was an equitable learning environment

two-year-old Multicultural Curriculum
Initiative, touted by school adminis-
trators as a comprehensive effort to
infuse a multicultural perspective into
all aspects of school life.
“I’m invisible,” Sean added, “but
also hypervisible. Maybe twice a year
there’s a program about somebody’s
food or music, but that’s about it. I
don’t see the purpose.”
Then Cynthia, who had remained
quiet through most of the hourlong
discussion, slammed her fist on the

racism at this school, and nobody’s
doing anything about it!”

Eddie is a White preschooler with a genuine curiosity about everything. He was the first to ask how plants grow and how cars run. One day he asked Michael, an African American classmate, whether his skin was brown because he had drunk too much chocolate milk. Eddie was honestly attempting to make sense of what he observed: he noticed the pattern between the African American child bringing chocolate milk for lunch and having darker skin than the rest of the children in the class.
In situations like this, teachers have to think about how to guide such conversations between children. We do not want to stifle children's natural cognitive development process, and we do not want to make them feel ashamed about being curious and asking questions. The goal is to be able to provide children with accurate, yet developmentally appropriate, information about why they might be observing certain physical differences between children.
The purpose of this chapter is to build the cultural competence of early education teachers so they will be able to effectively teach young children with ethnic, language, and cultural differences, as well as examine the biases in their own teaching and perceptions. This chapter also explores how prejudice and bias may develop inside and outside the classroom, such as through the media, and ways to combat these prejudices and biases by building a more culturally inclusive classroom that affirms the principles of multicultural education.

Humans share the vast majority of their cognitive skills with other great apes. In addition, however, humans have also evolved a
unique suite of cognitive skills and motivations—collectively referred to as shared intentionality—for living collaboratively,
learning socially, and exchanging information in cultural groups.

Surely one of the deepest and most important questions in all of
the psychological sciences is how human cognition is similar to
and different from that of other primates. The main datum is this:
Humans seemingly engage in all kinds of cognitive activities that
their nearest primate relatives do not, but at the same time there is
great variability among different cultural groups. All groups have
complex technologies but of very different types; all groups use
linguistic and other symbols but in quite different ways; all
groups have complex social institutions but very different ones.
What this suggests is that human cognition is in some way bound
up with human culture. Here we argue that this is indeed the case,
and we then try to explain this fact evolutionarily.
Similarities in Ape and Human Cognition
The five great ape species (orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees,
bonobos, humans) share a common ancestor from about 15 mil-
lion years ago, with the last three sharing a common ancestor
from about 6 million years ago (see Fig. 1 for a picture of chim-
panzees). Since great apes are so closely related to one another
evolutionarily, it is natural that they share many perceptual,
behavioral, and cognitive skills.
Great ape cognitive worlds
Many different studies suggest that nonhuman great apes (here-
after great apes) understand the physical world in basically the
same way as humans. Like humans, apes live most basically in
a world of permanent objects (and categories and quantities of
objects) existing in a mentally represented space. Moreover,
they understand much about various kinds of events in the
world and how these events relate to one another causally (see
Tomasello & Call, 1997, for a review). Apes’ and other
primates’ cognitive skills for dealing with the physical world
almost certainly evolved in the context of foraging for food.
As compared with other mammals, primates may face special
challenges in locating their daily fare, since ripe fruits are pat-
chy resources that are irregularly distributed in space and time.
Other studies suggest that great apes understand their social
worlds in basically the same way as humans as well. Like
humans, apes live in a world of identifiable individuals with
whom they form various kinds of social relationships—for
example, in terms of dominance and ‘‘friendship’’—and they
recognize the third-party social relationships that.

Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to academics and the professional world. Thanks to my experience as a financial ops generalist, I have gained great communication skills. I am responsible for contacting vendors to address or fix any issues we may have with the service or product. I have also completed training on effective communication at my current job. This training was helpful being that I have to regularly speak with offenders family members as well. Another one of my strengths is that I am very reliable. My previous supervisor would always assign me extra duties when she had a deadline to meet because she knew that I would make sure it was done by the deadline. An academic weakness that I have is writing papers, I tend to procrastinate when it comes to having to write them. I have found that the writing center is very helpful. The university's library is helpful when having to do research. I have used the citation generator numerous times in the past to help with citations. If you have trouble with citations, this is a good resource or tool to use.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.

