This document summarizes a roundtable event held by TransGrid on November 13, 2013 to discuss TransGrid's five year business plan and revenue proposal with key industry stakeholders. The workshop objectives were to share understanding of the changing energy market, TransGrid's response, provide awareness of the revenue setting process, and obtain feedback on TransGrid's planned revenue application and pricing methodology from attendees. T&D India (May 2018) - Village electrification A milestone not the destinationT&D India
The government’s recent announcement of 100 per cent village electrification was a T Tdevelopment of immense significance. What is interesting is that the achievement, which T T was communicated by the Prime Minister himself through a tweet, engendered much debate and discussion. For those uninitiated, it meant that all villages have been electrified. However, this development must be seen in the light of extant definitions—when is a village said to be “electrified” and, for that matter, what is a village. The import of this accomplishment is that all 5.97 lakh-odd villages, as defined in the Census, have at least ten per cent of their households equipped with an electricity connection. The source of electricity could be either the electric grid or standalone renewable energy sources.
In many ways, the electricity industry makes an unlikely candidate for disruption. Not much changed between the 1880s, when Thomas Edison began building power stations, and the start of the 21st century. Top business leaders rarely had to think about electricity. They got their electricity from the power plant, or the local utility, or the government, and had little say in how it was produced, delivered, or managed. Utility executives, for their part, could make and execute long-term plans with a great deal of security. Demand tended to rise along with the economy; natural monopolies were the norm.
No longer. Several coincident, significant transformations are causing a revolution in the way electricity — the vital fuel of global commerce and human comfort — is produced, distributed, stored, and marketed. A top-down, centralized system is devolving into one that is much more distributed and interactive. The mix of generation is shifting from high carbon to lower carbon, and, often, to no carbon. In many regions, the electricity business is transforming from a monopoly to a highly competitive arena.

That’s the million dollar question for many players in the energy industry at the moment.
T&D India (September 2016): Technology to the RescueT&D India
Underground high voltage cables are going be an important aspect of India’s power transmission and distribution sector in the coming years. India is expected to have at least 40 per cent of its population living in cities by 2030, according to studies. This will mean that power sub-transmission and distribution will get increasingly city-centric over the years. Overhead lines will be gradually replaced by underground extra high voltge (EHV) cables due to several advantages. Firstly, underground cables being invisible do not adversely affect aesthetics of the surroundings; there are fewer right-of-way concerns, and power theft becomes nearly impossible.
Apart from conventional T&D, it is likely that EHV cables will find application in new areas like offshore wind farms, whenever they become a reality in India.

New paradigm in EHV testing: The first phase of the National High Power Test Laboratory’s Bina testing centre is likely to start commercial operations in the near future. This will mark a new paradigm on the country’s high-voltage electrical equipment testing landscape. India has traditionally suffered deficiency with respect to testing of high-voltage equipment. When the country’s power sector focus shifted from generation to transmission, the need for high-voltage and extra high-voltage equipment surfaced. However, neither was there enough manufacturing capacity leading to dependence on imports, nor was the country equipped with testing facilities.

Many remote areas and islands (RAI) are deploying renewable energy (RE), some with ambitious plans to meet 100% of their electricity or even final energy needs with renewables. For most of them, roof-top PV systems offer clear advantages but most of their deployment potential still remains largely untapped. The setup of consistent prosumer policies can provide a means to achieve the islands’ objectives faster and with lower costs to society.
This report provides guidance to policy makers on the drivers, opportunities, challenges and implementation strategies of PV prosumer policies that can be considered within a comprehensive renewable energy strategy for RAI. It is based on the frameworks and methodologies developed on the IEA-RETD publications RE-PROSUMERS (2014) and REMOTE (2012).
The preliminary results were presented at the IRENA Island conference in Martinique in July 2015, see presentation slides.

As we are shifting from centralised energy generation to decentralised energy systems, the structures of energy markets are changing and Community Energy is emerging as a major player in the future of Australia's Energy landscape. The conference provided a key opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities for renewable community power projects.
The Community Energy Conference brought together community representatives, corporate energy stakeholders, project organisations, government representatives, property developers, community owned retailers, engineers and potential investors to showcase latest project developments and discussed advances and barriers.
The agenda covered key topics such as local participation, finance & investment, regulation and policies, utility models and microgrid, system design and network changes, power contracts, renewable energy integration and infrastructure.
Greg Garvin, Executive General Manager, People, Strategy & Stakeholders at TransGrid gave a presentation on the topic ‘Grid innovation: pathways top a low carbon future’. In the presentation Greg covered what grid of the future might look like, the active role TransGrid is taking to shape the grid of the future, and highlight some of our activities that demonstrate being proactive including iDemand, Renewable Energy Hub and the R&D project to digitise secondary systems.
