The Negative Effects Of Gentrification
Gentrification, a very controversial topic that has just recently been brought to the surface in the past
few years, is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle
class taste ( Gentrification ). The two central arguments behind gentrification reflect its deeply
political controversy. One side of the political spectrum argues that gentrification decreases the rate of
crime and increases a neighborhood s value, while the other side argues that gentrification is a form of
institutionalized racism that replaces low income families and dramatically increases rates of
homelessness. The negative effects of this issue could not be anymore clear. In major cities like
Boston, the cost of living has skyrocketed just in the last five years. This process of removing housing
districts to increase the neighborhood s value is negatively affecting low income families, primarily
people of color, while wealthy middle to upper class white families are positively benefiting from it.
Gentrification is interfering with the diversity and economy of many urban areas and historically low
income neighborhoods. There is a very high displacement rate in the United States, particularly in
states like Massachusetts and New York due to gentrification. Evidence has shown that
in many urban areas, including Boston, gentrification contains a racial and ethnic dimension.
Residents of neighborhood areas that were predominantly African

Superman
The History of a Legend: Superman
Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single
bound! It s a bird! It s a plane! It s Superman! (Bridwell 11) These celebrated words have echoed for
over six decades in American cultural and social society. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster,
Superman was intended to fight greed, crime, injustice and abuse. The impact created by Superman, or
better known to the average man as Clark Kent, extends far beyond the comic book itself. Although
many have grown to love him for the courage he represents, the personification Superman employs
deviates from what is truly natural or innately human by challenging undisturbed and irrefutable ...

Wright, the introduction of Superman into American cultural was brought about by the need of young
Americans to feel a connection with the common man . But instead, the connotation created by
Superman strays far away from the notion of an ordinary man. By allocating the name Superman, he is
connected to something that is god like and un human. Dennis Dooley and Gary Eagle present the
argument that Superman achieves truly mythic stature, interweaving a pattern of beliefs, literary
conventions and cultural traditions of the American people more powerfully and more accessibly than
any other cultural symbol of the 20th century. But this mythic stature created a culture that allowed its
followers to question nature and its power and allowed for the establishment of beliefs that were
detrimental to the natural order of the world. Even Steve Skelton, the author of The Gospel According
to the World s Greatest Superhero presents the fact there is a parallel between Superman and God.
Have Siegel and Shuster gone too far? The cultural and social superhero of Superman was one that
was intended to attract those who felt disconnected from the American world in which they lived. But,
as time would tell, this action figure would translate into an omnipotent entity. Although most
Americans look up to the Clark Kent disguised as his super self, there are several blurry implications
that remain at the surface of these comic books. By assuming the name Superman,

The Fall Of The Gupta Empire
Numerous empires and civilizations have risen and fallen in many nations since time began like the
Romans, Aztecs, and the Mongols. These empires were powerful with their control over many riches,
people and land masses; however they all experienced a decline in power. Throughout history scholars
regarded India as a great and accomplished nation. Notable civilizations emerged from Indian culture
specifically during the classical period. For example civilizations like the Mauryan Empire and the
Gupta Empire are well known zeniths of Indian culture. Between the early fourth and the mid sixth
century, India experienced the rise and fall of one of its zeniths of civilization . Although the Gupta
Empire is known as one of India s major zeniths, it experienced a decline due to leadership, invasions,
and rebellions. The fall of the Gupta Empire could have been prevented by improving leadership and
overall environment.

Great civilization and empires can collapse as a result of rebellions. New nations are born out of the
groups that secede from larger ones. As the new civilizations arise the old ones continue to decline and
lose the power they held before. The internal structure of an empire must remain strong or the empire
will not stand. Internal rebellions break empires down and strip them of their leadership. The Gupta
Empire was victim to numerous internal rebellions. Groups around places like Magadh fought for
independence. As one civilization broke away others followed suit. The central authority over the
empire weakened as these fight broke out. . With the Gupta Empire breaking apart and full of
numerous fragmented shambles the civilization continued to decrease until it eventually did not

A Hero s Journey Analysis
A hero s journey begins with the ordinary world. This is where the setting is established and the
audience learns the characteristics of the hero. Later, a problem or a central dramatic question disrupts
the easy going nature of the ordinary world. Next is the hero s call to adventure. This is when a
challenge is presented to the hero and disrupts the usual comfort of the ordinary world. The call to
action forces the hero to choose between two conflicting calls. Sometimes, the hero needs multiple
calls before realizing his only means of escape is the Special World. Sometimes the hero refuses the
call to action and the adventure. This is when the hero backs out of the challenge due to insecurity,
fear, or danger. This stage helps to let the audience know the risks of taking the adventure. When ...

This is when the hero finally commits to the journey. The hero is finally ready to cross the gateway
into the Special World. The hero is faced with a problem and must continue into the Special World
where there is no turning back. Internal problems like mental problems with the hero themselves, or
external forces like a kidnapping or a war may also cause the hero to triumph forward in his journey.
After crossing the threshold, the hero is tested with enemies and learning the rules of the Special
World. Here, the hero finds out who can be trusted and finds allies along the way. To prepare himself
for greater challenges, the hero tests his skills and powers, and receives more training from his mentor.
In approach to the cave, the hero gets ready to face his biggest challenge. This leads to the central
ordeal of the story. Next is the ordeal. This is the hero s biggest challenge, where the hero faces death.
The hero may directly die, or it could be the death of an ally or a mentor. Perhaps even the hero causes
a death. Only through this death can the hero be reborn which grants the hero greater powers or

