diminished and people were coming to
recognize that the stars they were seeing were just magical that quickly disappeared. What was
to be the happiest place on earth was slowing becoming a drawing card for the people hoping to
make a new start in their lives. A place where jobs would be available and their families could
have a better upgraded standard of living. But it seems that everyone in the class agreed that this
did not happen. We all agreed that many obstacles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Chesapeake Colonies
Beginning 1625, the first colonies in America was established in the Chesapeake, New England,
and Carolina region. More than 250,000 European settlers came over to the colonies, along with
300,000 West African slaves. The colonial societies would become the area for gold, god, and
glory. Some of the colonies flourished while some struggled to survive.
To begin, the Chesapeake region consisted of two colonies: Virginia and Maryland. In 1584, Sir
Walter Raleigh went on an exploratory voyage with several men to Roanoke Island. Landing was
only temporary because they needed decided the island was fertile to support a settlement. A
couple of years later, John White came over with 117 men, women, and children to settle in

Pilgrims were the first to arrive on the Mayflower. They were expected to land in Virginia, but
trailed off course, landing in Plymouth. They created the Mayflower Compact which states that all
who sign the document were to remain faithful to the king and behave like a good citizen. The
Pilgrims worked nicely with the Pequot Indians. They had the help of Squanto and Samoset, who
taught them how to farm and survive. The Puritans were the second group of individuals to arrive
in Massachusetts. John Winthrop, the first governor, wanted to create a tight knit community and a
model society for Christians. This was known as City Upon a Hill . They developed laws that was
connected with the church and the state. The Puritans valued education, so they built Harvard
University to train Puritan ministers. There was also religious tension with the Puritans. Kids of
religious parents didn t want a public conversion. The church wanted the kids to stay, so they
created the Half Way Covenant. It stated that the kids can continue becoming Puritans if they read
the Bible and had parents who went through a public conversion. Next, there was a crisis with
witchcraft, known as the Salem Witch Trials. The settlers were afraid of witches, connecting it with
the Devil. When the kids started behaving oddly, blame was casted towards women and

about 21 years to compose this symphony. Brahms was known as one of the greatest composers
of the nineteenth century. The symphony has four movements. The first movement began with a
slow introduction, supporting by the full orchestra; the drum was the loudest one. The middle
part of this movement s sound was like the sound of an action movie with people holding guns.
The musicians slowly ended the first movement and started the second one. Solo violins and
horns played together nicely; I felt the peace in it. The picture that I had in mind at that moment
was someone walking in the forest and waiting for his or her lover. The ending sounded like he
or she met the lover, and it was a happy ending. The third movement was played fast but
beautifully. Finally, the last movement was played from slow to fast and loud. The drum then
started to join the orchestra, and there was a horn solo part. The movement ended really fast and
loud like someone trying to run to the final point. The first and last movements are not as tension
as in the second and third ones. This symphony was kind of sad to me. After reading the program

The National Rifle Association Interest Group Paper The National Rifle Association is a very

Today it is arguably the most powerful lobbying organization in the nation s capital and certainly

Essay about Francisco de Goya s Painting, The Third of May
Francisco de Goya s Painting, The Third of May
Goya s painting has historical significance, as well as a social message that he wanted to send to
generations to come.
The painting The Third of May, by Francisco de Goya, was done in 1814 to commemorate the
events of that took place during the Napoleonic Warsin Madrid, Spain on May 2 and 3 1808. The
painting sets the scene of a man about to be killed by a firing squad. The bodies of those who have
already been killed are scattered around him, and those that wait to be killed stand in line behind
him. The ground is covered in blood from those who have already been executed. The sky in the

As a result of the revolt, eighty peasants were gathered together and executed during the pre dawn
hours of May third. Despite the overwhelming defeat of the revolt, the Spanish people were not
daunted. In the countryside, during the next six years, the first guerilla warfare was waged.
Eventually Napoleon and his troops were forced from Spain, but with them left their liberal reforms
(Tone 49). Goya had been pleased with the liberal reforms and other changes that Napoleon had
instituted in Spain, but was completely disgusted with what had happened during the war. He felt
that nothing lasting had been accomplished, while many had suffered and died as a result of the war.
Goya made a series of etchings and paintings depicting the atrocities of both sides involved with
the war. The most famous of these paintings are the two depicting the scenes from the second
and third of May. The work focuses on the victims of the situation, which in this case are the
Spanish citizens being executed. The work is not meant to be beautiful, but is instead supposed to
be horrible in order to shock the viewer. Goya s purpose within the painting is less to blame the
French, but instead to point out to people the faceless and mechanical forces of war itself, blindly
killing a representative of humanity (Stokstad). He used the incident as an example of how horrible
war is and what can happen when violence is instituted.