Capitalizing on a student’s fok enhances learning and the
learner’s engagement to make a student perform excellently in
his academics. To capitalize on Caine’s funds of knowledge, I
would carry out a visit to his home to learn about the day to day
activities that influence his thinking. Also, I would interact with
his community to learn about their culture and use the
knowledge to assist Caine to perform better in class. In class, I
will create a creativity session whereby Caine and other

and use illustrations that he best understands to enhance his

Lesson: Beauty is Skin Deep
Name-calling is a common practice in education institutions and
students may refer to each other based on physical appearance
especially skin color, for example, calling an African ‘Blacky.'
Name-calling can develop into physical abuse and other
discrimination, and is harmful to the victim and can even lead
to suicide due to the feeling of not being good enough as the
others. To integrate this idea into my classroom, I will first
gather the necessary materials such as media images that will be
used to identify an attractive person and one who is not. I will
then formulate a question that will provoke the students to say
the common names they use to refer to others who are
physically different from them, and how they arrived at such
names. Next, I will make the students understand that everyone
is attractive despite their physical appearance and the
importance of appreciating diversities among them. I will then
give them an essay to write about the attractiveness of a person
who is physically different.
I was drawn to this particular lesson because I am an
international student of Asian origin. I have had difficulties
socializing with other students who have misconceptions about
my culture. I believe that beauty is skin deep and not
accommodating others who differ in appearance prevents us
from learning and delighting in the inner beauty of that person.

