Critical Appraisal Byrne , C., (2012), Jeesis is alive! He is the King of Australia: segregated
religious instruction, child identity and exclusion. British Journal of Religious Education. 34 (3)
pp. 317 331.
This paper outlines a critical appraisal for a research paper conducted by Cathy Byrne (2012).
Byrnes paper is an exploratory case study into the impact of segregated religious instruction in
public schools. She argues that segregated religious instruction influences identity development and
may lead to exclusionary behaviours in students. This essay argues that Byrnes use of an
exploratory research design is an appropriate and useful approach as this method provides the
researcher with a greater understanding of the topic and allows the researcher to gain clarity in
defining the nature of the research problem (Manerika Manerika , 2014, p.95). It also helps Byrne
define a problem statement for her future research. However, the nature of this approach is
associated with significant limitations, which in Byrnes paper, were coupled with problems in the
research title and method that affected the believability and validity of the study. There are also
issues with the overall argument of the paper which is based on the assumption that Special
Religious Education in Australian schools are segregated without defining segregation or
adequately proving that grouping students by religious identity for religious

Design Management Is Necessary For A Successful Project...
Critical appraisal
Design is the process whereby the attributes of a client are developed and documented so that they
can be procured. It is very important stage in the design procurement process and has a major
pressure on the outcome of the project. Lot of concentration is paid to overall project management,
as evidenced by techniques developed over the last 15 years. This critical view examines the
particular nature of design management process and the concrete issues that should to be considered
in order to establish the felicitous controls.
In recent years there has been an improved development for the need of design management in
construction. Effective design management is necessary for a successful project but the clear
picture of design management is not understood properly (S Austin, 2002). Design is a very key
aspect of construction and with the help of a good team; good sustainable projects can be
produced. The need for improvement of design in construction is very necessary. Delivering the
project on time, budget and providing a value to construction is needed (S Austin, 2002). However
the role of a design manager is poorly noted and does not have a robust path (Newton, n.d.).
Design management Dates back to early times where it was influenced with number of different
attributes like architecture, software development, engineering. During the 1960 design
management was considered as managing design

Warren Buffet Essay
Warren Buffett Warren Edward Buffett is known for being a famous American investor. He was
born in Omaha, Nebraska on August 30, 1930. Warren was born to Leila and Howard Buffett.
His father, Howard, was a stockbroker and also became a member of congress. Warren showed
early signs of being entrepreneurial through being involved in various business dealings as a child.
He also made his first investment in the stock market when he was just 11 years old. In his teen
years he began studying at the Wharton school of finance at University of Pennsylvania. He then
went on to Columbia University to receive his master s degree. While going to school there he met

the best investment he ever made. Benjamin Graham died in the early seventies leaving Buffett

The Star Wars Trilogy
A directors cut, is a specified edit of a version of a film (or video game, music video, etc.) that is
suppose to represent a vision closer to that of the director. In 2004, director George Lucas had an
interview with Associated Press, and states that the Star Wars series only represented 25 or 30 per
cent of what he wanted it to be. In the following paragraphs, I will show you how editing scenes
differently can and will change the outlook of characters and the story of Star WarsIV: A New Hope.
Due to the great commercial success of the Star Wars series, George Lucas was given the
opportunity to rerelease Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hopealong with the two other movies in the

Before the 1997 version, the audience hears the name Jabba the Hutt, but has no idea what or
who he is in A New Hope and the following movie in the series The Empire Strikes Back only too
see him for the first time in Return of the Jedi.
Finding out about Jabba the Hutt s appearance and likeness delivers a huge blow to character
development. It takes the mystery out of finding out who this guy that is constantly being talked
about. Ruining a plot mystery like this can ruin the surprise to endings of a story instead of letting
it all unfold.
Another change that happen between versions of Star Wars IV: A New Hope, is the various CGI
added and changed though out the whole movie. Stormtroopers, explosions, and Alliance fighters
are added, changed, and taken away in various scenes in the 1997 and 2011 versions of Star Wars
IV: A New Hope; however, I m going to focus on the Death Star battle scene.
The Death Star battle, or Battle of Yavin, is a climatic scene where the (first) Death Star, a giant
moon shaped space station and weapon with abilities to destroy planets with its super laser, is
destroyed by the Rebellion. This is actually Luke Skywalker s first step to becoming a Jedi by
showing his leadership skills and his skill potential.
During this battle, large amounts of ships are added to the scene in the 1997 version. This makes the

Good and Faithful Servant
In the book of Matthew Jesus distributes talents to three servants. One servant received five
talents, one two, and the other one. Each servant was expected to reap according to what they had
been given; therefore, servant one was to reap five, servant two, two, and servant three, one.
However, at the end of the parable, only servant one and two had fulfilled their task. Servant three
did not. Just as Jesus had given his servants a task, I will be given tasks, much like this assignment,
to complete under the Christian Liberal Arts Curriculum. It is my job to be as servant one and two
were to fulfill my tasks that are given. With that in mind, I shall achieve all of my vocational and
avocational desires by valuing what the Christian Liberal Arts Curriculum has to offer faith,
freedom, and education. One of the key core values of the Christian Liberal Arts Curriculum is
faith. It is incorporated into every aspect of the experience, yet it is not forced upon me. I am

classes as I can is going to make me a more valuable employee because I will be able to complete
both simple and complicated task. My intelligence will help me in my avocational activities as

His Coy Mistress Allusions
To be a human in this world one is aware that time is set differently for each individual. In To His
Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell the speaker is well alert of time, the lover arguments in favor of
pursuing pleasure while he and the nameless woman are still physically together. While reading this
3 poetic paragraphs, it is noticeable that the speakeris passionate and honest while using playful
images, allusion and symbolism into trying to get an opportunity with the woman to a sexual
relationship before timeruns out on them.
The speaker in this poem uses a wide variety of different combinations of words put together.
Starting with admiring her and describing his love. In the opening stanza the speaker uses two
different biblical allusions to specifically let the woman know her refusal option and his love for
her. As the author states I would/ Love you ten years before the flood (Marvell 7 8). In this line

speaker says And yonder all before us lie/ Deserts of vast eternity (Marvell 23 24). Deserts are
being used as a symbol for death and describing it as a big lonely place. When the reader follows
up to the third stanza, the speaker exhort a persuasion in expediency of time running out. He
pleads the lady not to waste any time nor her youth or her beauty, if it s not for some other thing
than pleasure. The speaker persuades even more in this line, Now let us sport us while we may,

to animals, giving the reader a more exotic look of amorous birds. This last stanza gave the reader
a more understanding idea of how the speaker feels the urge of passion by using symbolism in his

