The surface coat of nematodes lies external to the outermost epicuticle layer and is composed of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. It appears fuzzy and is called the glycocalyx. The glycocalyx is synthesized by hypodermal and gland cells, and its thickness varies between nematode species and life stages. It plays an important role in helping nematodes encounter environmental challenges as parasites of plants, animals, and insects.