BLOG 1
The article focuses on the significance of public schools in the
society. The article argues that public schools were established
to serve the educational needs of the citizens and not to satisfy
individual interests. However, it emerges that the parents and
students are not asked what they want to gain in a given school.
The article points out that to ensure that the public interests are
served by the public schools, the federal, local and state
politicians, community organizations and other interest groups
determine the educational goals and the methods and content of
instruction. Such content includes the political, social and
economic aspects that define the national and global
operations.
The political component taught in public schools includes the
historical aspects, patriotism and including religious studies. It
is critical for students to learn about the history of their state or
country that include the governing figures and parties.
Patriotism is a fundamental part that influences politics; hence,
students need to develop an in-depth understanding of what it
entails as well as the approach to fulfilling it. The main focus
has been to mold students who can understand the dynamics
surrounding politics and religious beliefs. On the social
account, schooling is a gate to reducing crimes and harmful
behaviors that could affect the economic development of the
country. The article demonstrates that the economic aspect of
schooling is creating a skilled worker force in the U.S
economy.
The article illustrates the gradual growth and transformation in
the schooling system in the U.S for centuries. The goals of
5. schooling have changed over the years considering that new
methods of instruction are being applied. More emphasis has
been given to public schooling as opposed to homeschooling.
BLOG 2
Culture is a broad term that means different things to different
individuals in different perspectives. In some occasions, it is
related to only the individuals with formal education and
fortunate social status as said by Kleinman, A. (2011).
Currently, it is generally acknowledged that culture is more
than what a privileged group of individuals may do in their
spare time; however, there still exists diverse and inconsistent
notions of its meaning in everyday life. Several attributes have
however been provided to understand culture, which define
culture in the following aspects:
Culture is dynamic. It does not exist outside of human beings,
meaning that cultures are not fixed relics, sluggish behaviors or
sterile principles. Culture is multifaceted. Closely linked to the
dynamic character of culture is that cultural identifications are
compound, diverse, varied and heterogeneous. This implies that
for one thing, it is not possible to conflate it with just customs
or race. Culture is fixed in Context. This means that culture is
consistently influenced by the surroundings in which it exists.
Culture Is Influenced by Social, Economic, and Political
Factors. Closely related to that culture is bound to a specific
context is that it is significantly influenced by politics, history
as well as the economic circumstances in which is exists as said
by Kleinman, A. (2011). Culture Is Created and Socially
Constructed. Often, culture is perceived as a product –in-place
and as something handed down that ought to be kept in the
manner it is. This gives a static view of culture as well as an
implication that culture is already finished and it is constantly
evolving as people alter it. Culture Is Learned.From the
understanding that culture is created and socially created, it is
factual that it is learned, and neither passed through individuals
6. genes nor inherited. Culture Is Dialectical.Kleinman, A. (2011)
indicated that in most cases, culture is thought of as an absurd
web of consistent and equally helpful values and behaviors,
however nothing could be further from reality. Generally, a
culture is neither good nor bad but rather represents values that
have emerged as a result of historical and social circumstances
and requirements.
Schools are analyzed as the repository of Standard English,
which assumed to be the suitable means of communication for
advancement in academics. However, the experiences of
students are not the same in school. The manner in which they
perceive school is greatly influenced by their social class, race,
gender, family make ups as well as other social disparities.
Distinctions are seen in several aspects like; the traditional
family tree and poverty as said by Kleinman, A. (2011). For
instance, learners from poor families are often absent from
school, sports and other after school activities. In addition, the
traditional science fair draws a clear distinction among learners
of different social classes.
Traditionally, race and ethnicity definition is related to both
biological and social factors respectively. A person’s physical
characteristic like skin and bone structure define race whereas
cultural factors like nationality and local culture characterize
ethnicity. In more broad terms, Race is a term used to refer to
groups of individuals with different and similar biological
characteristics considered by culture to be socially important,
implying that people treat others in a different way because of
them. On the other hand, ethnicity is a term used to refer to
shared cultural practices, points of view and differences that set
a particular group of people separate from another or other
groups as said by Kleinman, A. (2012). Ethnicity is also said to
be a mutual cultural tradition. The various ethnic groups are
commonly distinguished by ancestry, a sense of history,
language, religion and all types of dress. The disparities in
ethnicity are learned, not inherited.
Socioeconomic status (SES) is the measure of the control of the
7. social environment over people, families, societies and learning
institutions. It is related to the concept of social class in several
ways, implying that;
· It has financial stability as a classification foundation
· It is important for a child’s optimal growth and a grown up’s
life satisfaction.
· It has economic disparities as principal influence.
Its concept considers other influences, for instance, the change
for social or economic advancement, policy influence, resources
availability and status of the primary profession.
Difference in socioeconomic status poses several challenges to
students. Majority of low socioeconomic status face emotional
and societal insecurity. Unfortunately, Kleinman, A. (2012)
indicated that students from improvised families tend to be
prone to higher prevalence to adverse factors such as teen
motherhood, depression and inadequate medical attention, all of
which result to less compassion towards infant and afterward,
poor academic performance and conduct on the child’s part as
said by Kleinman, A. (2012). Generally, this difference in SES
brings about emotional and social challenges including;
irritation, impulsivity, gaps in courtesy and social elegances, a
more restricted choice of behavioral responses and a reduced
amount of compassion for other peoples hardships.

Immigration
8. Immigration related anguish has many faces. Many issues arise
when people are forced to leave their place of origin. In
migration cases, the ones often overlooked are the citizen
children of illegal immigrants. Debate over comprehensive
immigration reform has overlooked these citizen children.
Parents usually migrate from their countries due to corruption,
poverty and persecution. In today’s political economic system,
issues with the immigration system can occur and the parents
end up being denied the ability to remain as permanent residents
and forced to leave.
In the case of Elena’s father being deported, this brought about
many changes in Elena’s family’s lives. Elena, a jovial,
hardworking enthusiastic girl experienced emotional trauma
after her father was deported. She no longer had that enthusiasm
or the happiness she once had when her father was around.
Usually, children who go through separation from their parents
face emotional distress, interruptions in schooling and also
economic hardships due to the loss of the family breadwinner
such as access to benefits such as food stamps and also
healthcare can be jeopardized. At times, behavioral problems
can arise at when the child is at school which is mainly caused
by depression and also anger. (Migration Policy Institute, 2015)
Deportations usually create a large number of single mothers
who are struggling to make to take care and support their
children after the deportations of their husbands. Also, children
and their parents live in constant fear of being separated
because they know deportations are happening and they live in
fear that they could be next. Because of this fear of deportation,
these children usually will associate police with immigration
officials. Hence, these citizen children grow up their whole
lives afraid of the police.
Immigration agencies should consider the impacts of separating
children from their families before performing this act. It goes
beyond legal responsibilities because ethics also requires one to
think as a human being.
Registration of immigrant students to schools
9. Immigration children face another issue of being denied access
to education. Some schools prevent these children from
accessing registration. However due to the laws that were
enacted, all immigration children whether they are
discriminated or not entitled to education in public schools.
Therefore immigrant children should be able to register in
public schools to avoid violation of their civil rights. Before
passing of the laws of immigrant families to access education,
many of them living in the United States without legal status
were blocked from registering for school and assessing the
educational services they need. Public schools now have
obligations of not denying admission to children during
enrollment or at any other time on the basis of undocumented
status. They can’t treat a student differently to determine
residency. They can’t engage in any practices to prevent the
right of access to school. Public schools can’t make the children
or parents to disclose or document their immigration