Comparing Dunkin And Costa s Marketing Strategies
As coffeehouses and restaurants, Dunkin and Costa s marketing channels share the same resemblance
in how they want to approach the customers. The two companies now offer franchise option to
potential business partners, both domestic and international. Moreover, each brand adopt different
methods to increase their products presence geographically. Therefore the distribution method that
they adopt can be considered as intensive direct distribution through multichannel marketing. Products
are made and offer directly along with ads, leaflets, or promotional information to customers. At the
same time, both Dunkin and Costa also engage in business to business channel where they depend on
a network of suppliers.
At first glance, Dunkin and Costa adopt the intensive distribution strategy, using multi channel
marketing. Both brands have opened over thousands of stores around the world. For example, in their
2013 annual report, Dunkin Donuts shows that they have opened 10829 Dunkin Donuts stores through
franchisees with 7648 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sawbones Analysis A History Of Hysteria Summary
1. Sawbones Analysis: A History of Hysteria Hysteria was a false diagnosis harshly used to mostly
stigmatize women as mentally ill, when in truth, the affliction was false. The podcast, Sawbones,
provides details of how hysteria was specifically used to target and punish women. With regards to
modern psychological approaches that respect the thoughts of both sexes, the branding of hysteria ,
completely denigrated women. Not only was the label of hysteria unfair, but it devalued the equal
capabilities of females compared to their male counterparts. It may be hard to imagine how this
ridiculous scrutiny of women used to be commonplace. The development and diagnosis of hysteria
certainly goes against to the modernistic beliefs of humanistic psychology ... Show more content on

Implementing a strategy of positive psychology can be much more complicated after diagnosing a
patient, due to often newfound pessimism. Certain diagnoses also contradict principles in specific
branches of psychology. For instance, schizotypal personality disorder, is defined by the DSM V as, A
pattern of acute discomfort in close relationships, cognitive or perceptual distortions, and
eccentricities of behavior . Under the concept of humanistic psychology phenomenology, how do we
determine who has a distorted perception when perception is our own unique experiences? Associating
behavior to the presence of a labelled mental disorder may allow for the opportunity for those
behaviors to intensify or be taken more dramatically (like the aforementioned hysteria). When society
rejects someone due to stigma this can formulate unintended consequences. Mental illness should be
addressed, but if we want to effectively help alleviate disorders, society will need to be more open and
welcoming. No longer should we allow distinctions to severely distance one person from

Analysis Of Ursula Le Guin s The Left Hand Of Darkness
Science fiction is not predictive; it is descriptive, Ursula Le Guin wrote this in her introduction to her
book The Left Hand of Darkness (Le Guin 14). In the introduction, Le Guin writes a section about
science fiction and other fiction and how they are the same because they all have the same purpose
and that is to lie. However, when Le Guin writes about lying she doesn t mean the sky is orange, no,
what she means is authors, herself included, created stories, characters, and settings for readers. They
create these unbelievable worlds and the readers use their imagination to create the characters and
settings in their minds. Readers of fictional stories use their imagination to find the truth in these false
stories or as Le Guin phrased it, the truth is a matter of imagination, (Le Guin 16). Le Guin uses lies
throughout her story The Left Hand of Darkness to express metaphors and through these lies, the
reader uses their imagination to find the truth.
One of the most obvious lies would be the time of the story. Even though in the beginning Le Guin
said it was Ekumenical year 1490 1497 however that was not the case (Guin 1). Le Guin made up a
time period and the world for the reader to imagine when in reality she was truly meaning the story to
take place in the present. She even admits her lie in her introduction, this book is not about the future,
(Le Guin 15). Le Guin lies about the time of the story because then anyone could relate to The Left
Hand of Darkness.

Rip Van Winkle, By Washington Irving
Rip Van Winkle
The short story, Rip Van Winkle has journeyed through many years of popularity in American
literature. This narrative is eloquently written by Washington Irving, a prolific nineteenth century
American writer. The Author sets the story in a village near the Hudson River, along the banks of the
Catskill Mountains where Great Britain once held reigns. Irving presents the reader with a story that
effectively delivers an abundance of connotations representing the era of its origin. Through the use of
characterization, imagery and symbolism, the reader can infer that Washington Irving is conveying a
complex theme of historical transformation in society.
Rip Van Winkle is characterized as an ordinary mortal man who is married to Dame Van Winkle. She
is infuriated by, his idleness, his carelessness, and the ruin he [is] bringing upon his family (Irving 32).
However Rip s actions towards his family and farm are directly opposite to those of his neighbors; as
stated by Irving, he [is] a great favorite among all the good wives of the village (31). Although he is
favored by all the villagers who defend him, his peace is not found there, at home. Irving depicts Rip
as a man who yearns for tranquility, simplicity and content. On the contrary, Dame is portrayed as a
woman who is antagonizing and infuriated. Thus, the two characters can be integrated into the
transformation America was going through in the late 1700 s. One can say that Rip s character, on one

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Technology
Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology Technology has changed every aspect of our lives,
whether it was for the better or for the worse. It has a positive impact on our lives because it allows us
to connect more with people that are farther away, and it grants us access to information about
anything. Unfortunately, it has changed our lives for the worse, too, it makes us over dependent on
technology, and it leads to a decline in face to face conversations. Technology that is constantly in our
face changes the way we think and carry out our everyday lives. For example, when you are standing
in a room full of people instead of conversing with others you would take out your phone and engage
yourself in this world that you have created. Integrated computers can benefit our daily lives, because
it allows us to resurface old information that was part of the old conversation allowing a more
personal conversation. The downside of this is that it could also resurface old fights that you might
have had. All of these positives or negatives can be seen in Black Mirror, Her, Our Computers
Ourselves, and Crispr Radiolab. The positive impact that technology plays on our lives is that it allows
us to connect with people that are far away from us, whether it be via email, phone calls, or any form
of social media. This is a good thing because generations before us who didn t have the telephone or
any other form of communication to talk to relatives far away would live their entire

