Emerging and Innovative Approaches in Photovoltaics
It’s time to reinforce and reshape R&D efforts to speed-up the PV business
NOW IS THE TIME FOR INNOVATION!
2012 - 2013 was a tough time for most PV manufacturers, as they faced difficulties due to strongly decreasing market prices resulting from an overcrowded market and high total manufacturing overcapacities. During this period the industry was focused on securing short-term sales, and there was little investment in new equipment and R&D activities.
But now the PV market is showing signs of renewed optimism. Investors are renewing their interest in PV start-up companies developing emerging PV technologies and applications. Equipment makers are finding new opportunities in equipment sales, either to increase production capacity in existing facilities or to build new ones. Big players, especially in China, are increasing their acquisition activities in order to secure a competitive advantage.
All of these developments open new opportunities for R&D funding, and the possibility to transfer R&D achievements into an industrial environment. At the same time, the increased performance and decreasing cost of PV components and systems will allow for new applications and wider use of PV technology for electricity generation.
PHOTOVOLTAICS: WHERE ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INNOVATION?
Although photovoltaics (PV) has reached a relatively high level of technological maturity, with many PV products commercially available today, strong efforts are underway to develop new solar cell technologies, to improve the performance of existing ones and to develop new applications for solar cells.
In this report, the PV industry’s main technology and market trends are presented, and the suitability of different PV technologies (crystalline silicon, CIGS, organic PV, etc.) for various applications is analyzed - with a focus on existing potential for further innovations.
For most conventional applications, where PV serves solely to generate electricity, it’s difficult to compete with continuously improving crystalline silicon technology, which dominates the PV market (>85% market share). Therefore, most developers of alternative PV technologies are focused on other PV functionalities (flexibility, color, low-light performance, indoor light performance, etc.) and on alternative application segments. Moreover, tandem and multijunction hybrid approaches, such as a multijunction solar cell, are also being studied.
The large number of process steps in PV product manufacturing provides great potential for innovative solutions: by avoiding, replacing, improving or adding process steps and materials used, a combination of many “small” improvements can lead to better performance and lower manufacturing costs.

Power Electronics for EV/HEV 2016: Market, Innovations and Trends - 2016 Repo...Yole Developpement
The power electronics market for EV/HEV will reach $13B by 2021. Technology and business developments, as well as business opportunities, are expected in this growing industry.
The automotive market is turning electric
Sales of battery electric cars doubled between 2014 and 2015, an occurrence considered the first sign of the widespread acceptance of electrified cars. Pushed by aggressive targets in terms of CO2 emissions, electrification is undoubtedly the “greenest” option for car makers, with “diesel-gate” strengthening this impression and improving the public’s opinion of electric cars. The offer for electric and hybrid cars is growing by leaps and bounds, with premium car makers like Aston Martin and Jaguar also involved, and established car makers like General Motors launching affordable electric vehicles with sufficient range to be competitive with gas-powered vehicles. Once seen as a fancy-yet-flawed technology, electric cars are now becoming attractive thanks to players like Tesla and the financial benefits of owning an electric vehicle. The development of a charging infrastructure and an increasing range have also helped boost the market.
Considering all of these advantages, along with the political push for the mass adoption of electric cars, the market could be even higher. However, in order for electrified cars to enjoy global appeal some obstacles still must be cleared, such as charging regulations and the high sticker price compared to ICE vehicles.
In this report, you will find a detailed analysis of electrification’s pros and cons, as well as updated market metrics and forecasts for electric cars (by electrification type) and associated power electronics (inverter, power module, and power device). Market insights are also provided for the batteries used in electrified vehicles.

The webinar mainly targets DSOs, and potential flexibility providers (VPPs, aggregators, flexible consumers), but it is also relevant to all other stakeholders with an interest in the topics of smart distribution grids, local flexibility services and aggregation. These includes, but is not limited to: regulators, academics and researchers on these topics, retailers, or software and data service providers.
Relying almost entirely on energy from variable renewable energy sources (vRES) will require a transformation in the way power systems are planned and operated. This webinar will present the report "Power System Strategic Flexibility Roadmap". This work outlines steps for overcoming the challenges in creating power systems with the flexibility needed to maintain system security and reliability while relying primarily on variable energy resources. The work is largely a synthesis of the many reports and studies on this subject. It seeks to summarize that body of work for a less technical audience that will need to put in place the policies, technical changes, and institutional systems necessary to make the power system of the future a reality. For this work we gathered opinions from a dedicated power system flexibility advisory panel, through two meetings, e- mail exchanges, and an online survey.

How demand for flexibility will develop in the German power systemLeonardo ENERGY
The Webinar presents the results of a research project on flexibility in the German power sector. It analyses the flexibility demand with a rising share of RES-E and compares different flexibility options.
The project consists of a model-based scenario analysis for 2020, 2030 and 2050 and applies the electricity system model PowerFlex together with a European network model to analyze import and export as a flexibility option.
Flexibility becomes an issue only in the scenario 2030 with 60 % RES-E. In 2020 additional flexibility can increase efficiency, but is not essential to run the system or to integrate RES-E.

Smart Neighborhoods speak EEBUS.
The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate how EEBUS enables an industrial approach for residential energy management by providing standardized device communication and energy management use cases. Hence, a lock-in into proprietary manufacturer specific communication can be avoided. This enables cost effective scalability, replication, and commissioning of energy management solutions at target markets.
EEBUS provides transparency and access to all energy relevant devices and thus transforms them into flexible resources for demand response. Single households become the core elements of Smart Neighborhoods and consequently of Smart Grids. The continuously evolving technology is open to further use cases and therefore facilitates the integration of other domains to the REnnovates technical platform – such as E-Mobility which is already managed through EEBUS or grid interaction.

Introduction to the Energy Efficiency DirectiveLeonardo ENERGY
The Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) was adopted in 2012 and is one of the EU’s four key Directives addressing energy efficiency in stationary (i.e. non transport) end-uses (the others being the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, The Ecodesign Directive and the Energy Labelling Directive). Given that the other Directives cover the energy performance of buildings and equipment the EED is designed to address energy savings opportunities that are not readily addressed by the other Directives. It has its origin in the preceding Energy Services Directive, which was repealed when the EED was adopted. The Energy Efficiency Directive establishes a set of binding measures intended to help the EU reach its 20% energy efficiency target by 2020. Under the Directive, all EU countries are required to use energy more efficiently at all stages of the energy chain from its production to its final consumption. EU countries were required to transpose the Directive's provisions into their national laws by 5 June 2014.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