Nursing Extended Definition Of Nursing
Nursing Extended Definition The medical field has various career options such as surgeons,
licensed vocational nurses, primary care physicians, certified nursing aids, and more. Some
medical careers have their similarities along with their differences, as in a registered nurse
compared to a licensed vocational nurse or a primary care physician. The individuals who work
in the medical field operate several types of technology. Sometimes one can define a career field
by looking at what medical technology they use. The healthcare industry has long been
overburdened by a slow moving innovation due to the complexity of the medical ecosystem, but
due to this technology the industry has finally seen some changes (Honigman). The personal
responsibility related to being a registered nurse can be defined by looking at its difference to a
primary care physician, its comparison to a licensed vocational nurse, and technology
obtainable to them to help treat their patients with miscellaneous medical disorders. The
responsibility associated with being a registered nurse can be informal by looking at the
difference to a primary care physician. Nurses work in set shifts of eight hours for five days in a
week or twelve hours in four days in a week while doctors are on call twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week (Saavedra). Therefore, nurses have more manageable and tolerable hours than
doctors. Also, nurses have more time to get to know their patients on a personal level while

Proposal for Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean
Proposal for Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean: For human populations, particularly people in the
poorest countries across the globe, fish is an important source of nourishment and food. As a
result, fisheries catches represent a huge export of energy and mass that can no longer be
utilized by trophic levels that are higher than those fished. For a long period of time, several
human populations across the globe have continued to depend on fish as a significant source of
food and nourishment, which has contributed to widespread overfishing. The widespread
overfishing has in turn resulted in the decrease in the global catch of fish. Nonetheless, the links
between overfishing and food security have remained largely unclear and uncertain. According to
the findings of research, approximately 50 percent of commercial marine species have been
overfished in the past five decades (Srinivasan, Cheung, Watson Sumaila, p.1). The increase in
fisheries catches across the globe has also been fueled by the significant increase in the demand
for food because of the constant increase of human population. While the practice has remained a
major threat to every fish species in the ocean, it has largely contributed to the large migrations by
marine mammals as they seek to get the left over fish. Since the 1950s, there has been an
increasing trend in the number of unsustainable fisheries, which is an indication of the global
geographic expansion of overfishing (Coll et. al., p.1).

My Experience With The End Game
As I sat looking at the final, Dr. Van Tassell gave, I tried to decide what he was up to with this
assignment. What is the benefit, the end game? He always had something up his sleeve. So, I
thought: Is what we answer going to be our real final grade or is this for his own gain? Maybe
both? I still haven t figured it out. Therefore, I must press onward to the actual assignment. Here
it is: I believe I earned an A in INTS 2630; although, in the estimation of my class grades, I earned
a B. I believe I earned an A, because of my mastery and understanding of the course material. The
evidence can be found in the content of my course work and the ability to move forward in my

drowning in my daily to do list and unsure of what the bigger picture could be. I had assignments

Comparing Joy Luck Club And The Woman Warrior
Comparing The Joy Luck Club and The Woman Warrior
Amy Tan s immensely popular novel, The Joy Luck Club explores the issues faced by first and
second generation Chinese immigrants, particularly mothers and daughters. Although Tan s book is
a work of fiction, many of the struggles it describes are echoed in Maxine Hong Kingston s
autobiographical work, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. The pairs of
mothers and daughters in both of these books find themselves separated along both cultural and
generational lines. Among the barriers that must be overcome are those of language, beliefs and
customs, and geographic loyalty. The gulf between these women is sadly acknowledged by Ying

