Mount Vernon can be clearly seen in the great number of services and shelters
available to people in crisis situations. One of the services offered is the Winter
Sanctuary, an emergency homeless shelterin Mount Vernon that provides the
homeless with a place to stay during the frigid winter months. I spent two hours

s faces, which looked worn and calloused from the cold. The women were wearing

become her own person. Jing Mei is the only daughter of two Chinese immigrants
in America. Her mother places an exponential amount of pressure on Jing Mei, to

The objective of this experiment was to determine the role of various chemicals in a
reaction, to determine how concentration affects the rate of the reaction, and to
determine how temperature affects the rate of the reaction. Both concentration and
temperature greatly affect the rate at which the reaction occurred, and changing the
concentrations of the reactants or the temperature at which the reaction occurred
changed how quickly the reaction took place.

The reactants provided for this experiment were hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium
thiosulfate (Na2S2O3), 0.0435 M potassium iodide (KI), 0.072 M acetic acid
(CH3CO2H), and 0.072M sodium acetate (CH3CO2Na). A starch of 0.05% was
also provided, which served as the indicator for the experiment. The hydrogen
peroxide was manufactured by Rite Aid, the starch was manufactured by Acros
Organics, and all of the other chemicals were manufactured by Fisher Scientific.
Ten mL of each reactant were added to their own beakers, labelled with the
reactant, so that it was known exactly what was in each beaker. A pipette was
placed into each beaker in order to avoid cross contamination. A beaker was also
prepared with distilled water and another pipette. Two 10 mL graduated cylinders
were used to measure out the reactants throughout the various trials in order to
ensure that the volume was noted. A hot plate was used during the temperature
trials, as was a large beaker full of ice, which served as an ice bath for a smaller