Sports History Research Paper
My history in sports is pretty big even though I am only 13. I play volleyball, basketball, and softball.
I have a deep love for the game in each of these sports whether it be on the court or in the field. I
started playing volleyball in 1st grade on the CEGCYRA teams here in Eureka. I immediately had a
connection between the competition and just having fun with my friends. One time I remember
playing a game where the ball went into the net and I got it, then Ashley Leman got it back up. It did
not go over but when you were in 1st grade and got the ball out of the net, it was a big deal. I feel like

CEGCYRA from 1st grade till last year on the 6th grade travel team. Our basketball team was pretty
good we only lost to one team and that was El Paso Gridley. Ever since they have been our rivals, we
ALWAYS have a great game with them. One time both teams were playing so good that the score was
below 10 the whole time! This year we beat El Paso in middle school basketball. Which felt really
good.
The 3rd and final sport I play is Softball. When I was little I played t ball for CEGCYRA then that
turned into instructional baseball, which turned into kid pitch, which turned into me playing on the in
house team in Morton. That team was a good team also. We won most of our games I was a pitcher
and played 1st base. I still play those positions in Middle School. Our team will be kinda good but I
don t know. Most of our team last year was 8th graders but now they will be in high school. I want to

Tess Being a Victim of Fate in Tess of the D Urbervilles
The president of the Immortals had done his sport with Tess
In his novel Tess of the d Urbervilles Thomas Hardy expresses his dissatisfaction, weariness, and an
overwhelming sense of injustice at the cruelty of our universal fate disappointment and
disillusionment. Hardy puts out an argument that the hopes and desires of Men are cruelly saddened
by a strong combination of fate, unwanted accidents, mistakes and many sad flaws. Although Tess is
strong willed and is clearly educated emotionally and mentally she soon becomes a victim of fate .

Whilst on the other hand Abraham blames it on the blighted star. I would say that there is a sense of
fate in this chapter with the discussions between Tess and Abraham with regard to the stars.
Even though realistically the event is an accident, Thomas Hardy writes in such a way that we are lead
to believe that it is a cruelty of fate rather than a, direct sense of cause and effect . In the result to the
death, Tess feels tremendously guilty; this will make her more susceptible to her fathers wishes and
doings.
Tess is a beautiful young girl who oozes sexuality; however in this novel her beauty does not do her
any good. We can see examples of this in many chapters; in chapter eight we can see that Alec is
driving at a reckless speed to perhaps appear more manly in the company of Tess. Her natural instinct
is to grasp Alec s arm. It seems to me that Alec s intention was to have some type of physical contact
with Tess. However the arm holding was not enough for Alec so he asked her to grab his waist with
the excuse that he couldn t steer with her latching on. Alec uses Tess as a, sexual conquest . If Tess
wouldn t have killed Prince she wouldn t be exposed to such danger with Alec, in fact she wouldn t
even be on the carriage with Alec as she wouldn t have needed to go to

Personal Essay On Vietnamese Culture
I grew up in Vietnam and came to the United States (U.S.) when I was eleven years old. I have lived in

Yorktown Case Analysis Essays
Running Head: YORKTOWN TECHNOLOGIES CASE ANALYSIS
Yorktown Technologies Case Analysis
Case Recap
Founded in 2001, Yorktown Technologies, Inc. is a company that specializes in the ornamental fish
industry. The globalization of the ornamental fish industry happened over a half a century ago.
Hundreds of freshwater and saltwater fish can be purchased as pets in virtually any industrialized
nation in the world (Broy, 2011). Yorktown Technologies commercializes a genetically modified fish
called GloFish, which appear to glow in the dark (Mueller, 2010). GloFish are zebrafish that have
been genetically modified with fluorescent colors. They are the first genetically modified animals to
become publicly available as pets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fish are not available in California due to state regulations that ban biotech aquatic organisms
(GloFish, 2011). In addition, Singapore where the fish was originally engineered has been reluctant to
approve its sale (Ely, 2004). This places an additional limit on potential marketing and distribution
strategies.
Yorktown Technologies will launch the first commercially available fish that has been genetically
modified. They will be available in the United States in late 2003. They will be available in three
colors: red, green, and orange (GloFish, 2011).
Yorktown Technologies has an exclusive product and market niche. The company has a substantial
number of patents and patent pending applications for GloFish (GloFish, 2011). In addition, the
production, market, and distribution of fluorescent fish are strictly prohibited without the approval of
Yorktown Technologies (GloFish, 2011). This gives the company a monopoly on fluorescent fish and
makes it impossible for other companies to produce, market, and distribute them.
Identifying the Root Problem Components
Yorktown Technologies have several issues that may affect marketing and distribution. The issues are
geographical distribution, production, supply and demand, environmental concerns, and retail outlets.
First, GloFish are not approved for distribution and sale in California. California is an

Pharmaceutical Patents And Its Effects On Society
Everyone loves a good bad guy. It seems to make complex issues easier to deal with when there is a

people view the big drug companies as evil profiteers in the fight against disease, wielding patents to
protect their profits rather than wielding medicine to combat disease. Medicines have been created to
combat disease which greatly improves survival outcomes and daily quality of life. Many of the large
pharmaceutical companies are responsible for inventing and manufacturing a majority of the
medications that have had this positive impact on society. Although it may seem that many view
pharmaceutical companies as profiteering from illness via patents, people world wide benefit from the
process, especially when generic production is authorized. This would never happen without the
current model utilizing pharmaceutical patents.
Patents give intellectual rights to a person or a group of people that invent something. Patents fuel
innovation because they give a temporary monopoly to the inventor that received the patent.
Otherwise, the originator of a product may not receive the credit, more specifically, the financial
reward for creating something useful and sharing it with the world. This applies to medicine just as
much as anything else. Pharmaceutical companies spend enormous amounts of time and treasure to