Communication becomes impossible (Huntley 46).
This anecdote sets the stage for conflict between the Chinese mothers and their American daughters.
The issue of the language barrier is a constant theme in both The Joy Luck Club and The Woman
Warrior. In the immigrant narrative, English plays a major role in assimilating into the new world.
For Tan, the struggle between Chinese and English haunts both her real life and her fiction. Tan
herself stopped speaking Chinese at age five, though she has never lost her first language entirely
(Amy). Her mother, Daisy, however, speaks in a combination [...] of English and Mandarin
(Huntley 3). Tan was taunted in grade school for her mother s heavy Shanghai accent (Huntley 3).
Because Daisy never became fluent in English, the linguistic friction merely escalated between the
two women (Amy). Tan expresses this tension in her novel when the fictional Jing mei admits that
she has trouble understanding her mother s meaning, and empathizes with her aunties who see
daughters who grow impatient when their mothers talk in Chinese, who think they are stupid when
they explain things in fractured English (Tan 40 1). The stresses of a bilingual relationship are
further explored when Lena St. Clair finds herself acting as translator between her Chinese mother
and English Irish father, who each refuse to learn the other s language, placing their daughter in the
cultural crossfire (Tan

To What Extent Does Dry Ice Sublimate In The Fastest
Background Research The topic of my experiment is which substance dry ice will sublimate in the
fastest. Dry ice changes its state from solid to gas when reacting to a substance, therefore a different
substance will have a different reaction time. The independent variable is the different substances
which are whole milk, water, vegetable oil, and Sprite. The dependent variable is the sublimation of
the dry ice in seconds. The constants are the amount of substance each container has, amount of dry
ice, the type of container they are put into. The control group is the container with the water in it.
According to the internet, there are no experiments identical to this one. There is one that is very
similar to mine which have two scientists trying to figure out the different effects with different
substances. They first went to the store to collect the materials needed for the experiment. When

Its Chemical formula is CO2. The liquid form of carbon dioxide has to be contained in a very high
pressured container and is fit difficult to acquire. Dry ice has a reaction to any substance once it
is taken out of its container that, that reaction is called sublimation. Sublimation is a chemical
process where a solid turns into a gas without going to a solid state. The most likely reason the
speed of sublimation will vary is because of the density and viscosity of the substance. Viscosity
is the property of resistance to flow in a fluid or semi fluid ( Merriam Webster.com ). Density is
how packed together something is. Given this information about dry ice and sublimation, the rate of
any substance can vary in many ways. Therefore, if dry ice is placed in the thinnest liquid with the
least density then it will have the fastest sublimation right because the reaction will happen sooner
than a liquid with a higher density and a thinker

Essay on Teaching No, but Saying Yes
Teaching No, but Saying Yes America has the highest number of teen pregnancies with 750,000
teenage girls becoming pregnant each year and HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, a leading
cause of death in young people, infects America s youth everyday (Sun). The lives of ordinary
young men and women are abruptly interrupted when they learn they will soon be parents or must
now live with an incurable disease. With this information in mind, American public schools need to
be teaching middle school and high schools students the importance of safe sex. Many programs
focus on the idea of abstinence, refraining from sexual activity until marriage, but these programs
seem to have little to no effect on our youth. By age 19, most college students... Show more content

Schoolchildren do not know that by having oral sex, you can still contract STDs. How can
parents and teachers expect them to know when the health teachers just explain abstinence is
the key? Is talking about sex a bad thing? In society today it seems that people are afraid to speak
about teenage sexual behavior because it is something teens are expected not to do. As if just
telling teens to not have sex will just solve it all. But teenagers rarely do as they are told. Some
researches would make you believe handing out condoms and enlightening teens on sex in like
giving a pass to be promiscuous, but in all honesty this is not the message advocates and
educators are sending. Telling teens about what happens, the emotional aftermath, and the risks
involved with sex will cause them to think about it more and be more open to talking to their
parents or guardians. Many of America s young people are afraid to speak to their parents about
sex because they feel embarrassed or feel like their parents will lock them away to be sure they
abstain from sex, but talking about sex with people who have been through what teens are going
through will help. New reality television shows are depicting life as a teenage mom or what it is
like to live with HIV/AIDS. A show called, Teen Mom, a spin off of its original, 16 and Pregnant,
follows the lives of teenage mothers trying to raise their babies while still attending school, dating,