Students facing Deportation
In many schools, children fear being in class and in general
even attending schoolbecause they fear being discovered and
deported. Many students face deportation once a teacher comes
to find out that they are illegal immigrants and end up reporting
them. The government’s decision to assist these students was an
exceptional one. The threat of deportation has been so real to
many students that word of Obama's action led to immediate
celebrations in cities like Los Angeles with many who will

Language
Another issue that poses a problem to the immigrant students is
language barrier. In the film ‘speaking in tongues”, In a nation
where majority of the states declare English as the official
language, the film turns the issue on its head and explores how
bilingualism can be a national resource. We see four students
involved in an educational experiment designed to make them
10. bilingual and biliterate, Durrell a 2nd grader at Starr King
Elementary where his classmates are already reading and
writing in Mandarin. 7th grader at Alice Fong Yu Alternative
School, Kelly Wong reads and writes both Cantonese and
Mandarin. Jason has great grades in middle school, testing
above grade level in both English and Spanish. Julian is a
sophomore at Lowell High School taking the highest level of
Chinese offered in the school district. Their stories all reveal
the potential strength of a multilingual America. This film
questions rote debates about immigration, and what it means to
be American in the 21st century.
In a state like California, it passed “English Only” law,
but I think it needs to be changed. I understand and agree with
that “to live in United States, a person must be able to speak
English.” It is important to provide English environment at
school, but we need more than that. The Spanish population is
growing, and other foreigner distribution rate is growing too.
Only providing ESL classes are not enough to help ELL
students. Young age ELL are better at learning new language,
but Students who moved to United States at high school age will
suffer from learning English and adapting American Culture.
We’ve learned from the last topic about bilingual immersion
Schools. If I am a parent, I would love to send my kid to
Bilingual immersion school before age 13 rather than make
them attending Los Angeles Unified schools.

11. Diversity in the Classrooms
Religious Diversity in the classrooms is very important because
implementing lesson plans helps the students to express their
own identities while learning about diverse religious and also
non-religious beliefs. The students are able to use a variety of
resources to explore common themes among different religious
traditions. Even though public schools are not allowed to teach
religion, teaching about religion in a secular context is
permitted. This is also important because it safely and
effectively teaches about religion and religious differences
using critical literacy strategies, it helps students explore their
own identities and the identities of others through
developmentally appropriate lesson plans and classroom
activities. It also promotes empathy and respectful curiosity and
combat stereotypes, prejudice and bullying. (TANENBAUM)
This week’s module was very interesting for me. I am not a
teacher, but I went to high school and college in United States. I
had not thought about the religious diversity of my peers yet. I
agree with that K-12 teachers should be aware of Guidelines for
teaching about Religion in schools in the United States. I was
pretty shocked when I saw my quiz score about religions. I
realized that I do not have enough knowledge with religions. I
go to church, but I had not gotten a chance to study the bible, so
I didn’t get some of questions upon it either. From the quiz, I
checked “Yes, permitted,” to a question following “According
to rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, is a public school teacher
permitted to lead a class in prayer, or not?” If I went over whole
“Guidelines for Teaching about Religion in K-12 Public Schools
in the United States,” I would have got it correctly. So, I took
the test twice, once before reading it, another after reading it. It
helped me a lot to get some brief ideas. (TEACHING

