Today’s world contains such a wide range of cultures all living and working together,
side by side. Within any classroom, you will find a melting pot of beliefs, cultures, and races, all
going about their day and living their lives, as one, in school, often not realizing how different
each of their lives are on a day to day basis than their neighbors. Embracing each culture and
allowing the children in the classroom to share where they come from in unique ways allows
every one of their peers, as well as their teacher(s), to understand and gain a strong grip on the
unique individual they are, while at the same time giving that student the time to shine and to be
proud of their culture.
The Common Core standard covered for the following lesson is CCSS.ELA-
Literacy.RH.6-8.7: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or
maps) with other information in print and digital texts, which can be found at
http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RH/6-8/7/. The learning activity chosen for 6th
grade students is a short essay and poster board project that each student will create about their
ancestors, culture, and where they/their family came from. The students will be able to be as
creative as possible, using magazine cut-outs, photographs, and other materials that represent
their culture/heritage to share with the class, in order for the entire class to gain a well-rounded
vision of what their home is like, how they celebrate holidays or traditions in their families, and
other unique factors that contribute to their individuality. The students’ essays will not only
discuss their personal lives currently, but will incorporate their ancestor’s lives and traditions as
well, as the children will have to do some research dating a hundred or so years back, to gain that
understanding of how they got where they are today.

1. What are Caine's funds of knowledge?
Culture builds creativity. Funds of knowledge refer to fundamental cultural practices and bodies of knowledge which are rooted in the day to day activities and routines of families (Hogg, 2011). Caine loves arcades and would not pass one without shopping. He loves tickets, playing games, and prizes. He spent his summer vacation building the cardboard arcade, perfecting his game design, making toy cars, and designing security systems for his Fun Pass. His funds of knowledge were influenced by his surrounding as his father had an auto spare shop which rovided necessary resources for Caine to build his arcade.
2. If Caine were your student, in what ways would you be able to capitalize on Cain's Fok?
Capitalizing on a student’s fok enhances learning and the learner’s engagement to make a student perform excellently in his academics. To capitalize on Caine’s funds of knowledge, I would carry out a visit to his home to learn about the day to day activities that influence his thinking. Also, I would interact with his community to learn about their culture and use the knowledge to assist Caine to perform better in class. In class, I will create a creativity session whereby Caine and other students can freely express their funds of knowledge. I will give Caine the necessary resources needed to make his fok successful and use illustrations that he best understands to enhance his learning.
3. How would you incorporate Cain's fok into your teaching?
To incorporate Caine’s fok into teaching, I would research about his community so as to understand his funds of knowledge. This way, I will gather necessary information to assist him exploit his capabilities. I will then draft a course outline that will create an opportunity for Caine to fully use his funds of knowledge. I would provide him with the necessary resources and assist him where necessary.
4. How would you identify the utilize one of your student's funds of knowledge?
A student’s line of thought is shaped by the environment that surrounds him. I would identify the use of a student’s funds of knowledge in his creativity, for example in creative writing or artwork. This is because in creative writing, the student will write something that he has experienced or has been made to believe. In art, the student will come up with artworks that depict his funds of knowledge.

I feel like a visitor in my own
school—that hasn’t changed,”
Samantha said, confusion and
despair in her voice. We were
at the tail end of a focus group
discussion with African American
students at Green Hills High, a pre-
dominantly white, economically
diverse school. We had been invited to
conduct an equity assessment, exam-
ining the extent to which Green Hills
was an equitable learning environment
for all. We had asked Samantha and
a small group of her classmates how
they would characterize their school’s
two-year-old Multicultural Curriculum
Initiative, touted by school adminis-
trators as a comprehensive effort to
infuse a multicultural perspective into
all aspects of school life.
“I’m invisible,” Sean added, “but
also hypervisible. Maybe twice a year
there’s a program about somebody’s
food or music, but that’s about it. I
don’t see the purpose.”
Then Cynthia, who had remained
quiet through most of the hourlong
discussion, slammed her fist on the
table, exclaiming, “That multicultural
initiative means nothing. There’s
racism at this school, and nobody’s
doing anything about it!”
We found ourselves only a few
moments later in our next scheduled
focus group, surrounded by the
school’s power brokers: the prin-
cipal, assistant principals, deans, and
department chairs. Still taken—maybe
even a little shaken—by what we had
heard from the young women and
men who felt fairly powerless at Green
Hills, we asked the administrators
about the purpose of the Multicultural
Curriculum Initiative.
After a brief silence, Jonathan, the
principal, leaned back in his chair.
We had observed him over the past
few days interacting with students,
and it was clear he cared deeply about
them. The Multicultural Curriculum
Initiative was his brainchild, his baby.
Jonathan decorated his office door
with quotes about diversity and his
office walls with artwork depicting
diverse groups of youth. “We see
diversity as our greatest asset. That’s
what this initiative is all about. What
we aim to do here,” he explained with
measured intensity, “is to celebrate
the joys of diversity.” When we shared
with Jonathan the concerns raised
by the African American students,
he appeared confused and genuinely
concerned. “They said that?” he asked,
before interrupting a member of his
leadership team who had begun to
defend the initiative. “Maybe it’s time
to rethink this.”