  • 3. The Epidemic Of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever Introduction Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe and often deadly illness named after a river in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly ZaГЇre) where it was п¬Ѓrst identiп¬Ѓed in 1976 with a high case fatality rate lying between 50 and 90%. Outbreaks between 1972 and 2007 are shown in Table 1. The disease п¬Ѓrst came into the limelight in 1976 in ZaГЇre and Sudan in 1976 [17]. Its origin is still unknown and it is widely believed that Ebola virus is transmitted to humans from discrete life cycles in animals or insects, but regardless of the original source. Person to person transmission is the means by which Ebola outbreaks and epidemics progress. Bioterrorism threats as well as emergence of new pandemic and drug resistant variants of known infections require development of the tools that would adequately predict occurrence of epidemics, assess efficiency of countermeasures, and optimize the efforts directed towards provision of biological safety. Mathematical modeling has emerged as an important tool for gaining understanding of the dynamics of the spread of infectious diseases. The need of accurate models describing the epidemic process are vital, because infectious diseases outbreaks disturb the host population and has п¬Ѓnancial and health consequences. There is also the need to use sound statistical analysis methods to test the п¬Ѓt of such models to observed data to account for uncertainties by means of probabilistic models. Gulf War Air Defense Essay The Role of Air Defense in the Gulf War Throughout the history of Air Defense Artillery (ADA), innovative steps were made for the technological advance in weaponry to defend our skies and ground forces. The diverse history and continuous research and development of air defense systems played a vital role in the safety of ground troops and foreign civilians during the Persian Gulf crisis. Though not always in the forefront of battle, ADA had its own vital roles that it played from the time of its birth, and it was no different during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield when necessity helped to bring about the evolution of the PAC II Patriot missile. • 7. Beach Boys Caroline For this week s listening journal, I listened to Caroline No by The Beach Boys. There are many characteristics of this piece that stood out to me, such as the relationship between the lyrics and the musical quality and the musical elements that set the tone of the music. At the exposition of Caroline No there is an eerie drum and cymbal introduction that has a sort of call and response relationship. The cymbals would play a short melody and the drum beat would follow, this exchange occurred a couple of times. This exchange between the cymbals and the drums made the piece seem melancholic and mysterious and sets the mood for the rest of the song. The quality of the voice was interesting because it was unlike most songs of The Beach Boys I have heard of before. Throughout the song, The Beach Boys have a slow and relaxing tempo that does not shift as the piece progresses. For the most part, the tempo remains steady and slow. This is also present in the second verse between the words away and say. Furthermore, the last word of each line is sung with melisma. The name mineralocorticoid derives from early observations that these hormones were involved in the retention of sodium, a mineral. The primary endogenous mineralocorticoid is aldosterone, although a number of other endogenous hormones (including progesterone and deoxycorticosterone) have mineralocorticoid function.

Aldosterone acts on the kidneys to provide active reabsorption of sodium and an associated passive reabsorption of water, as well as the active secretion of potassium in the principal cells of the cortical collecting tubule and active secretion of protons via proton ATPases in the lumenal membrane of the intercalated cells of the collecting tubule. This in turn results in an increase of blood pressure and blood volume.

 Glucocortiocoids=
Glucocorticoids (GC) are a class of steroid hormones that bind to the glucocorticoid receptor, which is present in almost every vertebrate animal cell.

