SHORT CIRCUIT MONITORING BY
USING PLC & SCADA

MAIN OBJECTIVE
 Now a days, if power failure is occurred by means
of any short circuit in transmission line, the line
man has to inspect the entire network from the
transformer to the tail end.
 This traditional method of detecting fault takes
more time and it may cause risk to the line man in
some abnormal situations (like in rainy session).
We found solution for this real time issue by means
of our paper called “PLC” which indicates the
sequence of the fault occurred in a SCADA.
WORKING METHODOLOGY
 HV Transmission lines are the Major part of the
electrical distribution system, as they provide the
path to transfer power between generation and
load.
 Transmission lines operate at voltage levels from
69kV to 765kV, and are ideally tightly
interconnected for reliable operation.
 Transmission protection systems are designed
to identify the location of faults and isolate only
the faulted section by the help of PLC.
 The key challenge to the transmission
protection lines in reliably detecting and
isolating faults compromising the security of
the system.

IMPLEMENTATION OF PLC
 We developing this logic program by
using ladder diagram method in PLC
(RS logix 500) software.
 If any short circuit occurred in
transmission lines automatically current
rating will be increased.
 This high current rating will be sensed by
the sensor and gives as input to the PLC.
 After receiving input signal as per
Ladder logic program the plc produce the
output signal to the substation through
Alarm
IMPLEMENTATION OF SCADA
 SCADA stands for Supervisory
Control And Data Acquisition.
 Which is playing a vital role on
supervisory level & it’s a purely
software package .
 It is interfaced between the PLC via
Programmable Logic Controllers
(PLC's), or other commercial
hardware modules.
 By using scada the user can identify the faulted tower
number & area.
 It will use to rectify the problem easily.
CONCLUSION
 The main scope of this paper is to detect the exact
position of the fault occurred in the overhead HV
power transmission line by PLC in a sequential
manner and to display in SCADA.
 To provide an uninterrupted power supply and
short circuit protection in transmission lines.
 Thus by using this system,we serve the power
efficiently to the people

Short circuit monitoring by using PLC & SCADA

  • 1. SHORT CIRCUIT MONITORING BY USING PLC & SCADA M.RAGUL BHAVAN, EEE DEPARTMENT, KNOWLEDGE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KAKAPALAYAM , SALEM (DT)
  • 2. MAIN OBJECTIVE  Now a days, if power failure is occurred by means of any short circuit in transmission line, the line man has to inspect the entire network from the transformer to the tail end.  This traditional method of detecting fault takes more time and it may cause risk to the line man in some abnormal situations (like in rainy session). We found solution for this real time issue by means of our paper called “PLC” which indicates the sequence of the fault occurred in a SCADA.
  • 3. WORKING METHODOLOGY  HV Transmission lines are the Major part of the electrical distribution system, as they provide the path to transfer power between generation and load.  Transmission lines operate at voltage levels from 69kV to 765kV, and are ideally tightly interconnected for reliable operation.
  • 4.  Transmission protection systems are designed to identify the location of faults and isolate only the faulted section by the help of PLC.  The key challenge to the transmission protection lines in reliably detecting and isolating faults compromising the security of the system.
  • 5. LAYOUT OF HV TRANSMISSION LINES CT PLC programmable logic Controller ALARM SCADA (MONITOR)
  • 6. IMPLEMENTATION OF PLC  We developing this logic program by using ladder diagram method in PLC (RS logix 500) software.
  • 7.  If any short circuit occurred in transmission lines automatically current rating will be increased.  This high current rating will be sensed by the sensor and gives as input to the PLC.  After receiving input signal as per Ladder logic program the plc produce the output signal to the substation through Alarm

  • 9. IMPLEMENTATION OF SCADA  SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition.  Which is playing a vital role on supervisory level & it’s a purely software package .  It is interfaced between the PLC via Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's), or other commercial hardware modules.
  • 10.  By using scada the user can identify the faulted tower number & area.  It will use to rectify the problem easily.
  • 11. CONCLUSION  The main scope of this paper is to detect the exact position of the fault occurred in the overhead HV power transmission line by PLC in a sequential manner and to display in SCADA.  To provide an uninterrupted power supply and short circuit protection in transmission lines.  Thus by using this system,we serve the power efficiently to the people