How Does Shaw Present Eliza s Transformation
Shaw s creation of a romantic play with an atypical ending establishes and presents a sense of
reality and honesty not ordinarily found within compositions similar to his. The real world is not
full of happy endings, or at least not the expected ones. The Cinderella story of Eliza s
transformation is paralleled by that of a Frankenstein creation of new life , or Higgins molding of
Eliza and her speech (2). The romance presented in the production is centered on Eliza and her
ability to overcome obstacles and achieve something that just months prior seemed insurmountable,
despite a lack of true education, she can pass herself off as a womanof truly high stature. Higgins

Shaw s work of art is not about the fairy tale happy ending but about something believable and
sensible. Slowly over months Liza s tough, gutter , exterior was chipped away to reveal Eliza, a
woman capable of being called a duchess, but not one willing to sit down and serve another.
Independence races through her and the moment she throws the slippers at Higgins pieces are
being restored, she no longer will be a servant of his nor does she want any position that would
make her one for the rest of her life. Any form of relationship to Higgins involving romantic
attachment does not allow Eliza to be herself or to feel superior to anyone. Freddy offers the
companionship she needs, with support, love, and no shadow to stand in. Shaw s romance is
more about the making of her person not of any relationship with another character, it is Eliza s
relationship with herself. Although Eliza s self worth was not determined by her standing in life
she realized that she deserved more, she respected herself enough to know that Higgins was not
the kind of man she would want a relationship with. She needed someone who cared for her
passionately, not one who treated her just as he treated everyone else badly. Eliza is strong and
she finds it within herself to look for the love she deserves and the life she deserves without the
constant ridicule of a man who will never truly respect another s

Youth Baseball Narrative Essay
I first started playing youth baseball back in 2008. I had a passion for it since I was a very young
boy. I used to sit at home on my PlayStation 2 playing MLB the show. My baseball idols are Derek
Jeter, David Ortiz, Jackie Robinson, Sammy Sosa, and Alfonso Soriano. I used to play catch all
the time with my cousin Tristan. As we got older I was able to join a baseballteam with Tristan, and
we made it onto the same team. The team was called Optic. What made Optic the best was our
pitching, to be honest my pitching. We were the best team in our league; we only ever lost to one
team the Bulldogs. They were the undefeated team in our league.
Down goes the pitch, moving at lighting speed! STRIKE! As the batter steps up for his second
plate appearance, he has three balls and two strikes. Men are on second and third base with the
score four to five Optic. While it is the away team who leads the game, it is my very last ... Show

I delivered every single time. My cousin Tristan was a beast. Every time you looked for a deep
hit ball you looked towards him. He always knew had to turn a 0 2 count into a third base hit. He
may not have been fast on the base paths but he knew how to work a bat. We always went to
baseball fields and helped each other improve all the time. Most of our days were spent outside
throwing the baseball fast back and forth to each other. I was not able to play my whole life like
I really wanted to. I could not because my grandparents were going through a divorce and I was
not able to play baseball on a team since my last season in 2014. I throw the ball around every

watching baseball live or on television is enough to make my day. Watching a match up between
the Boston Red Sox play and the New York Yankees is just crazy. It is a rivalry to end all

Odyssey And The Trojan War
There are few works of literature that hold as much meaning to the definition of Greek culture as
the two epic poems credited to Homer: the Iliad and the Odyssey. Both works, albeit more so the
Iliad than the Odyssey, serve as the chief source of information about a pivotal event in Greek
history: the Trojan War. Whether this war happened exactly as it has been narrated is subject to
debate, as any answer holds very little evidence to be supported. However, the Greeks saw the
Trojan War as the first time there was unity within their culture as they all fought for a common
goal. As such, many regarded the Trojan war as an important event in defining the central values
and virtues of Greek culture; they would revisit these epics time and time

customer expectations and needs, Carnival considered it as one of its critical success factors.
Carnival s conservative stance toward IT was also thought to have paid dividends due to the low
success rate of many companies who tried the CRM approach.
2. Should CCL develop a CRM strategy? Why, and for what purpose?
Yes, because they want to know their customers better by analyzing data with the purpose of
gaining new customers and increasing the loyalty from existing customers. Carnival was just
beginning to experiment with loyalty program to incent customers to spend more money on board;
and there was growing recognition at carnival of the value of business intelligence about customers
to solve complaints. Also, the firm had the experience of a sophisticated revenue management

3. How should CCL approach the implementation of a CRM strategy?
Currently, CCL only devoted a fraction of a full time equivalent employee to customer data
analysis, though several data analytic projects were currently in the work. Basically CCL should
take into consideration the following:
(1) Hire or contract specialized consultants to help in the implementation; (2) Verify the accuracy

Rhetorical Analysis Of Pearl Harbor Speech
Hours after Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan, gaining worldwide headlines, giving millions
unanswered questions, the speech, Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation was given one day after
the event. On December 8th 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech to be
remembered today, by using rhetorical devices and figurative language to strongly picture his
message to the public, making great use of parallel structure, personification, parallelism, and
climax ordering to enforce his key point of wanting Americans to stand up against the Japanese
forces for the deliberate actions done towards there peaceful country, with no threat or hint of
war or of an armed attack. With hopes of gathering support for the decision to declare war on
Japan. Personification is commonly used throughout the speech, Pearl Harbor Address, that was
given to the nation by President D. Roosevelt. First off, seen in the very beginning of the speech,
a date which will live in infamy, is an effective use of personification. Obviously a date can t live
in infamy which makes it personification, he uses it to draw more attention to the date. Later in
the speech, Roosevelt says, The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. Roosevelt
uses personification here by saying that facts are speaking, allowing them to further stand out.
The first quote works by describing the day of tragedy to forever be remembered as infamy,
readers and listeners are more aware of the destruction done. Making it seem like their is nothing
that they can now do but go to war with Japan. The second quote works by drawing attention to the
facts, in hope of the facts angering the people in order to convince them to his side. Later,
throughout the speech Roosevelt effectively uses parallelism to try and get more people to support
him. To begin, towards the end of the speech Roosevelt states, There is no blinking at the fact that
our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger. , Roosevelt starts the sentence with a
metaphor, but continues to use the phrase, our, saying, our people, our territory, and our interests,
creating attention for what he is about to say next, witch is what makes this quote parallelism.