GCs are part of the feedback mechanism in the immune system that turns immune activity (inflammation) down. They are therefore used in medicine to treat diseases that are caused by an overactive immune system, such as allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases and sepsis. GCs have ... In addition to speeches King wrote several letters including, Letter from Birmingham Jail, in which discussed the great injustices that were occurring towards the African American community in Birmingham. To justify his aspirations for racial justice and equality, Martin Luther King Junior uses the emotional, ethical and logical appeals. In this paper, I will be discussing the cause and effect of the significant excerpt, supporting my claims with textual evidence and will be providing commentary about the intended effect. First of all, the very first line of King s letter was appealing and grabbed the attention of the audience. Purpose The purpose of this experiment was to determine how different types of milk and cream, with different percentages of fat, affect the height of the resulting ice cream. Background Information Fats are lipids, which are organic compounds composed of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. Most fat molecules consist of three fatty acid tails and a glycerol. Fatty acid tails are made of hydrogen and carbon, the way that they are arranged determines the type of fat. There are two broad categories of fats saturated and unsaturated. When the ingredients are mixed together, the fat particles are disturbed and broken apart. Air is distributed into the mixture and held in place between the fat molecules to create a smooth texture ( The Science of Ice Cream , PhysicsBuzz). At first, these products are close to room temperature, conversely, the end product is a frozen dessert. To do this, the mixture must be cooled past its freezing point. The ice is what ultimately freezes the cream. However, since the mixture is not just pure water, which freezes at 0В° Celsius, the freezing point must be cooler. Freezing point depression is a colligative property where more solute is added to the solvent. In this case, salt is the solute and the ice/water is the solvent. If the concentration of the solution is increased, consequently, the freezing point will decrease to be lower than that of the usual. The new change will then allow the ice to absorb the heat and melt, while transferring the coldness to the ice cream. When the ice constantly comes in contact with the salt crystals, by stirring, churning, or other methods, it becomes cooler because of the interaction between them. By lowering the temperature of the ice and salt mixture, the ice cream is able to harden and take shape because it still freezes at 0В° Celsius and it is being cooled down to reach that ... There are some reactive by products of cellular respiration, derived from molecular oxygen, that are generated continuously in cells grown aerobically, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) superoxide anion radical (O2 ), and the highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH).These reactive oxygenspecies (ROS) are essential for various functions such as homeostasis and cell signaling but an imbalance in favor of reactive oxygen species results in oxidative stress (OS) (Kashmiri et al.,2014). Oxidative stress (OS) result in interference in the functioning of biological systems that maintain levels of environmentally produced reactive oxygen species (ROS), by readily detecting and detoxifying them (Lucana et al., 2012). Living organisms have adopted mechanisms to protect themselves against oxidative stress, by producing enzymes such as catalase and superoxide dismutase, small proteins like thioredoxin and glutaredoxin, and molecules such as glutathione ( Cabiscol et al.,1999). Metallo enzymes such as superoxide dismutases are the primary antioxidant enzymes that protect cells from oxidative damage of superoxide radicals, by catalyzing dismutation of superoxide (O2 ) to hydrogen peroxideand oxygen. This company had a policy saying that women did not have to work at night because the company was located in a high crime area. The male employees had to work the night shifts for the company, while the women employees did not. The male employee in question filed a suit under Title VII against his employer claiming sexual discrimination. The company claimed that several female employees would quit if they were forced to work at night. The company also claimed the policy was a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ). This case is interesting because BFOQ can be used as a defense to allow certain discrimination. BFOQ is an exception provided by Title VII for jobs that require a specific religion, sex, national origin, or age as a reasonable necessity for normal operations of a business. • 24. Entrepreneurial Structure Of The Innovative... Entrepreneurial Structure In contrast to the holistic entrepreneurial culture approach, other companies form separate groups that work isolated from the rest of the organization to come up with disruptive innovations. A common strategy to achieve this isolation is the skunk works model. A small group is working full time on a project without being distracted by the company s administrative overhead. They have a separate budget and only focus on their specific project assignment. This provides the team freedom, autonomy, and independence to think outside of current business constraints and come up with truly disruptive innovations (Fosfuri RГёnde, 2009). Large companies with many and mature processes are ideal for this approach. IBM for example, used this method to develop the PC (Roberts, 2004). Other companies as well, established formal support centers to provide support and budget for dedicated teams that work as separate organizational structure. Cargill for instance, created an Emerging Business Accelerator to fund all promising projects that could be part of any existing department and potentially reach completely new markets. Since managers are often only incentivized to meet short term targets, Cargill had to adjust the targets for managers accordingly (Wolcott Lippitz, 2007). Isolated groups might be seen as a potential threat by other departments as they might render their current function obsolete (Fosfuri RГёnde, 2009). It