Teachers have a very important part when it comes to religious
diversity in the classrooms such as not promoting any particular
religion or lack of religious belief, they should not give
personal views or even support those of certain students, they
12. must be very sensitive to respect, and not interfere with a
student’s religious beliefs and practices. The students should
also not be encouraged to accept or conform to specific
religious beliefs or practices. (Anti-Defamation League )
The second chapter on gender and sexuality, many different
lessons that were held for students surprised me. I remember
one reading from the internet, that homosexual forms by social
activity, or home environment.I have no chance to watch kids,
students closely. But even from watching neighborhoods, or
listening to neighborhoods’ story, I can tell that many words are
said by children that can interrupt them to form understanding
the different gender identities. Gender roles are created by
teaching, and learning. Schools and teachers can support it with
good programs or lessons. (Lorber, 1994)
Policies and Curriculum reforms are important to protect
students from bullying and also harassment and also to decrease
discrimination against many targeted groups such as bisexual,
lesbian, gay and transgender. Teachers are the ones who are
responsible for implementing these reforms but most of them
lack the necessary training and knowledge in these areas to do
so effectively. It is important for teachers to become
knowledgeable about such issues in order to ensure student
safety, physical and emotional health and also diversity and
equity. (Psychology Today, 2010)
Third part “At Risk vs. Resiliency & School Violence.,” brought
me a lot of thoughts. Violence should be ended. I heard a lot of
stories from my friends who went to High schools in Los
Angeles District. They described as many of students at their
school were carrying guns or knives. They were ready to be
aggressive, violent. I think schools and teachers need to control
and educate students more on that. From the documentary
“Valentine Road”, Larry got shot twice from the back by his
classmate Brandon and he died two days later. Larry was
struggling with his identity; he started wearing makeup and
heeled boots to school. At that time, Brandon, who was
Caucasian, showed interest in white supremacist ideology. On
13. Valentine’s Day game, Larry asked Brandon to be his Valentine.
Problem outbreak! Teachers and schools should have helped
them form identities.
The issue of school violence has been noted by the government
and federal and state laws have been kept in place to tackle this
issue. Teachers also need to pay close attention to students who
report some symptoms such as an increase in believing that they
are too unsafe to attend school, depression and also suicidal
thoughts, more psychologically distress than the students who
were never victimized so as to avoid school violence.

performance, school facilities, and teaching staff.
Beverly Hills High School appreciates tremendous
support from parents, community and city,
allowing our students to enjoy an extraordinary
educational experience. The success of our
students is well documented. Each year, we have
students who qualify to attend some of the top
universities in the world. Our curriculum is based
on the University of California requirements, and
our rigor is second to none. The accomplishments
of our alumni over the years are a clear indication
of how well our students are prepared, reflecting
our success in Performing Arts, Athletics,
Robotics, Academic Decathlon, Service Learning
and more. We truly believe that we have
something for everyone, and we strongly
encourage all of our students to participate in our

Beverly Hills Unified School District is located in
the western portion of Los Angeles, just below the
Santa Monica mountains and next door to West
Hollywood. Almost 4,200 students in grades
kindergarten through twelve receive a rigorous,
standards-based curriculum from dedicated and
highly qualified professionals. The district is
comprised of four K-8 schools, one
comprehensive high school, and one continuation
high school.

Beverly Hills High School offers students an
extensive and challenging range of studies
designed to develop the skills they will need to
succeed in college, the workplace, and in life.
Classes meet five times a week for 54 minutes
per period. Service-learning is an integral part of
the high school’s standard curriculum and a
regular component of class lessons and projects.
Students are assigned to a team of staff
members; each team is referred to as a “House”.
Beverly Hills High School has three Houses, with
guidance provided by a designated group of
counselors, assistant principal, and college

behavioral guidance; the assistant principal
monitors student progress, discipline, and

Beverly Hills High School has always benefited
from strong community support and involvement.
The partnership between the City of Beverly Hills
and its schools is quite unique. The community
cares deeply for the quality of instruction and
support provided for both students and teachers.
Parents are invited to volunteer their time, attend
school events, or share in the decision-making
process. Staff welcome parents’ help with
fundraisers, graduation activities, athletics, and
performing arts. Parents are encouraged to
attend Back to School Night, Open House,
Coffee with the Counselors, College Night,
Freshman Orientation, and Homecoming.
School Site Council, PTSA (Parent Teacher

provide opportunities for parents to have input
on curricular programs and financial planning.

