Dear friends and colleagues,
With pride, I welcome you to Matters Academy’s booklet, "Why The Ocean Matters".
Hong Kong and our surrounding seas have provided us with a livelihood for generations. We have achieved international importance because of our relationship with the ocean. Our Fragrant Harbour and our bond to the Greater Bay Area are home to more than 30 million people and play an ever-expanding role in global development.
We rely on the oceans for food, transportation, and recreation. And yet, our oceans are under substantial threat. How can we not put our concern on the ocean and our future?
World Ocean Day is upcoming on 8 June. We take this opportunity to commemorate World Ocean Day by this booklet sharing the work of ten leading individuals and their organizations affecting ocean change in Southeast Asia.
We celebrate and dive into the work of Ocean Warriors, Thailand Manta Project, saving corals in the Philippines, OceansAsia, the Shark Foundation, Conservation of Green Sea Turtles, Bloom Association in HK, and CITES Enforcement.
We also provide the latest insights on underwater ecology: how do fish feel? What do they know? the benefits of the ocean ecosystem, fish stock depletion, and coral reef ecology.
Lastly, let's work toward the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 14, Life Below Water, to embark on our journey echoing "Why The Ocean Matters".
Welcome.
Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems held together by calcium carbonate structures secreted by corals. Coral reefs are built by colonies of tiny animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, which in turn consist of polyps that cluster in groups.
Coral reef Threats, conservation and Restoration.pptxVIRENDRA KUMAR
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. About 25% of the ocean's fish depend on healthy coral reefs. Unfortunately, coral reef ecosystems are severely threatened. Some threats are natural, such as diseases, predators, and storms. Other threats are caused by people, including pollution, sedimentation, unsustainable fishing practices, and climate change, which is raising ocean temperatures and causing ocean acidification. Saving and restoring the world's coral reefs requires a multi-pronged approach that ranges from the local to the global level.
Wilford School and Experience Marine Reserves wanted to monitor how much rubbish enters the oceans via the stormdrains. By installing LittaTraps in two stormdrains, they stopped 2680 pieces of rubbish entering our oceans!

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Interesting facts in Nusa
Dua Beach
• Nusa Dua beach has a great tourist attraction. A lot of
tourist come to the Nusa Dua Beach because in that
area there is a lot of entertainment and the beach is very
beautiful. The weather is good too so more tourist will
come. There is many options of food across the street
and many markets and place to buy souvenirs.
3. Components of Nusa Dua
Beach
• The components in the Nusa Dua Beach is the non-living
things and living things in that place. The living thing
needs the non living things to survive and the examples
of the living things or biotic and non living things or
abiotic is in the next slide.
4. Components of the
ecosystem(Biotic)

10. Interdependence in the
ecosystem means that….
• Interdependence in the ocean ecosystem means that an
living thing depends on something to live and survive. It
could be symbiotic relationship so for example they
could get shelter, protection or food.
11. Symbiotic Relationship
Isopods and fish
• The isopods is a parasite that
eats the fish’s tongue and
getting the first bite of
everything the fish consumes.
This relationship is called
parasitism because the isopod
gets a benefit but the fish gets
a negative impact.
12. Symbiotic Relationship
Remora fish(sucker fish) and manta ray
• Remoras are known as the suckerfish. They
attach themselves to many different types of
species, like dugongs, sharks, sea turtles, and
manta rays. The remora uses its host for
protection, transportation, and scraps from the
larger predator’s meals. The Relationship
between remora fish and manta ray is
mutualism because both of them gets a benefit.
The parasite gets a meal from the manta ray
and the manta ray gets cleaned by the sucker
fish from bacteria and dirts.
13. Interdependence Between
Humans and Living Things
• The interdependence happen is between fisherman and
fish. The fisherman need fish to survive because without
fish they can’t get any money and if they don’t get any
money they can starve.
14. Interdependence between
Humans and Non-Living Thing
• The interdependence between humans and non living
things is between people that make salt and salt water.
The people that make salt need salt water to make salt
and they can sell it to restaurants so they can get money.
Another example is between someone that sells
seashells and the seashell on the beach. Many people in
Bali sells painted and decorated seashells in the market
and the people that sells seashells need the sea shell to
survive because they need money and by selling they
can get money for food and other stuffs they need for
living.
15. Problems Happen
Over fishing and destructive method of fishing
• Some people were overfishing and the reason is the
more fish the money the fisherman gets. Some people
also use destructive method such as using
bombs, bottom trawling which destroys sea floor habitat
and scoops up many unwanted fish and animals. This
problem has a serious impact to the ocean ecosystem
because fish are interdependent to other animals and it
may cause the predator starve and other animals that
eat fish too.
16. Problems Happen
Pollution
• Some people are littering in the beach so the Bali sea
will be affected and the water will get polluted. There is
many tourist that come to Bali and some of the may
throw rubbish in the water. The polluted water can cause
the fish die.
17. Problems Happen
Busy Transportation
• There is a lot of tourist that go to Bali for holidays or vacation.
Many of the tourist have fun with jets skis, boats and
parceling. The boats can destroy the coral reefs because of
the propeller and the force that the propeller make. It can
destroy the plants, coral reefs and even kill the fish. Jet Ski
does not use propeller but it uses Jet system. The jet system
blow out really strong air so it can move the jets ski. The really
strong air can wipe out the plants and coral reef. People also
use yacht to travel from different island with really heavy loads
like truck and cars. The yacht have a really big and strong
propeller and it can destroy the ocean ecosystem and habitat.
18. Actions We Can Do
• We can reduce the use of plastics. So when we are in
the supermarket we can use a box or canvas bag
instead other than plastic bags. We can use it but we
need to recycle and try to not use too much. So for
example we don’t ask for separate plastic bags when we
are in the supermarket or other shopping places such as
malls. What if our Bali beach was as clean as the beach
in the background wallpaper?
19. Actions We Can Do
• We can tell info to our friends so that when they go to
Bali they can do the same action and help the ocean
ecosystem. They also can know how the system works
and all the important information about ocean ecosystem
in Bali.
20. Actions We Can Do
• Bali has the best seafood and it is in the Jimbaran
beach. We can help the ocean ecosystem by trying to
eat less seafood so there will be less fish consumed and
killed only for the seafood.
21. Best Action
• The Best Action that I choose is to present and tell this
power point and information to my friends so that they
can understand and they also can do the actions. They
also can know the impacts and the problems too.

Real Life Experience
• The last observation I did in Bali was in the last holiday on July 2014. I went to Nusa
Dua Beach and I saw a lot of trash floating in the beach. Especially when in low tide