Artemisia In The Last Painting Lucretia
realism shown in the groin wrinkle, the crow s feet wrinkles at the right armpit, the lines in her
neck, the pendant breasts, and the recognizably feminine abdomen (Image 200). Even so,
Artemisia depicts the female form as more muscular and toned than the female bodies seen in
most contemporaneous works by male artists. Though Susanna is seated, she is resisting the
advances of the elders, and a cry is coming from her open mouth illustrating her alarm. Her shame
of being naked in front of the elders is palpable in her downcast eyes and the flush on her cheeks.
Artemisia created suspense and a sense of anxiety in the paintingby expressing a threat of rape in

Lucretia is about to kill herself to spare her family the dishonor of her rape. Artemisia portrays
Lucretia as a common woman rather than an idealized figure from classical antiquity. Lucretia s
physical flaws and emotional vulnerability are apparent. The influence of Caravaggio is now
obvious in Artemisia s work through the close focused composition of the singular figure,
Lucretia, emerging from a dark background, harshly illuminated in typical tenebrist manner that
creates a dramatic impact as Artemisia halts Lucretia s hand in action grasping the dagger, blade
upward and not aimed directly at her breast, while her other hand clutches her breast in a
moment of conflict as she struggles for the courage to complete the act (Garrard, Image 115).
Also, as typical of Caravaggio, Artemisia portrays a single moment of narrative with a
heightened sense of suspense and drama (Mann, 100). Artemisia depicts Lucretia seated in a
contrapposto or counter pose and Lucretia s leg forms the base of a conventional Renaissance
pyramid with her head at its apex. In art, contrapposto describes a figure that stands (or in this
case sits) with one leg holding the full weight of the body, while the other leg is relaxed. This
classical pose rests the hips and shoulders at opposite angles and gives a slight curve to the

Frederick Douglass was a powerful voice for African Americans. he was born a slavery yet was

country. he was an abolitionist, advocate for equal rights and was a part of the anti slavery
society. He spoke on July 5, 1852, in Rochester, New York. His speech was called The Meaning
of July Fourth for the Negro . The purpose of his speech was to give his opinions on the well
known holiday, the fourth of July. Reading the speech made me feel dumbfounded, amused and
frustrated The Fourth of July is America s independence day from Britain. However, slaves
remained in the same position until after the civil war. This is the reason why Douglass says and
believes This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn. To drag a man in
fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and call upon him to join you in joyous
anthems, were inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony. I m left both speechless and amused on
how true this statement is. Americans expected everyone to celebrate their day with them. While

Harassment Towards Women Playing Educational Sports
Sports have always been an intrical part of America s culture and society, from playing baseball
in the front yard to knocking a homerun out of the ballpark, but this playing in the fields only
applied to boys. Unfortunately, before Title Nine was established in 1972, there was a great deal
of harassment towards women playing educational sports. This new amendment to the Civil Acts,
broke down the barriers for women, and demanded proportionality between men s and women s
athletic programs. Due to the way of society 35 years ago, Title Nine was necessary for women to
receive equal rights in educational sports. Title Nine, an act passed in 1972, prohibits
discrimination in all areas of educationand provides equality for both men and women in
education systems. However, Title Nine is most importantly known for its athletic achievements
and endeavors. This federal law, in regards to educational athletic programs, states that no person
in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the
benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving
federal financial assistance , according to the Forum of Public Policy. In other words, females are
allowed to play in sports in educational athletic programs and receive the same equal opportunities
and treatment as male athletes. Separate teams must be provided for males and females, otherwise
both shall be allowed to try out for the same team.

William Shakespeare s Othello
ENG 1001: Nothing is funnier than unhappiness, I grant you that. Yes, yes, it s the most comical
thing in the world (Samuel Beckett).
Wilde, Shakespeare and Beckett incorporate two genres in their plays that nursed a strong intrigue
interest (Jones, pg 26) comedy and tragedy. According to Aristotle in his Poetics, tragedyin a play
is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete and of a certain magnitude composed of plot,
character, thought, diction, melody and spectacle, (Myers, pg 118). Conventionally, comedies end
happily in which real world conflicts are resolved. In this essay I am going to demonstrate how
each of the playwrights challenge the traditional ideology of comedy and tragedy.
Comical elements in Othello are limited, however a neoclassical critic stated, there is in this play,
some burlesque, some humour and a ramble of comical wit and therefore, Othello as a whole is
none other than a Bloody Farce (Rymer). To an extent I agree with this comment, however
Othello is evidently more tragic than comical. The distasteful comedy based on racial stereotypes
further delineates a tragic response to the play, Awake/...or else the devil will make a grandsire of
you (I.I.90 91). The misogynous, racist and heretic language is explicitly apparent and distinctive
to show the idea of cross breeding, raising anxieties about reproduction and the classification of
things, ... you ll have coursers for cousins and jennets for germans! (I.I.112)

(Wonderlich, Silvia A 165). However, it was different from other drinking vessels. It was used
as a piece of weaponry or armour prop by King Pterelas during his comedic plays (Polt,
Christopher 233). The verb potirara means to drink which plays off the word Pater. (Polt,

audience had looked at King Pterelas, he was portrayed as a drunk (Polt, Christopher 233).
Pterelas was not a king who merely drank, but one who drank continuously (Polt, Christopher

Octavia is represented seated holding a scepter and a Patera (Frazer, J.G 23). It only makes
sense to have a goddess pose with something just as valuable as she is. When the Patera was not
being used as prop it was used as a form of sacrifice (Walker, J). The blood of the victim would go
into the Patera has poured into the sea by the way of libation (Walker, J). Most religious people
would abstain from eating or drinking from the Patera because of the sacrifices that were being
done (Smith, William and Anthon, Charles 738). The Pateras function meant a lot to people either

Project Scope Of A Graduate Curriculum
Problem Statement
Recommendations by the WHO, 2011 and AACN, 2012 have supported implementation of a
graduate curriculum that will educate trainees on quality improvement initiatives that include
topics on near misses, factors surrounding errors and error management in the clinical setting. In the
College of Nursing, nurse anesthesia department, there is no designated educational module
addressing this recommendation.
The concern with not educating trainees before graduation is that incident and near misses tend to
remain underreported because of the perpetuating negative culture surrounding error reporting. This
in turn hinders learning from the event and stifles growth toward voluntary sharing of broken
processes and system failures (Barnsteiner, 2011). The current focus on Quality Improvement is to
provide high reliable care with little to zero risks by including the combined and unceasing efforts
of everyone healthcare professionals, patients and their families, researchers, payers, planners and
educators to make changes that will lead to better patient outcomes (health), better system
performance (care) and better professional development (IHI, 2015).

Current Diagnostic Criteria For Sarabeth s Disorders
Current diagnostic criteria for SaraBeth s disorders is better explained by criterion A D in
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and criterion A E in Anxiety Disorder due to another
medical condition. OCD criteria A requires that the individual have the presence of obsession and
/or compulsions. SaraBeth reports obsessions of recurrent and persistent thoughts about harm
coming to her parents and although she had attempted to ignore these thoughts she continues with
performing her compulsions. SaraBeth s compulsions are evident by reported repetitive behaviors
of performing ritual prayers, persistent checking on the iron and stove and although SaraBeth can
admit that her fear is unrealistic, she continues the compulsions in order to feel better or to relieve
oneself. Criteria B requires that the obsessions and/or compulsions be time consuming (more than
one hour) or cause clinically significant distress or impairments in important areas of function.
SaraBeth has stated that can spend three to four hours during the day engaged in checking
behaviors. Criteria C entails that the obsessions compulsive symptoms are not attributable to the
physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition. SaraBeth currently has no
indication of a medical condition or substance use prior to the first onset of her obsessive
compulsive symptoms. Criteria D requires that the disturbance not better explained by the

introduces his viewpoint by saying: In the newspaper I read that, even though our sprawling system
of interstate highways is crumbling, the president has decided that we should triple it in size, and
all without raising our taxes a nickel. Only a populace drunk on driving, a populace infatuated with
the myth of the open road, could hear such a proposal without hooting (lines 20 26). In this
example, Scott Russell Sanders mentions the expansion of interstate... Show more content on