a variety of formats. The Norman Bulletin is
published three times a week and features the
week’s schedule, important reminders, tutoring
services, and announcements regarding school
activities, club activities, and sports. Parents
may access Beverly Hills High School’s website

about the school, staff e-mail, activities,
homework, daily bulletins, schedules, and
current school news. The district sponsors an
online student information system that parents
may access to obtain their child’s current course
grades. Many of the students’ parents
communicate with teachers via e-mail.
Blackboard Connect is an Internet-based
telephone messaging system that forwards
personalized messages from school staff to
each student’s home.

aDequate yearly Progress
The Federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
requires that all students perform at or above the
proficient level on the state’s standards based
assessments by 2014. Meeting AYP milestones
helps determine whether students are reaching
proficiency level targets set by NCLB. AYP
requires annual evaluation and reporting of the
academic progress of all students and defined
student subgroups. The 2015 AYP report
indicators include a target of 95% participation
rate, 90% attendance rate, and 90% graduation
rate. The percent proficient category is not
applicable (N/A) for 2015 because the
Department of Education (ED) granted
California a one-year waiver that allows AYP
determinations to exclude the percent
proficient.

Physical fitness
In the spring of each year, Beverly Hills High
School is required by the state to administer a
physical fitness test to all students in ninth
grade. The physical fitness test measures each
student’s ability to complete six fitness tasks in
six major areas. Students that either meet or
exceed the standards in at least five of the six
fitness areas are considered to be physically fit
or in the “healthy fitness zone.” Comparative

(CAHSEE) is a state-mandated test given to
10-12 grade students to measure student
proficiency in math and language arts. The
CAHSEE helps identify students who are not
developing skills that are essential for life after
high school and encourages schools to give
these students the attention and resources
needed to help them achieve these skills during
their high school years.
Students must pass the language arts and
math components of the examination to be
eligible for a high school diploma. The test is
initially given to students in the tenth grade.
Students are given numerous chances to pass
the test during their sophomore, junior, and
senior years. Proficiency scores from the test
are used as a determination of Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP) as noted in the AYP section of

Targeted Assistance. Title I Schoolwide schools

Beverly Hills High School provides a safe, clean
environment for learning through proper facilities
maintenance and campus supervision. Original
school buildings were constructed in 1927; the
Swim-Gym was completed in 1940 and between
1967 and 1970, the north wing to the main
building, a four-story building with classrooms,
and a two-level parking garage were completed.
The campus also includes a science and
technology building. Ongoing and routine
maintenance through the school year ensures
facilities remain in good working condition.

In November 2008, the Beverly Hills community
approved a $334 million general obligation bond
(Measure E) to facilitate modernization and
safety-related upgrades of Beverly Hills Unified
School District’s elementary and high school
facilities. During the 2014-15 school year, the
high school swim gym scoreboard replacement

phase was completed for the renovation project,
the Board of Education approved initial
construction estimates, and the construction
document drawing packages along with interim
house packages were submitted to the Division

Beverly Hills High School works closely with the
district’s Maintenance & Operations Department
(M&O) for larger projects, routine facilities
maintenance projects, and school inspections.
The most recent facilities inspection at Beverly
Hills High School took place on January 7,
2016. Schools are required by state law to
report the condition of their facilities; the School
Facility Good Repair Status table illustrated in
this report identifies the state-required
42. inspection areas, disclosing the operational
status in each of those areas.
The School Facilities & Safety section of the
SARC is based on the Office of Public School
Construction (OPSC) Facility Inspection Tool
(FIT). The FIT uses specific criteria for a visual
inspection, and is not based on exhaustive
structural analyses. Under the FIT criteria, all
buildings have been rated as either “Good” or
“Fair,” except three spaces that have already
been closed down pending planned upgrades.
Through structural analyses, 14 buildings/
spaces have been identified as eligible for State
matching funds for seismic mitigation (SMP).
Nine of these are being completed under Measure E, with the
remaining five to be completed under
a future bond. See table below for status of all buildings.