The Different Affects of Drug Abuse Among Genders
As seen in Long Days Journey into Night by Eugene O Neill, drug abuse affects women and men
differently. Mary Tyrone seems to be affected mentally by her morphine addiction, whereas the men,
Tyrone, Jamie, Edmund, in the household appear to be affected physically by their alcohol addiction.
Cynthia Robbins s Sex Differences in Psychosocial Consequences of Alcohol and Drug Abuse
supports the different effects of drug abuse among men and women. She examines three different
hypotheses concerning gender differences in the impact of alcohol and drug abuse. She claims that the
generalized view of women being more vulnerable lies on physical vulnerability, social control and
labeling, and internalized sex role norms. In addition, she offers a style of deviance perspective, which
suggests that women are more vulnerable to adverse intrapsychic consequences of substance abuse,
but that men are more vulnerable to certain behavioral and interpersonal consequences. Gerardine
Meaney s article also focuses on the generalized view of women and men, specifically of Mary and
Tyrone in the play.
Drug abuse and alcohol abuse are expected to have worse consequences for women than for men
based on biological differences and societal role expectations for men and women. The biological
argument is that women metabolize alcohol at a different rate because of their lower ratio of water to
body weight. Social role expectations exist because of the strong social disapproval of intoxication
and drug

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Photovoltaic Basics
Photovoltaic basics
The sun is the main source of energy on earth, providing the planet with radiant energy which is
transformed once it reaches every substance on the planet into a different kind of energy, making the
wind blow, the seas flow and all atoms move. The energy in the Wind and sea have been used for
centuries and nowadays thanks to the photovoltaic effect, a part of this vast energy can be harnessed
and directly transformed into a more usable way of energy, electricity.
The photovoltaic effect can be vaguely explained as the creation of electric potential and current once
light is absorbed in a semiconductor material. A semiconductor material, can be doped with other
elements in order to force the creation of a certain quantity of free carriers, electrons in n type and
holes in p type semiconductors. When put together, this two differently doped materials form the PN
junction where, through the diffusion of carriers, (i.e. electrons diffuse to the p type semiconductor
and holes to the n type), an area called depletion zone is generated. Then, absorption of a photons in a
semiconductor, generates more electron hole pairs increasing the potential in the device and by
connecting the separated regions by means of a conductor, the free carriers can flow through a circuit

Essay on “Dark Film” and Sunset Blvd.
Film noir, by translation alone, means dark film, and by that measurement Sunset Boulevard certainly
fits the genre. A gloomy story that follows a jaded and sarcastic protagonist, Joe Gillis from his initial
dire circumstances to his untimely death, Sunset Blvd. earns the description dark several times over.
But there is more to film noir than crushingly depressing plotlines. There are common motifs and
icons that are found in most film noirs, such as crime, dark alleys, guns and alcohol. Deeper than this,
film noir features certain visual elements, character archetypes, and themes that create a unique style
of film. Although some have argued that Sunset Blvd. fails to represent some of these elements, it has

Every piece of imagery, down to Norma Desmond s clutching, claw like hands is geared toward
eliciting an ominous and menacing feel. In frame #4, a long shot gives a view into Norma s mansion.
Her multitudes of portraits litter the area, and despite the large size of the room an oppressive, low key
lighting results in a close, claustrophobic atmosphere. The gothic style architecture and arching
windows along with the cluttered interior convey a feeling of something that once was great but has
fallen into disrepair. All this creates a perfect metaphor for Norma s fading fame and career, which is
the main purpose of the settings in film noirs. The dark themes and sinister storylines are mirrored
with great attention to detail in the visual aspects of a film noir.
Film noir employs several character archetypes to tell a story. Cultural changes and shifts in gender
roles of post WWII America unsettled men when many women refused to regress back into traditional
housewife tasks. This fear was manifested in cinema s femme fatale. Deceptive and manipulative,
femme fatales were there to seduce, betray, and destroy the film noir hero. Norma, along with being
deranged, is all of these things. She is at home in her eerie film noir setting. Her movements showing
her as a self absorbed echo of her career in silent era films and her voice and facial expressions set the
listener on edge. Joe Gillis

The Role Of Class In The Gilded Age And Progressive Era
Class
To begin, class influenced the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in the changing working conditions as
a response to industrialization. Class was also apparent in Gilded Age politics and in the changing
political culture that foreshadowed the bureaucratic government of the Progressives. Middle Class
Progressives played a vital role in America by seeking reform and influence among the upper and
working class. Thus, class assumed a prominent role in influencing the Gilded Age and Progressive
Era. Changing Working Conditions
In the 19th century, there were several structural changes in the nature of work. These changes
included deskilling of jobs, which led to the decline of the heroic artisan and economic depressions.
All these factors contributed to tense strikes between workers and employers. During the Antebellum
period, most white American workers were self reliant, but the nature of work and production began to
shift after the Civil War, as the industrial workplace increased in size, immigration swelled, and the
number of wage workers surpassed that of self employed men. Thus, heroic artisans experienced
threats with the emergence of a class of permanent wage workers, which killed their republic dreams
for American economic self sufficiency, property ownership, and self employment. Nevertheless, the
real challenge for white wage Americans began in the 1870s and 1880s, as xenophobic anxieties of
Chinese workers emerged. [1]
Additionally, the late 19th century was

used to spend just one day at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland and at Disneyland Paris. So the strategy

FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME INFANT LEARNING DISABILITIES
Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition which occurs in infants whose mothers abuse alcohol during
pregnancy. This problem has gathered the increasing attention of the medical establishment in recent
years. Although it is difficult to properly diagnose in the newborn infant, studies have shown that fetal
alcohol syndrome results in a number of mental and physical symptoms, such as below normal birth
weight, length, and I.Q. Children born with the syndrome are also found to have a number of learning
disabilities. Some of these disabilities are related to nursing, and thus they can seriously affect the life

Approximately one fourth of all infants born with recognizable defects die before they even reach the
age of four weeks (Abel Sokol, 1986, p. 330). Among those who do survive past the first few weeks, it
has been noted that . . . only a suspicion [of fetal alcohol syndrome) can be raised at this early age
(Aronson Olegard, 1985, p. 137). Thus, the real impact of fetal alcohol syndrome often cannot be
determined until the infant s development has been observed for at least one to two years. Some
studies have indicated that the results of tests administered to learning disabled children at the age of
three tend to yield similar results to those of tests given to the same children at the ages of ten months
and eighteen months (Aronson Olegard, 1985, p. 143). However, it has also been stated that many of
the most serious learning disabilities associated with the syndrome cannot be recognized until after the
child has already begun attending school (Abel Sokol, 1986, p.

Technopoly Neil Postman Summary
Author Neil Postman s main argument in his book Technopoly: A Surrender of Culture to Technology
is not between humanists and scientists but between technology and people. In today s society
technology has become accepted as a friend, a helper, something needed. Postman argues that the
uncontrolled growth of technology destroys the vital sources of our humanity. It creates a culture
without a moral foundation. It undermines certain mental processes and social relations that make
human life worth living Postman XII). Technology according to Postman, creates a culture with no

taking the meaning and control out of information; information has become a form of garbage, not
only incapable of answering the most fundamental human questions but barely useful in providing
coherent direction to the solution of even mundane problems (Postman 69). Postman explains how
society got to this point in his stages of information revolution, starting with the printing press,
expansion of schools, however, he does so in a very black and white manner. There were several
reasons for the rapid growth of the common school, but none was more obvious than that it was a
necessary response to the anxieties and confusion aroused by information on the loose (Postman 62).

Freud, Freud And The Components Of Personality
5.2 Components of Personality According to Freud, the personality structure/psyche/mind of a person,
after modifying the topographical model acts and interacts with three parts namely id, ego and super
ego. This modified model was referred as the structural model of human mind. Let us see each part in
detail. 5.2.1 Id The word id is a latin word meaning it . It is the unorganized part of the personality
structure of a person that comprises of impulsive, basic, instinctual drives of a human being. It is the
child like portion of the mind. Of all the three components, id is the only component that is present
from birth. Hence it represents bodily needs, wants, desires and impulses that do not care about the
demands/expectations of reality and without any accordance to what is right or wrong. According to
Freud, id is the unconscious part of the human mind seeking pleasure. Id acts according to Pleasure
principle. Pleasure principle is defined as the psychic force that demands immediate gratification of
any desire or impulse without showing a single sign of willingness to compromise. The process of
thinking that the id undergoes is called Primary process. This process refers to the illogical, irrational

The legal responsibility of an organization is to abide by all laws and regulations. The expectation is
for the business to follow and obey not only the explicit version of the law but its intended purpose.
The corporation s ethical responsibility is to conduct business and act in accordance with ethical and
moral values even when not required by law. The philanthropic responsibility refers to an organization
s obligation to contribute to the betterment of society through its generosity towards the community
where it resides (Metivier Matteson, 2015).
Triple Bottom Line
The triple bottom line (TBL) is a theory of corporate social responsibility and accounting framework
that focuses on a corporation s long term sustainability in three different areas. It proposes that the
ultimate success of a corporation depends not only on how well it performs financial but also socially
and environmentally (Norman MacDonald, 2004). The TBL concept requires the performance in each
area of sustainability be measured independently (Metivier Matteson, 2015).
The triple bottom line has been commonly referred to as the three Ps for profits, people, and planet
(Slaper Hall, 2011). Similarly to CSR, the economic sustainability measure of TBL evaluates the
profitability of a business. Measured primarily in dollars, the economic sustainability assesses the
variables related to the bottom line (Slaper Hall, 2011). The social

The human condition is a term which references our complicated existence by highlighting our
ongoing ability to adapt and change both our perceptions and values. Through our mental capabilities
of both creativity and imagination, humanity is able to achieve a sense of both self actualisation and
liberation, resulting in them acting as the core of our existence where, without them we would become
susceptible to the overwhelming flaws of the human condition. Evidencing this are the three texts,

Coleridge s This Lime Tree Bower My Prison , is a poem describing a man s changing views as he
contemplates the natural word which he has been prevented from seeing. Coleridge s poem
demonstrates the ability of individuals to modify their morals and values upon receiving a cathartic
release from their relationship with nature, as predicated almost entirely on the imagination. Through
allowing the persona to visualise the encounters his friends are making with nature along their
journey, Coleridge first demonstrates the capabilities of the imagination in allowing us to picture
things in certain detail, as shown through now my friends emerge, which in all exemplifies the
presence of imagination in our relationship with nature. Furthermore, the description of their journey
demonstrates the liberation received from engaging with nature, as shown where they wander in
gladness, which relates to the cathartic release obtained from viewing nature that pushes us to reassess
our ideas and perceptions. By showing his gradual change in tone, the influence of the persona s
imagination is shown, which when in conjunction with his exclamation of yes! reveals our emotional
capabilities if becoming engulfed in our imaginations of nature. Also, by choosing to allow the