Thus, he evokes the support of his idea that moving is unreasonable and illogical within the reader.
In addition, the author opposes Rushdie s enthusiasm for migration by quoting Rushdie s words on
the elimination of nationalism that comes with moving. Sanders then says, ... who would pretend
that a history of migration has immunized the United States against bigotry? And even if, by
uprooting ourselves, we shed our chauvinism, is that all we lose? (lines 40 43) Sanders uses
rhetorical questions to show reader that nationalism may be lost when people move, but the
greater aspects of a country may be lost as well. With this said, the author includes historical
references to verify his claim that many of the worst abuses have been carried out by people who
root themselves in ideas rather than places . Scott Russell Sanders includes how nations have been
sabotaged after migration when he says: Migrants often pack up their visions and values with the
rest of their bagages and carry them along. The Spaniards devastated Central and South America by

Bribing Corrupt Bureaucrats Might Not Be a Terrible Idea...
This is an excellent way to show that as a human race we are constantly looking for a mode of
perfection but that mode is never there because we can never find it. What we can do is to get
as close as possible to the ideal situation. This ideal situation should mean that there is some form
of Pareto efficiency in the system and most people stand to benefit. If the value system allows for
the existence of some classes to gain more than others this will create inequality. In such a case the
government will always try to change policies to make the shift. But then the problem is that
sooner of later another class will prevail of the current ruling classes will continue to hold some

The exposition of the IT is also a contributor towards this. The Gandhian morality of not
showcasing your wealth no longer holds true when a certain business man in Mumbai builds a

such successful entrepreneurs. The height of the positives of economic reforms took place when
India can acheievd a growth rate of 9% in 2007 . Today India is known as among the 10 largest
economies of the world.
But having stated all this, it needed to note that India still stands poorly in world social
parameters. We still are amongst the pooter nations of the world. Poverty ranks are still high. We
are one of the most corrupt nations in the world and indexes do not rank us well. Socially our
parameter are not high. This will sooner or later reflect upon our economics as well. This will be
demonstrated in the rest of the essay. Corruption is considered bad and after the several scams that
have hit India over the apst 4 5 years we have clearly not changed things. But there are studies that
suggest otherwise.
The 2005 paper suggests that bribing bureaucrats might not be such a bad idea. This is because the
corrupt bureaucrats can force the government into talking helpful measures. The need for these
measures might be a result of the demands from the bribers who expects some changes from the
corrupt bureaucrats. The economy could benefit

Global Climate Change Causes And Effects On The...
What do you know about global climate change? Do you think we create this problem in the
twentieth first century to damage our planet. This problem started at the beginning of civilization
and became worse during the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth century. Older generations
generated more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuel and
deforestation. More carbon dioxide had a negative impact on the ecosystems of the planet. And the
scientific definition of global climate represents changes in the earths weather and temperature.
When higher greenhouse gasconcentrates in the atmosphere, the earth becomes warmer. Water
vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane are the gases that lead to the greenhouse effect. Pollution of
the earth causes damage to the ozone layer in the atmosphere, and it s easy for the sun rays to pass
in the earth. Global climate changecauses a negative impact on the environment and the world s
oceans. Global climate change causes many problems for the planet. The population growth of
earth is 7.125 billion. Can anybody imagine how much greenhouse gas we produce in the
atmosphere? Because they re more people on the earth, we need more natural resources in daily
life. People destroy more natural resources like trees to live. Human beings produce more man
made pollution on the land and the ocean environments. For example, coal powered plants,

Analysis Of Lark And Termite By Jayne Anne Phillips
In Lark and Termite, Jayne Anne Phillips advances a distorted conception of time that deliberately
confuses the boundary between past and present. The novel relays the narratives of a set of
interrelated characters, one of which takes place in Korea in 1950 and the rest of which occur in
Winfield, West Virginia in 1959. While these narratives are set apart from one another textually,
Phillips distorts their temporal and spatial relationship to one another throughout the novel by
drawing parallels between characters and events from the past and present, Korea and the United
States. Through this conception of time, as well as her use of spectral figures, she creates a
representation of the haunting effects of war on the next generation the ways in which it literally
shapes both individuals and families. Termite himself is curiously positioned within this distorted
time space dynamic, making him both a symbol of transgenerational trauma and a figure of
existential liminality.
The interweavement of past and present and this portrayal of a liminally positioned Termite
ultimately create a unique setting, a particular distortion of time and place, for the confrontation of
trauma and the victims movement into release.

Items and the Resources Behind Them People all over the world are using resources every day
that they do not even think about. People are not aware of where things come from or what
happens to those things after they are no longer in their possession. In the following paragraphs,
I will look into five specific things I make common use of in a week. I chose to conduct my

from. Additionally, I will look into what happens after they have fulfilled their purpose and
whether they are recyclable or not. Each type of water bottle has a different story. For the most
part however, they are made up of similar materials. It is common that they are made using
Polyethylene terephtalate plastics, which are also known as virgin plastics. The plastic is made
by mixing hydrocarbons that are extracted from crude oil with chemical catalysts. The
manufacturing process is described as each bottle being sterilized, filled, capped, labeled, packed
into cases, and prepared for shipping. Transporting and distributing these bottles consists of
shipping them in lightweight materials which are good for the environment since it cuts down on
fuel costs. Most people only use water bottles until that 1 serving is gone. But they may be reused

How Spokane Is A City Of The State Of Washington
Spokane is a very famous city of the state of Washington, which is located in United States of

humans migrated into this city and nicknamed it as lilac city. On the basis of 2010 census, this
area has a huge population of around 208, 916. On the basis of these population estimates, it can
be said that this city is the second largest city of Washington. Overall, this city has been declared

which was made with the European countries and settlements was the trading post. At the time
when this contract was formed, around 800 Americans were living at this place. Due to this
pact, the environment of hostility which existed between the citizens of Spokane and Europe

Imagery in in Cold Blood
Truly successful authors have the ability to convey their view of a place without actually saying
it, to portray a landscape in a certain light simply by describing it. In the opening paragraphs of In
Cold Blood, Truman Capote does just this. Through his use of stylistic elements such as selection
of detail, imagery, and figurative language, Capote reveals his own solemn and mysterious view of
Holcomb, Kansas, while setting the stage for an imminent change.
Beginning in the first line of the passage, Capote selects the most boring details of life in the small

