negative.
Theory and Background: Gram positive and Gram negative represents whether a cell wall retains
the primary dye color in the staining process after decolorization. The difference in the structure of
the cell wall determine if this happens.
In Gram positive cells the walls are much thicker than Gram negative. Gram positive cell walls
consist of several layers of peptidoglycan and groups of molecules called teichoic acids. The
teichoic acids line up perpendicular to the many layers of peptidoglycan. Gram negative cells
walls have only one layer of peptidoglycan surrounded by an outer membrane. The outer membrane
has porins, or proteins that act like pores and allow the diffusion of molecules. The outer

A Student At Hampton University
I wish I could say it still surprises me when I mentioned to people that I attended an HBCU
(Historically Black College/University), some of them have no idea they exist. Often, it turns into
a conversation starter, which usually evolves into a meaningful educational moment about the
history of HBCU s. However, occasionally I find myself becoming frustrated when ask the
question why in a way that questions the validity and or need for HBCU s in 2016. As a student
at Hampton University I did not fully realize the impact it would have on me, but looking back, it
is clear to me that those experiences have shaped who I ve grown into today, and strongly influence
to my desire to pursue a career in environmental science education.
My first class in Marine and Environmental Science department at Hampton University turned out
be different than I expected. Instead of a large lecture hall full of students, I entered a small

the citizens of the Machine era pridefully declare their society as advanced in comparison to
before the dawn of civilization (Forster 10). They credit the Machine for their advancements as
they view the pre Machine era as inadequate and degenerate. Ironically, their pride is misplaced as
the people of the Machine era are not advanced. The people who built the Machine were advanced,
innovative, and knowledgeable, but when the people of the Machine era forgot that humans are the
ones who gave the Machine life and thus have the power to control it, they stagnated their own
progress and allowed themselves to become disconnected. Their false proclamation demonstrates
the irony of humanity s tendency to worship man made creations as bigger and more powerful than
the men who gave the machines life revealing a loss of worth in human intelligence and identity.
Due to the belief that humans are inadequate in comparison to the god like Machine, the citizens of
the Machine era would rather live in isolation and what they perceive as comfort rather than build

What personality traits do we display with our actions? Our personalities are shaped by our life
experiences and the people around us. They re shaped by our upbringing, the way our parents
treated us and the many thing we learned from them. They re shaped by our past experiences
whether a being on the receiving end of a kind deed by another person, or the receiving end of a
gross injustice. These experiences shape our personalities and in turn shape how we view the
world and treat those around us. John Cheever s The Five Forty Eight is the story about a
woman trying to put herself back together after being broken, albeit in a slightly questionable
way. Miss Dent is a woman who previously spent 8 months in a hospital, and is still clearly a bit
unhinged. She is a fragile woman who becomes attached to Mr. Blake after he hires her as his
secretary. Mr. Blake sees how vulnerable she is and takes advantage of her, afterwards having
an employee fire her and keep her from seeing him. Months later Miss Dent stalks Mr. Blake,
cornering him on the Five Forty Eight. Mr. Blake is terrified, but Miss Dent claims she will not
kill him as long as he listens to her. After Miss Dent has made him feel the way he made her, she
leaves him on the platform; weeping as he made her, but unharmed. Many aspects of Mr. Blake s
personality are displayed throughout the story as we observe his thoughts and the way he treats