Physical Activity and Body Weight vs Diabetes and...
Cardiovascular Disease Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common and well known
afflictions in modern society. It kills and hospitalizes many people every year. CVD is actually a rather
broad category of affliction. It encompasses any disease or condition that affects the heart. These
conditions have effects that range from mild to surgical repair and even to death in extreme cases. The
causes of CVD are fairly well known. It is directly linked to both physical activity (and the obesity
that it prevents) and body mass index (BMI) in the research that we have studied. The BMI is a
measure of the proportion of the body that is made up of fat. The higher a person s BMI number is, the
more body fat they have. The combination of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the tests performed in this study gauged the effects of body mass index (BMI) and physical
activity on cardiovascular disease (CVD) very well, there is, of course, some information that might
be questioned. First of all, many of the experiments that were carried out involved self administered
questionnaires. Since the subjects that were tested reported on their own physical activity there is a
possibility of error, especially since every individual has his/her own ideas of how to measure physical
activity. In addition, one of the studies tested only women who were already experiencing chest pain.
Although that study suggested that exercise reduced chances of CVD more than BMI, these results
could not be extended to men or asymptomatic individuals. Also, there was not a significant follow up
period after the experiments, so the long term effects cannot be deduced. Lastly, one must consider
that there are several other mechanisms that can contribute to CVD, such as diet and family history.
These factors were not taken into account in this research. Diabetes Diabetes is a disorder of the
metabolism centered mostly around carbohydrate metabolism. A diagnostic precursor is high glucose
blood sugar. Diabetes has three forms or types. The first involves autoimmune destruction of the

The Effects Of Music Education On Mainstream Education Essay
This research focuses on answering if music education has enough crossover benefit to include it into
our mainstream education. Two scholarly articles, a blog, a personal story and an online article were
selected and consulted to find the answer to this question. Many authors in many articles had minimal
criticism of music education and most were in favor of music education. Findings were that yes, music
education does in fact have enough crossover benefit to include it into mainstream education. Music
education may be time consuming and sometimes expensive, yet the benefits of self discipline, deeper
conceptual thinking, more developed brain function, and endless creativity of students makes it very
worthwhile.
Henry David Thoreau once stated, If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is
because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or
far away. People have different perceptions about everything, but some statements are simply fact.
Though fact may be fact, opinion and perspective plays a huge role in our society, especially the
education side of society. Everyone on Earth has experienced music in some way, but a question some
have pondered is, does music education have enough crossover benefit to academics to include it in
our mainstream education? As we explore the pages upon pages of research on this topic, it is to be
found that music education provides more than enough crossover

Differences Between Gaap And Ifrs
Introduction
There are two distinct methods of accounting for finances in the business world. These two methods
are the methods both prescribed by the U.S., which is known as the generally accepted accounting
principles (GAAP), and that which is used by the international community known as international
financial reporting standards (IFRS). GAAP is regulated by the financial accounting standards board
(FASB) while IFRS is regulated by the international accounting standards board (IASB). These two
methods are currently under a process which is known as convergence or harmonization so that the
United States will eventually become integrated into the global community (Miller, S. E. 2009). This
will cause financial statements to be more usable for more people across the globe as well as enhance
citizens of the U.S. s ability to perform business more efficiently internationally.
Principles Versus Rules Based Methods
There are many challenges and hurdles to overcome in order to achieve harmonization between GAAP
and IFRS. The differences are widespread. Most importantly and fundamentally GAAP is considered
to be more rules based, while principalities are largely what guide the users of IFRS. GAAP
Regulations are more detailed, specific and voluminous. Conversely, IFRS regulations are less
voluminous and make allowance for more exceptions. As an example IFRS allows the reversal of a
write down after the fact while GAAP that when a write down is taken then it is irreversible.

Professor Molly Tetrault Analysis Paper
Perspectives on Foster Care
In the past few decades there has be an increasing amount of children placed in the foster care system.
With the amount of rising teen pregnancies and maternal drug abuse means increasing numbers of
infants abandoned at birth. There have been many cases of child abuse or neglect that have been on
the rise. State and local agencies are unable to suitably supervise foster homes or arrange adoptions.
Statistics show that many children will spend most of their childhood and teenage years in the foster
care system, which has shown to leave emotional scars on the child. Today, Child Welfare groups are
looking for federal funding and legislation to increase programs and services aimed at keeping
families together.
Child welfare systems typically receive and investigate reports of possible child abuse and neglect;
provide services to families that need assistance in the protection and care of their children; arrange
for children to live with foster families when they are not safe at home; and arrange for reunification,
adoption, or other permanent family connections for children leaving foster care. When you look up
what the Child welfare system it says,
The major role of the Child Welfare System in the twenty first century is to insure the safety,
permanency, and well being of