In addition to including the most boring of details, Capote uses a great deal of imagery to

the area as one that has seen better days, Capote writes about the old stucco structure that no
longer holds dances, the crumbling post office, and the bank that now fails to serve its original
purpose. Combining visual imagery with hints of desolation, Capote attempts to reveal the gray
and boring nature of the town through its appearance. He does not, however, rely only on visual
details; in describing the local accent as barbed with a prairie twang, he uses both auditory and
visual appeal to make one imagine a ranch hand s tone of voice and pattern of speech as he
describes the events of his farming days. The hard blue skies and desert clear air contribute to a
feeling of emptiness, an emotional vacancy that seems omnipresent in the small town. Finally, even
the steep and swollen grain elevators that represent the town s prosperity are seen in a solemn and
mysterious light, as Capote makes certain to mention that the townspeople camouflage this
abundance without explaining why they choose to do so.
Capote also uses a great deal of figurative language and contrasts to portray the small town as

Acute Bronchitis And Common Respiratory Disease
Acute bronchitis is one of the most common diagnoses encountered in a primary care setting. It
affects millions of individuals resulting in significant impact on health of patients and health care
industry. Studies have shown that 90% of times acute bronchitis is caused by a virus, yet health
care providers are failing to treat or manage these patients with appropriate therapies (Knutson

and was in a meeting. Soon after she heard the small explosion, she suddenly realized that all of
the windows were currently being blasted, the roof was caving in, and smoke seemed to appear
from every direction. Before she had analyzed what was going on, she was being yelled at by
Embassy guards to get down on the floor. After fifteen minutes of crawling around without being
able to see, they had reached the ground floor. What Howard saw next terrified her. She saw
lifeless bodies, fires everywhere, and the screams of terrified people. Bill Bar who is director of
the U.S. Information Service in Kenya, was also at the same meeting as Linda Howard. He also
recalls hearing a thump and thought it was possibly the sound of a grenade being thrown at the
embassy. Some also recall hearing gunfire outside of the embassy before the big explosion. Al
Qaeda is the international terrorist group responsible for these two attacks. The mastermind behind
the attacks was named Fazul Abdullah Mohammed. He was recruited by Osama Bin Laden who was
a Saudi millionaire. Osama was the leader that funded and supported Al Qaeda. For

Battle of Marathon This essay talks about the great...
In 490 B.C.E. the Battle of Marathon was a brief but important event in the war between the Greek
city states and The Persian Empire. The results of the battle had unforeseen effects on Athens and
the future of Western Civilization. The Greek Golden Age , centred in Athens, brought about new
forms of art, the foundations of future philosophy and redirected literature and drama. The
achievements of the Athenians during this period were directly connected to the inspiration and
prestige (which later translated into power) fuelled by the events at Marathon. How the events of a
single day changed the entire course of Western Civilization is hard to fathom but obvious when
one looks at the aftermath of that fateful event.
The revolts of a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The victory at Marathon and the successful defence of the city, gave the Athenians a sense of moral
superiority and pride. In later battles of the Persian War, at Thermopylai and Salamis, the highly
regarded Spartans and those of the Peloponnese were largely in control of strategic moves.
Although still a major force in every battle, Athens and her allies were outnumbered and thus
followed Spartan command. After the second occupation of Athens after the battle of Salamis, the
Athenians gave Sparta an ultimatum due to a lack of Spartan support. If the Peloponnesians
wanted Athens navy, they must save Athens land. Because the Athenians had more damage to
recover from it brought stronger confidence and overall pride for them once the city got back on
its feet. The Spartans, Corinthians and other Peloponnesian allies now had reason to fear Athens
growing naval power and its capabilities now that the city was repaired and invigorated with a
renewed sense of pride. This is the point that we see the beginnings of a shift in the balance of
power and influence between the city states. When the Ionian states adopted the Athenians as
leaders, as opposed to the Spartans who had been pre eminent for a long time, the rise of the
Athenian influence began to show. For the purpose of protecting all Greeks from a further Persian
attack, a league was formed, of which Athens was now the leader. The league included

The Role Of Persuasion Within The Reid And Peace Model...
This paper examines the role of persuasion within the Reid and PEACE model techniques of
interrogation and how race and stereotype threats influence these interrogation styles. False
confession is also defined and discussed. A variety of race and cultures are included, focusing
primarily on African American and Caucasian individuals. Police interrogationcan be persuasive in
many ways and effects the potential suspect physiologically and psychologically. Considering the
discussed effects of police interrogation, the PEACE model technique seems to be the most
persuasive technique of police interrogation. The PEACE model technique is preferred more among
police and among the different studies.
The EFFECT OF PERSUASION 3
The Effect of Persuasion in Police Interrogation and False Confession In January 1988 Michael
Crow, a caucasian boy who is fourteen years old, confessed to murdering his older sister in their
childhood home. Crow was interrogated for ten hours when he eventually admitted to a crime he
did not commit. Through his interrogation, Crow showed signs of distress. When Crow would
say that he had a feeling he killed his sister the interrogator went along with what Crow said and
tried to get an even greater confession out of him by being coercive and confrontational. As the
interrogation progressed Crow s level of distress became greater. Crow was going back and forth
between whether he murdered his sister or not. At

Effects Of Relocation On The Social Development
The Effect of Relocation on the Social Development of Adolescents in the United States
Ziyi Liu
Vanderbilt University
The Effect of Relocation on the Social Development of Adolescents in the United States Moving
and relocation is a fairly universal experience for those in the United States and in similarly
developed societies. According to the United States Census Bureau, an average adult moves
approximately 11.7 times in their lifetime, making relocation an important factor to analyze when
looking at the general population. Movement is also common among adolescents as they follow
their families in relocation experiences. As a result, understanding the topic of relocation
becomes important in providing context to the greater issue of adolescent development. The
primary question of the paper is to ask what the effects of relocation are on the development of
social skills of adolescents. While frequent relocation in adolescents may not be the norm, it is
certainly also not a rare experience and although specific data is hard do pinpoint due to
limitations in survey (census) data, it is important to look at how the relocation experience can
change an adolescent s experience and provide further topics for analysis. There is a variety of
research that looks at the effects of relocation on adolescents. The literature suggests that those who
relocate frequently are different from their non mobile peers in their relationships in stress,
psychological health, rates of

Have you ever heard of the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Jitterbug, or Charleston? If so, you already know
a little about dance in the Roaring Twenties, and how big of an impact it made on American culture

The Brazilian Samba began in Paris and spread to America in the early twenties. The older, more
conservative crowd stuck with ballroom dance as the young, eccentric generation began to emerge
in what many called animal dance. Dance styles like the famed Charleston and the Lindy Hop
(a.k.a the Jitterbug), formed from a blend of ballroom and African American influence. The Lindy
Hop later emerged into many different styles of swing dance and carried on for generations to
follow. To many, dance became a competitive sport. Nightclubs and community centers held dance
marathons for those who believed they could hold their own on the dance floor. Dance brought
people together in an unspoken, electrifying way unlike anything else before. As music influenced
the dance phenomena, dance began to influence popular music as well. Numerous songs and
genres were developed off of names of dances and choreography. It was completely changing the