Understanding the
Motivational Contingencies
of Team Leadership

Abstract
Despite increased research on team leadership, little is known about the
conditions under which coaching versus directive forms of team leader-
ship are more effective, or the processes through which team leadership
styles influence team outcomes. In the present study, the authors found that
coaching leadership was more effective than directive leadership when the
team leader was highly charismatic and less effective than directive leader-
ship when the team leader lacked charisma. Directive leadership was more
effective than coaching leadership when team members were high in
self-efficacy and less effective than coaching leadership when team members
lacked self-efficacy. The moderating effects of leader charisma and team
member self-efficacy were mediated through motivational pathways involving
team member effort.

A growing body of research highlights how important leader behaviors are
for team performance (DeRue, Nahrgang, Wellman, & Humphrey, in press;

Druskat & Wheeler, 2003; Durham, Knight, & Locke, 1997). In fact, Zaccaro,
Rittman, and Marks (2001) suggest that effective leadership is one of the
more important factors in the success of organizational teams. Yet at the same
time, we still have a limited understanding of how leaders create and manage
effective teams (Burke et al., 2006; Kozlowski, Gully, Salas, & Cannon-
Bowers, 1996; Zaccaro et al., 2001).
Research indicates that team leaders engage in a variety of behaviors
aimed at facilitating team functioning and performance (Morgeson, DeRue,
& Karam, 2010). One approach involves encouraging the team to manage its
own affairs and developing the team’s capacity to function effectively with-
out direct intervention from the team leader. First identified by Manz and
Sims (1987), and later analyzed by many other scholars (e.g., Hackman &
Wageman, 2005; Morgeson, 2005; Wageman, 2001), this form of leadership
focuses on coaching the team and empowering its self-management. This
coaching form of leadership is particularly important given that team leaders
are sometimes external to a team and not involved in its daily task activities.

I am highly satisfied with the lesson plan, particularly because it yielded the desired results proving that it was carefully crafted right from the beginning. My goal at the end of the lesson was to offer a good learning experience to the learners, and I achieved that. I was able to put into perspective all the factors which played a huge role in influencing the learning outcomes of the learners in the small group. I executed the lesson plan effectively. I engaged the learners and strengthened their understanding of the course content. By sharing the lesson plan with the learners through highlighting a visible agenda on the board about what they will be learning and doing during class time, I was able to keep them on track. I made a conscious effort to maintain eye contact in class, and this enhanced the involvement of the learners with the course content. I conveyed the content and instructions in a clear and specific manner so that the learners with poor listening comprehension were not left behind.
When attempting to put a point across in class, I ensured that my voice was loud enough and clear. This, coupled with the developed rules and regulations, enabled me to successfully maintain a degree of order and control in the class, and fully grasped the attention of the learners. Using relevant examples and analogies to demonstrate the mathematical concepts was successful as the learners were able to understand the topic more. I also succeeded in building a rapport with the learners thanks to the warm and friendly class atmosphere that I created. Additionally, I was successful in time management. I did not run out of time as all that I had planned to cover was completed within the stipulated timeline. Using a collaborative approach for teaching also succeeded in boosting involvement among all the learners. In regard to the improvements, apart from winding up the lesson by simply summarizing the main points learned, it would be a good idea to conclude by also previewing the next lesson. This means briefly striking a connection between the finished concept and the next coming concept. A combination of summarizing and previewing would spur the interest of the learners in the coming lesson and enable them to connect the various ideas within a much larger context.
The other improvement would have been establishing strategies to obtain learners’ feedback in order to gather insight into any shortcomings in my teaching technique. Participation Guidelines
Each weekly group discussion is worth a maximum of 50 points. Students must post a minimum of four times in each discussion. One of these posts must be a summary of learning for the week. The initial response to the discussion prompt must be posted by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT, of each week. Each of the subsequent posts must occur on days following the initial response. The final posting deadline for all subsequent posts is by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week. For week 8 only, subsequent posts must occur by the Saturday deadline-11:59 pm MT. When it comes to individuals with exceptionalities and diverse needs, some individuals warmly embrace these individuals and welcome them into their classrooms while others do not for a myriad of reasons. In this module you are studying about learner differences and individuals with exceptionalities. When Germany was under the Nazi regime the phrase "life unworthy of life" (in German: "Lebensunwertes Leben") was used since some felt that some individuals had no right to live. There were times throughout history that people felt that individuals with disabilities or diverse needs should be treated differently. When you examine the realities of history, the power of language, and the ethical or unethical behaviors surrounding caring for and educating individuals with differences, it provides a deeper understanding as to why laws have been created throughout the years to promote ethical practices and to cultivate effective learning opportunities for all individuals. It is essential for educators and future leaders to have an understanding of history, critically analyze it through a biblical lens, and determine how to approach, nurture, and educate these individuals with diverse and special needs.