is therefore important to establish ... • 25. Analysis Of The Hurt Locker And Skyfall The scenes I have chosen for the final project come from the films The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, 2008) and Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012). The reason I chose these scenes is because they both symbolize the effects of alcohol. The scene from The Hurt Locker involves the consumption of alcohol by the soldiers, which changes their behaviors and actions. They transform from tough, serious characters, to compassionate, childish characters under the influence of alcohol. In this context, alcohol holds the power over the characters in this scene. Alcohol also plays a role of power in the clip I chose from Skyfall; it is the glass of alcohol in this scene which influences Bond s decision. Alcohol, as well as other elements of cinematography blend together to produce scenes where power is the main theme. The scene that I selected from The Hurt Lockeris titled Stuff That Almost Killed Me. Here, we see three soldiers, who go by the names of Will, J.T., and Owen, bonding after a long day at work. It is evident that they have all consumed a good amount of alcohol; the bottle on the table they sit around gives us this clue, in addition to the way the characters are speaking. Next, we see J.T. going through a box of items that belong to Will. As he picks each item up from the box, J.T. asks why Will kept these war items under his bed. Will describes the significance of each one, followed by saying that these are all things that almost killed him. After they disagree about the significance of the items Will kept, J.T. and Will get up and throw punches at each other, but just joking around. The scene ends with J.T. laying on the floor in pain after being hit by Will. In Skyfall, Bond is presented the challenge of shooting a shot glassoff of a woman s head. In the glass, of course, is alcohol, the element of power. Raoul (the bad guy) leads Bond to the back of an abandoned building where a woman named Severine is tied up. Bond is offered a shot of alcohol, followed by the rules of a little game presented by Raoul. He tells Bond that the two of them are going to see who can shoot a glass off of Severine s head first. National Rifle Association Interest Group Papers The National Rifle Association Interest Group Paper The National Rifle Association is a very historic and well known organization which was founded in 1871. The NRA is widely known for protecting the second amendment of the constitution which is what gives people the right to keep and bear arms and very strong promoters of proper gun use. Sarah Horwitz, state s that, Today it is arguably the most powerful lobbying organization in the nation s capital and certainly the most feared. (Achenbach, Joel, Scott Higham, and Sari Horwitz) What makes the National Rifle Association so strong of an interest group is how they do not shy away from controversy on gun control which is also why their number of group members is so large and continues to grow year after year. The National Rifle Association has a long, active history which have made it the powerful nonprofit interest group that still gets a lot of attention to this day. Founded in 1871 by retired Army and National Guard officers whose main goal was to promote the proper use of rifles and improve marksmanship. The idea of this interest group all started when the group s first president, Ambrose Burnside who was a Civil War general witnessed firsthand his own soldiers lacking the ability to shoot straight, so from then on the NRA focused on hunting, shooting and conservation, and no one thought of it as a gun lobby. Essay about Francisco de Goya s Painting, The Third of May Francisco de Goya s Painting, The Third of May Goya s painting has historical significance, as well as a social message that he wanted to send to generations to come. The painting The Third of May, by Francisco de Goya, was done in 1814 to commemorate the events of that took place during the Napoleonic Warsin Madrid, Spain on May 2 and 3 1808. The painting sets the scene of a man about to be killed by a firing squad. Despite the overwhelming defeat of the revolt, the Spanish people were not daunted. In the countryside, during the next six years, the first guerilla warfare was waged. Eventually Napoleon and his troops were forced from Spain, but with them left their liberal reforms (Tone 49). Goya had been pleased with the liberal reforms and other changes that Napoleon had instituted in Spain, but was completely disgusted with what had happened during the war. He felt that nothing lasting had been accomplished, while many had suffered and died as a result of the war. Goya made a series of etchings and paintings depicting the atrocities of both sides involved with the war. The most famous of these paintings are the two depicting the scenes from the second and third of May. The work focuses on the victims of the situation, which in this case are the Spanish citizens being executed. The work is not meant to be beautiful, but is instead supposed to be horrible in order to shock the viewer. Goya s purpose within the painting is less to blame the French, but instead to point out to people the faceless and mechanical forces of war itself, blindly killing a representative of humanity (Stokstad). He used the incident as an example of how horrible war is and what can happen when violence is instituted. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Nursing Extended Definition Of Nursing Nursing Extended Definition The medical field has various career options such as surgeons, licensed vocational nurses, primary care physicians, certified nursing aids, and more. Some medical careers have their similarities along with their differences, as in a registered nurse compared to a licensed vocational nurse or a primary care physician. The individuals who work in the medical field operate several types of technology. Sometimes one can define a career field by looking at what medical technology they use. The healthcare industry has long been overburdened by a slow moving innovation due to the complexity of the medical ecosystem, but due to this technology the industry has finally seen some changes (Honigman). The personal responsibility related to being a registered nurse can be defined by looking at its difference to a primary care physician, its comparison to a licensed vocational nurse, and technology obtainable to them to help treat their patients with miscellaneous medical disorders. The responsibility associated with being a registered nurse can be informal by looking at the difference to a primary care physician. Nurses work in set shifts of eight hours for five days in a week or twelve hours in four days in a week while doctors are on call twenty four hours a day, seven days a week (Saavedra). Therefore, nurses have more manageable and tolerable hours than doctors. Also, nurses have more time to get to know their patients on a personal level while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Proposal for Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean Proposal for Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean: For human populations, particularly people in the poorest countries across the globe, fish is an important source of nourishment and food. As a result, fisheries catches represent a huge export of energy and mass that can no longer be utilized by trophic levels that are higher than those fished. For a long period of time, several human populations across the globe have continued to depend on fish as a significant source of food and nourishment, which has contributed to widespread overfishing. The widespread overfishing has in turn resulted in the decrease in the global catch of fish. Nonetheless, the links between overfishing and food security have remained largely unclear and uncertain. According to the findings of research, approximately 50 percent of commercial marine species have been overfished in the past five decades (Srinivasan, Cheung, Watson Sumaila, p.1). The increase in fisheries catches across the globe has also been fueled by the significant increase in the demand for food because of the constant increase of human population. While the practice has remained a major threat to every fish species in the ocean, it has largely contributed to the large migrations by marine mammals as they seek to get the left over fish. Since the 1950s, there has been an increasing trend in the number of unsustainable fisheries, which is an indication of the global geographic expansion of overfishing (Coll et. al., p.1). ... Therefore, I must press onward to the actual assignment. Here it is: I believe I earned an A in INTS 2630; although, in the estimation of my class grades, I earned a B. I believe I earned an A, because of my mastery and understanding of the course material. The evidence can be found in the content of my course work and the ability to move forward in my major with the concepts and ideas attained in the class. Throughout the semester, I found myself drowning in my daily to do list and unsure of what the bigger picture could be. I had assignments in each one of classes every single day we met, alongside a full time job, pledging a sorority (another full time job) and an almost twice daily commute. All of the work forced me to utilize every second I could spare. I did school work at work and, really, wherever else possible. Honestly, some days, the class work had been finished on time and other days, it had not. In INTS 2630, the updated copies of my essays did not always make it on the commute with me. Although Tan s book is a work of fiction, many of the struggles it describes are echoed in Maxine Hong Kingston s autobiographical work, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. The pairs of mothers and daughters in both of these books find themselves separated along both cultural and generational lines. This anecdote sets the stage for conflict between the Chinese mothers and their American daughters. The issue of the language barrier is a constant theme in both The Joy Luck Club and The Woman Warrior. In the immigrant narrative, English plays a major role in assimilating into the new world. For Tan, the struggle between Chinese and English haunts both her real life and her fiction. Tan herself stopped speaking Chinese at age five, though she has never lost her first language entirely (Amy). Her mother, Daisy, however, speaks in a combination [...] of English and Mandarin (Huntley 3). Tan was taunted in grade school for her mother s heavy Shanghai accent (Huntley 3). Because Daisy never became fluent in English, the linguistic friction merely escalated between the two women (Amy). Tan expresses this tension in her novel when the fictional Jing mei admits that she has trouble understanding her mother s meaning, and empathizes with her aunties who see daughters who grow impatient when their mothers talk in Chinese, who think they are stupid when they explain things in fractured English (Tan 40 1). The stresses of a bilingual relationship are further explored when Lena St. Clair finds herself acting as translator between her Chinese mother and English Irish father, who each refuse to learn the other s language, placing their daughter in the cultural crossfire (Tan ... Dry ice changes its state from solid to gas when reacting to a substance, therefore a different substance will have a different reaction time. The independent variable is the different substances which are whole milk, water, vegetable oil, and Sprite. The dependent variable is the sublimation of the dry ice in seconds. The constants are the amount of substance each container has, amount of dry ice, the type of container they are put into. The control group is the container with the water in it. According to the internet, there are no experiments identical to this one. Dry ice has a reaction to any substance once it is taken out of its container that, that reaction is called sublimation. Sublimation is a chemical process where a solid turns into a gas without going to a solid state. The most likely reason the speed of sublimation will vary is because of the density and viscosity of the substance. Viscosity is the property of resistance to flow in a fluid or semi fluid ( Merriam Webster.com ). Density is how packed together something is. Given this information about dry ice and sublimation, the rate of any substance can vary in many ways. Therefore, if dry ice is placed in the thinnest liquid with the least density then it will have the fastest sublimation right because the reaction will happen sooner than a liquid with a higher density and a thinker ...