Gender Roles in Australian Contemporary Society
Gender roles within Australian contemporary Australian Society.
Women produce children; women are mothers and wives; women do the cooking, cleaning, sewing
and washing; they take care of men and are subordinate to male authority; they are largely excluded
from high status occupations and from positions of power. (Haralambous and Holborn 1995,
Sociology Themes and Perspectives, HarperCollins Publishers) These stereotypes have come from
our past and have now become quite frequently used in today s society. Women have been seen as
the maintainers of the household while the men go out to work and earn a living. When our ancient

The Honor Tug Of War
The Honor Tug of War In The First Part of King Henry IV, Shakespeare integrates the concept of
honor throughout the whole play. Honor is often thought of as a symbol that signifies approval or
distinction, but it is how one embodies this honor that varies in the play. Certain characters are so
fixated with honor that they forget about the other aspects of their life, in direct contrast other
characters have no belief in honor and only care about self preservation. Shakespeare uses
characters like this to illustrate how the positive traits can be contained in one man who embodies
the truest form of honor, this being Prince Hal. By comparing Hotspur and Falstaff s opposing
views of honor, Shakespeare exposes that the Prince has the beneficial traits of the two, therefore
making him the symbol of rational and noble honor. The balladA lamentable Ditty composed upon
the Death of Robert Lord Devereux, late Earle of Essex, who was be headed in the Tower of
London, on Ashwenesday in the morning, 1600.To the tune of Welladay illustrates how honor
was viewed in the Renaissance through the story telling of a recently passed on Lord. The fourth
stanza of the ballad explains how Robert Lord Devereux achieved his honor on the battlefield by
stating All men that is and was, / evermore still: / One day as it was soone, / in honourof our
Queene, / Such deeds hath nere bin seene, / as he did doe. (Pepys 27 32). This quote demonstrates
that Devereux completed tasks on the battlefield

Edward Cornwallis Statue Analysis
There is no doubt that Edward Cornwallis statue has certain significance. Although the statue
has been around for nearly 100 years, it is still intact. The statue of Cornwallis was created by
the Scottish sculptor J. Massey Rhind and was unveiled at its eponymous park on June 22,
1931. It was considered the 182nd anniversary of Cornwallis s arrival and watched as the natal
day. (Announcement, 1931) The statue looks attentively to forward, wears a cloak, left hand
clenches commanding sword, right hand holds a cocked hat, bronze figures throughout the
mottled with grooves, eyes reveal that strong ambition and tenacity of one generation leader. The
statue has a straight body, burly back symbolize the courage of Cornwallis and the magnificent
imperialism. The statue is located at center of Cornwallis Park, the fields were lush with grass
and flowers, and tall trees are in order, cluster of dandelion open in the thick grass, the birds
singing on the branch, a group of pigeons were pecking at the crumbs that people spilled on the
ground. Many tourists who drove to Halifaxwere watching the park and the statue through the
window, and they often use the camera to record here. Five clean paths were staggered between
the bright meadows in the park. Some of the entertainment devices such as swings and slides are
built in the park for children to play and exercise. There are often many old people enjoying the
afternoon sun in long deckchairs. It is hard to imagine that there is a lot of

Los Angeles Riots Of 1992 Essay
It was the evening of August 9th 2014, when a small town erupted in a state of chaos. St. Louis
County, Missouri was in a state of emergency as social riots spread. Belligerent men and women of
all ages, storm around town, destroying all that they can put their hands on. Private businesses are
burnt down and the windows of parked vehicles are shattered. Hateful slurs are graffitied around
town, with sayings like, fuck the police, and the only good cop is a dead cop. Rocks are thrown
and police officers use tear gas to control the growing crowd. Concerned locals lock themselves in
their homes hoping for the craziness to die down. In what seems to be a twisted dream, society as
we know it, has turned into a battle field.
A riot can be defined as the violent disturbance of society s peace, it is also known as the violent
version of a protest. Riots are often referred to as urban riots, due to most riots being in cities
filled with poverty. In the midst of an urban riot, you will likely see public buildings being

The Los Angeles Riots of 1992 was a public outcry after 26 year old African American, Rodney
King, was severely beaten by white police officers. Four policemen were caught on surveillance,
beating Rodney King after a high speed police pursuit. The police officers were eventually
acquitted of their crimes, initiating a violent protest. Outraged civilians destroyed public property
and physically assaulted innocent bystanders. The actions that took place in Los Angeles shocked
the world. Referring back to the definition of a riot, African Americans across the country felt
betrayed by the justice system. It was assumed that the troopers would be charged for assault,
especially since it was caught on film. When justice was not served, violence erupted in an attempt
to gain a reaction from higher authority

Ayn Rand s The Fountainhead And Atlas Shrugged
Ayn Rand was a novelist. She was born in Russia, but didn t like the way society worked there,
so she packed her bags and moved to the States, New York to be exact. She is a widely known
author of many books. Anthem was just one of her creation, others named The Fountainhead
and Atlas Shrugged. Anthem has multiple rules and controls which are in place to cut down on
crime, also have an controlled society, and lastly to make sure that nobody looks like an outcast.
First, the rules are in place so that it cuts down crime. Having everyone follow the rules will keep
the crime rates low. Having a lot of laws in place will make it that everyone will act like each
other. Crimes are going to happen in every society, but in this novel, the crimes are lower, because
there are so many rules to prevent crimes that could later occur. Also in this society, there are
punishments, like every society. In Anthem the punishments are more extreme than in a normal
society. The rules are way more strict than in our society. The crime rate in Anthem is lower than in
our society. The reason for that is that the laws that follow makes them act different than we would

World Trade Center Reflection
The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center changed American citizens lives forever. On
September 11, 2016 some people risked their lives to save others, others experienced the terror, and
many had to watch the tragedy unfold. This day brought American citizens together, when people
needed it the most.
Immediately, after the brutal attack every mode of transportation was closed and people were
trying to find a way out of Manhattan. Average people were stepping up to save the people that
were stranded. Most New Yorkers last thought would be to get on a boat, but people were now
packed on every square inch of surface possible. After, one of the boaters called out for all
available boats to come help evacuate citizens from lower Manhattan. There were more than one