Maintenance & Operations (M&O) employs a
work order process enabling school staff to
communicate unscheduled maintenance needs,
urgent repairs, or special projects. Teachers and
staff submit requests to the school’s office
manager who prepares and forwards an
electronic work order to M&O for resolution.
Emergency situations are immediately resolved
either by the school custodian or district
maintenance staff; general requests are typically
addressed within two weeks.
Campus facilities are cleaned daily; two full-time
day custodians, seven full-time evening
custodians, and one full-time groundskeeper are
assigned to Beverly Hills High School and work
closely with the principal for routine
maintenance, daily custodial duties, and
preparation for special events. The
administration and the lead custodian
communicate daily via two-way radio, cell phone
and e-mail as needed regarding campus
cleaning needs and safety concerns. Every
morning before school begins, the lead
custodian and security officers inspect the
facilities for safety hazards, graffiti, or other
conditions that require removal prior to students
and staff entering school grounds.
The day custodians are responsible for general
upkeep of campus grounds and keeping
restrooms, classrooms, offices, cafeteria, and
other facilities in an orderly and secure
46. condition. Custodians frequently check
restrooms in passing throughout the day to
ensure they are kept safe, sanitary, and
adequately stocked. The evening custodians
are responsible for comprehensive cleaning of
classrooms, restrooms, offices, cafeteria, and
other facilities; daily duties include cleaning
student desktops. The groundskeeping team is
responsible for general landscaping and
irrigation projects.
suPervision & safety
The Beverly Hills Police Department provides
additional traffic support during the morning
hours in front of campus. Additionally, security
officers are present on campus during the
school day starting at 5:30 a.m. and extending
through 10:30 p.m. each day. Beverly Hills High
School rotates six full time Security Officers
each day on campus. During lunch, security
officers and administrators share supervision of
students in the cafeteria, front lawn, and
common gathering areas. When students are
dismissed at the end of the day, security officers
are present to observe students traveling to
after school activities or leaving campus in a
safe and orderly manner.

Teachers have established grade-appropriate classroom
management programs to maintain an
effective learning environment. On the first day of school,

expectations, safety procedures, and course outlines. Students
are reminded of their obligations
to conduct themselves in a responsible, respectful manner
throughout the year in school bulletins,
morning announcements, assemblies, and class discussions.
Progressive disciplinary measures begin in the classroom when

Credit completion and course grades are
closely monitored regularly by counselors and
the school’s intervention counselor. Intervention

peer tutoring, SST, College Center, College
Recruitment Center, Title I program for 9th and
10th grade students, and referral to the
continuation high school. Students who are

Beverly Hills High offers supplemental classes

math, which include reading skills intervention

from the Maple Center are accessed for tutoring
as well as small group counseling to address

Instructional materials for grades K-8 are selected from
the state’s most recent list of standards-based materials
and adopted by the State Board of Education.

based and approved by the district’s Board of Education.
The district follows the State Board of Education’s
adoption cycle for core content materials and for
textbook adoptions in foreign language, visual and
performing arts, and health. District textbook review and
adoption activities occur the year following the state’s
adoption. For a period of 30 days prior to adoption,
parents may visit the district office to review textbooks
that have been recommended for adoption by the Board
of Education.
On September 29, 2015, Beverly Hills Unified School
District’s Board of Education held a public hearing to
certify the extent to which textbooks and instructional
57. materials have been provided to students. The Board of
Education adopted Resolution #2015-2016-005 which
certifies as required by Education Code §60119 that (1)
textbooks and instructional materials were provided to
all students, including English Learners, in the district to
the extent that each pupil has a textbook or instructional
materials, or both, to use in class and to take home to
complete required homework assignments, (2) sufficient
textbooks and instructional materials were provided to
each student, including English Learners, in math,
science, history-social science, and English/language
arts, including the English language development
component of an adopted program, consistent with the
cycles and content of the curriculum frameworks, (3)
sufficient textbooks or instructional materials were
provided to each pupil enrolled in foreign language or
health classes, and (4) sufficient laboratory science
equipment was available for science laboratory classes
offered in grades 9-12 inclusive.
In addition to the core subject areas, districts are
required to disclose in their SARCs the sufficiency of
instruction materials used for its visual/performing arts
curricula. During the 2015-16 school year, all students
enrolled in a visual/performing arts class were provided
with a textbook or supplemental materials to use in class
and to take home. These materials are in alignment with
the Common Core State Standards.

aligned core program. Beverly Hills High
School structures its educational program so

of every student, teachers use a variety of
instructional techniques using research-based
instructional materials and strategies.
Students who regularly experience academic,

are referred to the Student Study Team (SST).

