Shrimp Farming
Shrimp farming in India, till 2009, was synonymous with the mono culture of tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon. About 1,90,000 ha brackishwater area have been developed for shrimp culture in the country spread over all the coastal states. Since 1995 culture of P monodon is affected by White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and the development of shrimp farming has become stagnant.
Most of the Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia were also culturing P. monodon and since 2001-02 onwards most of them have shifted to culture of exotic Whiteleg shrimp,Litopenaeus vannamei because of the availability of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) and Specific Pathogen Resistant (SPR) broodstock. In India, Pilot-scale introduction of L.vannamei was initiated in 2003 and after a risk analysis study large-scale introduction has been permitted in 2009.

This presentation summarizes a thesis on the length weight relationship, condition factor, and fecundity estimation of Mystus Vittatus fish in Bangladesh. Over 700 fish samples were collected from various markets and measurements were taken for total length, standard length, weight, egg weight, and number. Statistical analyses found positive linear relationships between length and weight, and between fecundity and length, weight, and gonad weight. Why are sharks so important? • Sharks are important because they are the top predator in the ocean • Why does that matter? – Sharks regulate the quantity and health of other marine life, helping to keep fish stocks in the ocean healthy. They tend to feed on weak, old and unhealthy fish, which stops the spread of disease among fish populations. – When the apex predator is made fewer it is called “top down effect” – Why and how are sharks being killed?

(Glue your sheet into your notebook) Vocabulary Group- Write each vocabulary word or definition on the shark cut-out (use the info sheet as your guide). Cut out and glue the sharks in to your science notebook Craftivity/Game/Experiment- Play the game “Bites and Pieces”. If game is completed you can play again or you can use the guide to practice drawing sharks in your notebook. Science Literature- Use the books about sharks and write a shark fact in each of the bubbles. Put them in a stack and staple the top of the stack in your notebook.