  • 2. Critical Appraisal Of A Research Josiah Wilkes EHPS590 Critical Appraisal Word count = 2977 Critical Appraisal Byrne , C., (2012), Jeesis is alive! He is the King of Australia: segregated religious instruction, child identity and exclusion. British Journal of Religious Education. 34 (3) pp. 317 331. This paper outlines a critical appraisal for a research paper conducted by Cathy Byrne (2012). Byrnes paper is an exploratory case study into the impact of segregated religious instruction in public schools. She argues that segregated religious instruction influences identity development and may lead to exclusionary behaviours in students. This essay argues that Byrnes use of an exploratory research design is an appropriate and useful approach as this method provides the researcher with a greater understanding of the topic and allows the researcher to gain clarity in defining the nature of the research problem (Manerika Manerika , 2014, p.95). It also helps Byrne define a problem statement for her future research. However, the nature of this approach is associated with significant limitations, which in Byrnes paper, were coupled with problems in the research title and method that affected the believability and validity of the study. There are also issues with the overall argument of the paper which is based on the assumption that Special Religious Education in Australian schools are segregated without defining segregation or adequately proving that grouping students by religious identity for religious ... • 3. Design Management Is Necessary For A Successful Project... Critical appraisal Design is the process whereby the attributes of a client are developed and documented so that they can be procured. It is very important stage in the design procurement process and has a major pressure on the outcome of the project. Lot of concentration is paid to overall project management, as evidenced by techniques developed over the last 15 years. This critical view examines the particular nature of design management process and the concrete issues that should to be considered in order to establish the felicitous controls. In recent years there has been an improved development for the need of design management in construction. Effective design management is necessary for a successful project but the clear picture of design management is not understood properly (S Austin, 2002). Design is a very key aspect of construction and with the help of a good team; good sustainable projects can be produced. The need for improvement of design in construction is very necessary. Delivering the project on time, budget and providing a value to construction is needed (S Austin, 2002). However the role of a design manager is poorly noted and does not have a robust path (Newton, n.d.). Design management Dates back to early times where it was influenced with number of different attributes like architecture, software development, engineering. During the 1960 design management was considered as managing design ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Star Wars Trilogy A directors cut, is a specified edit of a version of a film (or video game, music video, etc.) that is suppose to represent a vision closer to that of the director. In 2004, director George Lucas had an interview with Associated Press, and states that the Star Wars series only represented 25 or 30 per cent of what he wanted it to be. In the following paragraphs, I will show you how editing scenes differently can and will change the outlook of characters and the story of Star WarsIV: A New Hope. Finding out about Jabba the Hutt s appearance and likeness delivers a huge blow to character development. It takes the mystery out of finding out who this guy that is constantly being talked about. Ruining a plot mystery like this can ruin the surprise to endings of a story instead of letting it all unfold. Another change that happen between versions of Star Wars IV: A New Hope, is the various CGI added and changed though out the whole movie. Stormtroopers, explosions, and Alliance fighters are added, changed, and taken away in various scenes in the 1997 and 2011 versions of Star Wars IV: A New Hope; however, I m going to focus on the Death Star battle scene. The Death Star battle, or Battle of Yavin, is a climatic scene where the (first) Death Star, a giant moon shaped space station and weapon with abilities to destroy planets with its super laser, is destroyed by the Rebellion. This is actually Luke Skywalker s first step to becoming a Jedi by showing his leadership skills and his skill potential. However, at the end of the parable, only servant one and two had fulfilled their task. Servant three did not. Although Eliza s self worth was not determined by her standing in life she realized that she deserved more, she respected herself enough to know that Higgins was not the kind of man she would want a relationship with. I used to sit at home on my PlayStation 2 playing MLB the show. My baseball idols are Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, Jackie Robinson, Sammy Sosa, and Alfonso Soriano. I used to play catch all the time with my cousin Tristan. As we got older I was able to join a baseballteam with Tristan, and we made it onto the same team. The team was called Optic. What made Optic the best was our pitching, to be honest my pitching. We were the best team in our league; we only ever lost to one team the Bulldogs. They were the undefeated team in our league. Down goes the pitch, moving at lighting speed! STRIKE! As the batter steps up for his second plate appearance, he has three balls and two strikes. Both works, albeit more so the Iliad than the Odyssey, serve as the chief source of information about a pivotal event in Greek history: the Trojan War. Whether this war happened exactly as it has been narrated is subject to debate, as any answer holds very little evidence to be supported. However, the Greeks saw the Trojan War as the first time there was unity within their culture as they all fought for a common goal. As such, many regarded the Trojan war as an important event in defining the central values and virtues of Greek culture; they would revisit these epics time and time ... • 12. Rhetorical Analysis Of Pearl Harbor Speech Hours after Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan, gaining worldwide headlines, giving millions unanswered questions, the speech, Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation was given one day after the event. On December 8th 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech to be remembered today, by using rhetorical devices and figurative language to strongly picture his message to the public, making great use of parallel structure, personification, parallelism, and climax ordering to enforce his key point of wanting Americans to stand up against the Japanese forces for the deliberate actions done towards there peaceful country, with no threat or hint of war or of an armed attack. With hopes of gathering support for the decision to declare war on Japan. Personification is commonly used throughout the speech, Pearl Harbor Address, that was given to the nation by President D. Roosevelt. First off, seen in the very beginning of the speech, a date which will live in infamy, is an effective use of personification. Obviously a date can t live in infamy which makes it personification, he uses it to draw more attention to the date. Later in the speech, Roosevelt says, The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. Roosevelt uses personification here by saying that facts are speaking, allowing them to further stand out. The first quote works by describing the day of tragedy to forever be remembered as infamy, readers and listeners are more aware of the destruction done. Making it seem like their is nothing that they can now do but go to war with Japan. The second quote works by drawing attention to the facts, in hope of the facts angering the people in order to convince them to his side. Later, throughout the speech Roosevelt effectively uses parallelism to try and get more people to support him. To begin, towards the end of the speech Roosevelt states, There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger. , Roosevelt starts the sentence with a metaphor, but continues to use the phrase, our, saying, our people, our territory, and our interests, creating attention for what he is about to say next, witch is what makes this quote parallelism. Artemisia In The Last Painting Lucretia realism shown in the groin wrinkle, the crow s feet wrinkles at the right armpit, the lines in her neck, the pendant breasts, and the recognizably feminine abdomen (Image 200). Even so, Artemisia depicts the female form as more muscular and toned than the female bodies seen in most contemporaneous works by male artists. Though Susanna is seated, she is resisting the advances of the elders, and a cry is coming from her open mouth illustrating her alarm. Her shame of being naked in front of the elders is palpable in her downcast eyes and the flush on her cheeks. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lucretia is about to kill herself to spare her family the dishonor of her rape. Artemisia portrays Lucretia as a common woman rather than an idealized figure from classical antiquity. Lucretia s physical flaws and emotional vulnerability are apparent. The influence of Caravaggio is now obvious in Artemisia s work through the close focused composition of the singular figure, Lucretia, emerging from a dark background, harshly illuminated in typical tenebrist manner that creates a dramatic impact as Artemisia halts Lucretia s hand in action grasping the dagger, blade upward and not aimed directly at her breast, while her other hand clutches her breast in a moment of conflict as she struggles for the courage to complete the act (Garrard, Image 115). Also, as typical of Caravaggio, Artemisia portrays a single moment of narrative with a heightened sense of suspense and drama (Mann, 100). Artemisia depicts Lucretia seated in a contrapposto or counter pose and Lucretia s leg forms the base of a conventional Renaissance pyramid with her head at its apex. In art, contrapposto describes a figure that stands (or in this case sits) with one leg holding the full weight of the body, while the other leg is relaxed. He spoke on July 5, 1852, in Rochester, New York. His speech was called The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro . Reading the speech made me feel dumbfounded, amused and frustrated The Fourth of July is America s independence day from Britain. However, slaves remained in the same position until after the civil war. This is the reason why Douglass says and believes This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn. To drag a man in fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and call upon him to join you in joyous anthems, were inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony. I m left both speechless and amused on how true this statement is. Americans expected everyone to celebrate their day with them. While remaining hypocrites having once slaves and now segregation within their free and fair nation. No one should expect respect or happiness from people Americana has hurt. This new amendment to the Civil Acts, broke down the barriers for women, and demanded proportionality between men s and women s athletic programs. Due to the way of society 35 years ago, Title Nine was necessary for women to receive equal rights in educational sports. Title Nine, an act passed in 1972, prohibits discrimination in all areas of educationand provides equality for both men and women in education systems. However, Title Nine is most importantly known for its athletic achievements and endeavors. This federal law, in regards to educational athletic programs, states that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance , according to the Forum of Public Policy. • 16. William Shakespeare s Othello ENG 1001: Nothing is funnier than unhappiness, I grant you that. Yes, yes, it s the most comical thing in the world (Samuel Beckett). Wilde, Shakespeare and Beckett incorporate two genres in their plays that nursed a strong intrigue interest (Jones, pg 26) comedy and tragedy. According to Aristotle in his Poetics, tragedyin a play is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete and of a certain magnitude composed of plot, character, thought, diction, melody and spectacle, (Myers, pg 118). Conventionally, comedies end happily in which real world conflicts are resolved. In this essay I am going to demonstrate how each of the playwrights challenge the traditional ideology of comedy and tragedy. Comical elements in Othello are limited, however a neoclassical critic stated, there is in this play, some burlesque, some humour and a ramble of comical wit and therefore, Othello as a whole is none other than a Bloody Farce (Rymer). To an extent I agree with this comment, however Othello is evidently more tragic than comical. The distasteful comedy based on racial stereotypes further delineates a tragic response to the play, Awake/...or else the devil will make a grandsire of you (I.I.90 91). The verb potirara means to drink which plays off the word Pater. (Polt, Christopher 233). The connection between potirara and Patera had an influence on how the audience had looked at King Pterelas, he was portrayed as a drunk (Polt, Christopher 233). Pterelas was not a king who merely drank, but one who drank continuously (Polt, Christopher 233). King Pterelas was not the first to use the Patera as a prop. • 28. Analysis Of Lark And Termite By Jayne Anne Phillips In Lark and Termite, Jayne Anne Phillips advances a distorted conception of time that deliberately confuses the boundary between past and present. The novel relays the narratives of a set of interrelated characters, one of which takes place in Korea in 1950 and the rest of which occur in Winfield, West Virginia in 1959. While these narratives are set apart from one another textually, Phillips distorts their temporal and spatial relationship to one another throughout the novel by drawing parallels between characters and events from the past and present, Korea and the United States. Through this conception of time, as well as her use of spectral figures, she creates a representation of the haunting effects of war on the next generation the ways in which it literally shapes both individuals and families. Termite himself is curiously positioned within this distorted time space dynamic, making him both a symbol of transgenerational trauma and a figure of existential liminality. The interweavement of past and present and this portrayal of a liminally positioned Termite ultimately create a unique setting, a particular distortion of time and place, for the confrontation of trauma and the victims movement into release. Portraying the area as one that has seen better days, Capote writes about the old stucco structure that no longer holds dances, the crumbling post office, and the bank that now fails to serve its original purpose. Combining visual imagery with hints of desolation, Capote attempts to reveal the gray and boring nature of the town through its appearance. He does not, however, rely only on visual details; in describing the local accent as barbed with a prairie twang, he uses both auditory and visual appeal to make one imagine a ranch hand s tone of voice and pattern of speech as he describes the events of his farming days. The hard blue skies and desert clear air contribute to a feeling of emptiness, an emotional vacancy that seems omnipresent in the small town. Finally, even the steep and swollen grain elevators that represent the town s prosperity are seen in a solemn and mysterious light, as Capote makes certain to mention that the townspeople camouflage this abundance without explaining why they choose to do so. The results of the battle had unforeseen effects on Athens and the future of Western Civilization. The Greek Golden Age , centred in Athens, brought about new forms of art, the foundations of future philosophy and redirected literature and drama. The achievements of the Athenians during this period were directly connected to the inspiration and prestige (which later translated into power) fuelled by the events at Marathon. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The victory at Marathon and the successful defence of the city, gave the Athenians a sense of moral superiority and pride. In later battles of the Persian War, at Thermopylai and Salamis, the highly regarded Spartans and those of the Peloponnese were largely in control of strategic moves. Although still a major force in every battle, Athens and her allies were outnumbered and thus followed Spartan command. After the second occupation of Athens after the battle of Salamis, the Athenians gave Sparta an ultimatum due to a lack of Spartan support. If the Peloponnesians wanted Athens navy, they must save Athens land. Because the Athenians had more damage to recover from it brought stronger confidence and overall pride for them once the city got back on its feet. The Spartans, Corinthians and other Peloponnesian allies now had reason to fear Athens growing naval power and its capabilities now that the city was repaired and invigorated with a renewed sense of pride. This is the point that we see the beginnings of a shift in the balance of power and influence between the city states. When the Ionian states adopted the Athenians as leaders, as opposed to the Spartans who had been pre eminent for a long time, the rise of the Athenian influence began to show. For the purpose of protecting all Greeks from a further Persian attack, a league was formed, of which Athens was now the leader. The league included ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. The Honor Tug Of War The Honor Tug of War In The First Part of King Henry IV, Shakespeare integrates the concept of honor throughout the whole play. Honor is often thought of as a symbol that signifies approval or distinction, but it is how one embodies this honor that varies in the play. Certain characters are so fixated with honor that they forget about the other aspects of their life, in direct contrast other characters have no belief in honor and only care about self preservation. Shakespeare uses characters like this to illustrate how the positive traits can be contained in one man who embodies the truest form of honor, this being Prince Hal. By comparing Hotspur and Falstaff s opposing views of honor, Shakespeare exposes that the Prince has the beneficial traits of the two, therefore making him the symbol of rational and noble honor. The balladA lamentable Ditty composed upon the Death of Robert Lord Devereux, late Earle of Essex, who was be headed in the Tower of London, on Ashwenesday in the morning, 1600.To the tune of Welladay illustrates how honor was viewed in the Renaissance through the story telling of a recently passed on Lord.