Beverly Hills High School’s special education
program is supported by highly qualified,
caring staff. Special education teachers and
instructional assistants provide instruction in
special day classes or the resource room.
Special education students are mainstreamed as
much as possible into the general education
classroom and provided instruction in the least
restrictive environment. Co-taught courses are
offered for all students (regular education and
special education) in mathematics, science, and
English. Each student’s curricular agenda is
based upon their Individual Education Plan (IEP),
which is reviewed and updated annually by the
school’s IEP teams. The IEP ensures students
with disabilities have equal access to core
curriculum and educational opportunities and
coordinates specially-designed instruction based
upon individual academic, social, and/or
behavioral needs.
Students identified as English Learners (EL) are
placed with a teacher who has been certified by
the state to teach English Learners. Teachers
use differentiated instruction and SDAIE
(Specially Designed Academic Instruction
English) strategies in the general education
classroom to help EL students understand lesson
content and concepts. Students may be enrolled
in an English Language Development class as a
supplement to regular language arts to focus on
language development, reading skills, and
68. vocabulary development. In some cases,
students may be enrolled in an EL version of core
classes (ie, EL social studies) until they gain
increased fluency in understanding the English
language. As students increase fluency in the
English language, Beverly Hills High School
continues to monitor their performance through
the CELDT and adjust instruction as needed to
ensure continued success.
Beverly Hills High School hosts a series of
intervention programs to meet the needs of those
students not meeting state proficiency standards
in reading, language arts and math. Title I
support in English Language Arts and Math is
provided by Title I teachers who are designated
to provide targeted assistance to those students
who qualify for Title I services. A recommendation
for student participation comes from a counselor,
the Student Study Team, instructional staff/
teachers, or the student’s parent based upon
classroom performance or state/district
assessment results. Student success through
intervention programs is achieved when
proficient and/or advanced levels of performance
are demonstrated. Intervention strategies may
include:
• Intervention counselor services: provides
personal and emotional guidance for students
at risk of failing coursework or not meeting
graduation requirements
• Peer lunch tutoring provided in the career
center during lunch time and after school
• Maple Center tutoring: after-school tutoring is
provided by community volunteers. Parents
may contact the center directly to arrange for
tutoring sessions

Beverly Hills High School recruits and employs
the most qualified credentialed teachers. For
the 2014-15 school year, the school employed
102 fully credentialed teachers. The Federal
No Child Left Behind Act requires that all
teachers in core subject areas meet certain
requirements in order to be considered as
“NCLB Compliant”. Minimum qualifications
include: possession of a bachelor’s degree,
possession of an appropriate California
teaching credential, and demonstrated
competence in core academic subjects.

support services staff, through close
collaboration, is instrumental in improving
student attendance and achievement through
the identification, referral, and remediation of
health and/or emotional concerns. School
counselors provide academic guidance,
discuss social issues and conflict resolution,
and identify and resolve diverse issues
interfering with a student’s ability to learn and
succeed in school. Beverly Hills High School’s
intervention counselor provides assistance for
students struggling with psychological,
emotional, and/or social barriers. Students

referred by their teachers, parent, academic
counselors, the college counselor, or
administrators. The intervention counselor,
academic counselors, and assistant principals
review student grades every five weeks to

with academic, social, and emotional issues as
well as provide assessments to determine
eligibility for special education services and
facilitate coordination of Individual Education
Plans (IEP). School nurses conduct health
screening programs; health technicians
provide basic first aid as well as health care
services. Beverly Hills High School welcomes
volunteers from the city’s Maple Center, a
regional counseling center, that sponsors
activities with the students and discussions on
social and conflict resolution skills. The Maple
Center has an office located on campus to
provide maximum accessibility five days a
week during school hours.