  • 2. The Negative Effects Of Gentrification Gentrification, a very controversial topic that has just recently been brought to the surface in the past few years, is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle class taste ( Gentrification ). The two central arguments behind gentrification reflect its deeply political controversy. One side of the political spectrum argues that gentrification decreases the rate of crime and increases a neighborhood s value, while the other side argues that gentrification is a form of institutionalized racism that replaces low income families and dramatically increases rates of homelessness. The negative effects of this issue could not be anymore clear. In major cities like Boston, the cost of living has skyrocketed just in the last five years. This process of removing housing districts to increase the neighborhood s value is negatively affecting low income families, primarily people of color, while wealthy middle to upper class white families are positively benefiting from it. Gentrification is interfering with the diversity and economy of many urban areas and historically low income neighborhoods. There is a very high displacement rate in the United States, particularly in states like Massachusetts and New York due to gentrification. Evidence has shown that in many urban areas, including Boston, gentrification contains a racial and ethnic dimension. Residents of neighborhood areas that were predominantly African American, Black, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It s Superman! (Bridwell 11) These celebrated words have echoed for over six decades in American cultural and social society. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster, Superman was intended to fight greed, crime, injustice and abuse. But instead, the connotation created by Superman strays far away from the notion of an ordinary man. By allocating the name Superman, he is connected to something that is god like and un human. Dennis Dooley and Gary Eagle present the argument that Superman achieves truly mythic stature, interweaving a pattern of beliefs, literary conventions and cultural traditions of the American people more powerfully and more accessibly than any other cultural symbol of the 20th century. But this mythic stature created a culture that allowed its followers to question nature and its power and allowed for the establishment of beliefs that were detrimental to the natural order of the world. Even Steve Skelton, the author of The Gospel According to the World s Greatest Superhero presents the fact there is a parallel between Superman and God. Have Siegel and Shuster gone too far? The cultural and social superhero of Superman was one that was intended to attract those who felt disconnected from the American world in which they lived. With regards to modern psychological approaches that respect the thoughts of both sexes, the branding of hysteria , completely denigrated women. • 8. Analysis Of Ursula Le Guin s The Left Hand Of Darkness Science fiction is not predictive; it is descriptive, Ursula Le Guin wrote this in her introduction to her book The Left Hand of Darkness (Le Guin 14). In the introduction, Le Guin writes a section about science fiction and other fiction and how they are the same because they all have the same purpose and that is to lie. However, when Le Guin writes about lying she doesn t mean the sky is orange, no, what she means is authors, herself included, created stories, characters, and settings for readers. They create these unbelievable worlds and the readers use their imagination to create the characters and settings in their minds. Readers of fictional stories use their imagination to find the truth in these false stories or as Le Guin phrased it, the truth is a matter of imagination, (Le Guin 16). Le Guin uses lies throughout her story The Left Hand of Darkness to express metaphors and through these lies, the reader uses their imagination to find the truth. One of the most obvious lies would be the time of the story. Even though in the beginning Le Guin said it was Ekumenical year 1490 1497 however that was not the case (Guin 1). Le Guin made up a time period and the world for the reader to imagine when in reality she was truly meaning the story to take place in the present. • 9. Rip Van Winkle, By Washington Irving Rip Van Winkle The short story, Rip Van Winkle has journeyed through many years of popularity in American literature. This narrative is eloquently written by Washington Irving, a prolific nineteenth century American writer. The Author sets the story in a village near the Hudson River, along the banks of the Catskill Mountains where Great Britain once held reigns. Irving presents the reader with a story that effectively delivers an abundance of connotations representing the era of its origin. Through the use of characterization, imagery and symbolism, the reader can infer that Washington Irving is conveying a complex theme of historical transformation in society. Rip Van Winkle is characterized as an ordinary mortal man who is married to Dame Van Winkle. She is infuriated by, his idleness, his carelessness, and the ruin he [is] bringing upon his family (Irving 32). However Rip s actions towards his family and farm are directly opposite to those of his neighbors; as stated by Irving, he [is] a great favorite among all the good wives of the village (31). Although he is favored by all the villagers who defend him, his peace is not found there, at home. Irving depicts Rip as a man who yearns for tranquility, simplicity and content. On the contrary, Dame is portrayed as a woman who is antagonizing and infuriated. Thus, the two characters can be integrated into the transformation America was going through in the late 1700 s. It has a positive impact on our lives because it allows us to connect more with people that are farther away, and it grants us access to information about anything. Unfortunately, it has changed our lives for the worse, too, it makes us over dependent on technology, and it leads to a decline in face to face conversations. Technology that is constantly in our face changes the way we think and carry out our everyday lives. For example, when you are standing in a room full of people instead of conversing with others you would take out your phone and engage yourself in this world that you have created. Integrated computers can benefit our daily lives, because it allows us to resurface old information that was part of the old conversation allowing a more personal conversation. The downside of this is that it could also resurface old fights that you might have had. All of these positives or negatives can be seen in Black Mirror, Her, Our Computers Ourselves, and Crispr Radiolab. The positive impact that technology plays on our lives is that it allows us to connect with people that are far away from us, whether it be via email, phone calls, or any form of social media. Disease kills many people on a daily basis all around the world. However, many people view the big drug companies as evil profiteers in the fight against disease, wielding patents to protect their profits rather than wielding medicine to combat disease. Medicines have been created to combat disease which greatly improves survival outcomes and daily quality of life. Many of the large pharmaceutical companies are responsible for inventing and manufacturing a majority of the medications that have had this positive impact on society. Although it may seem that many view pharmaceutical companies as profiteering from illness via patents, people world wide benefit from the process, especially when generic production is authorized. This would never happen without the current model utilizing pharmaceutical patents. Patents give intellectual rights to a person or a group of people that invent something. Patents fuel innovation because they give a temporary monopoly to the inventor that received the patent. Otherwise, the originator of a product may not receive the credit, more specifically, the financial reward for creating something useful and sharing it with the world. This applies to medicine just as much as anything else. Pharmaceutical companies spend enormous amounts of time and treasure to research and develop new, effective and safe medications to ... Mary Tyrone seems to be affected mentally by her morphine addiction, whereas the men, Tyrone, Jamie, Edmund, in the household appear to be affected physically by their alcohol addiction. Cynthia Robbins s Sex Differences in Psychosocial Consequences of Alcohol and Drug Abuse supports the different effects of drug abuse among men and women. She examines three different hypotheses concerning gender differences in the impact of alcohol and drug abuse. She claims that the generalized view of women being more vulnerable lies on physical vulnerability, social control and labeling, and internalized sex role norms. In addition, she offers a style of deviance perspective, which suggests that women are more vulnerable to adverse intrapsychic consequences of substance abuse, but that men are more vulnerable to certain behavioral and interpersonal consequences. Gerardine Meaney s article also focuses on the generalized view of women and men, specifically of Mary and Tyrone in the play. Drug abuse and alcohol abuse are expected to have worse consequences for women than for men based on biological differences and societal role expectations for men and women. The biological argument is that women metabolize alcohol at a different rate because of their lower ratio of water to body weight. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Photovoltaic Basics Photovoltaic basics The sun is the main source of energy on earth, providing the planet with radiant energy which is transformed once it reaches every substance on the planet into a different kind of energy, making the wind blow, the seas flow and all atoms move. The energy in the Wind and sea have been used for centuries and nowadays thanks to the photovoltaic effect, a part of this vast energy can be harnessed and directly transformed into a more usable way of energy, electricity. The photovoltaic effect can be vaguely explained as the creation of electric potential and current once light is absorbed in a semiconductor material. A semiconductor material, can be doped with other elements in order to force the creation of a certain quantity of free carriers, electrons in n type and holes in p type semiconductors. When put together, this two differently doped materials form the PN junction where, through the diffusion of carriers, (i.e. electrons diffuse to the p type semiconductor and holes to the n type), an area called depletion zone is generated. • 24. Essay on “Dark Film” and Sunset Blvd. Film noir, by translation alone, means dark film, and by that measurement Sunset Boulevard certainly fits the genre. A gloomy story that follows a jaded and sarcastic protagonist, Joe Gillis from his initial dire circumstances to his untimely death, Sunset Blvd. earns the description dark several times over. But there is more to film noir than crushingly depressing plotlines. There are common motifs and icons that are found in most film noirs, such as crime, dark alleys, guns and alcohol. Deeper than this, film noir features certain visual elements, character archetypes, and themes that create a unique style of film. Her multitudes of portraits litter the area, and despite the large size of the room an oppressive, low key lighting results in a close, claustrophobic atmosphere. The gothic style architecture and arching windows along with the cluttered interior convey a feeling of something that once was great but has fallen into disrepair. All this creates a perfect metaphor for Norma s fading fame and career, which is the main purpose of the settings in film noirs. The dark themes and sinister storylines are mirrored with great attention to detail in the visual aspects of a film noir. Film noir employs several character archetypes to tell a story. Cultural changes and shifts in gender roles of post WWII America unsettled men when many women refused to regress back into traditional housewife tasks. This fear was manifested in cinema s femme fatale. Deceptive and manipulative, femme fatales were there to seduce, betray, and destroy the film noir hero. The Role Of Class In The Gilded Age And Progressive Era Class To begin, class influenced the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in the changing working conditions as a response to industrialization. Class was also apparent in Gilded Age politics and in the changing political culture that foreshadowed the bureaucratic government of the Progressives. Middle Class Progressives played a vital role in America by seeking reform and influence among the upper and working class. Thus, class assumed a prominent role in influencing the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Changing Working Conditions In the 19th century, there were several structural changes in the nature of work. These changes included deskilling of jobs, which led to the decline of the heroic artisan and economic depressions. All these factors contributed to tense strikes between workers and employers. During the Antebellum period, most white American workers were self reliant, but the nature of work and production began to shift after the Civil War, as the industrial workplace increased in size, immigration swelled, and the number of wage workers surpassed that of self employed men. Thus, heroic artisans experienced threats with the emergence of a class of permanent wage workers, which killed their republic dreams for American economic self sufficiency, property ownership, and self employment. Nevertheless, the real challenge for white wage Americans began in the 1870s and 1880s, as xenophobic anxieties of Chinese workers emerged. [1] Additionally, the late 19th century was ... Coleridge s This Lime Tree Bower My Prison , is a poem describing a man s changing views as he contemplates the natural word which he has been prevented from seeing. Coleridge s poem demonstrates the ability of individuals to modify their morals and values upon receiving a cathartic release from their relationship with nature, as predicated almost entirely on the imagination. Through allowing the persona to visualise the encounters his friends are making with nature along their journey, Coleridge first demonstrates the capabilities of the imagination in allowing us to picture things in certain detail, as shown through now my friends emerge, which in all exemplifies the presence of imagination in our relationship with nature. Furthermore, the description of their journey demonstrates the liberation received from engaging with nature, as shown where they wander in gladness, which relates to the cathartic release obtained from viewing nature that pushes us to reassess our ideas and perceptions. By showing his gradual change in tone, the influence of the persona s imagination is shown, which when in conjunction with his exclamation of yes! reveals our emotional capabilities if becoming engulfed in our imaginations of nature. These conditions have effects that range from mild to surgical repair and even to death in extreme cases. The causes of CVD are fairly well known. It is directly linked to both physical activity (and the obesity that it prevents) and body mass index (BMI) in the research that we have studied. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the tests performed in this study gauged the effects of body mass index (BMI) and physical activity on cardiovascular disease (CVD) very well, there is, of course, some information that might be questioned. First of all, many of the experiments that were carried out involved self administered questionnaires. Since the subjects that were tested reported on their own physical activity there is a possibility of error, especially since every individual has his/her own ideas of how to measure physical activity. In addition, one of the studies tested only women who were already experiencing chest pain. Although that study suggested that exercise reduced chances of CVD more than BMI, these results could not be extended to men or asymptomatic individuals. Also, there was not a significant follow up period after the experiments, so the long term effects cannot be deduced. Lastly, one must consider that there are several other mechanisms that can contribute to CVD, such as diet and family history. These factors were not taken into account in this research. • 43. Differences Between Gaap And Ifrs Introduction There are two distinct methods of accounting for finances in the business world. These two methods are the methods both prescribed by the U.S., which is known as the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and that which is used by the international community known as international financial reporting standards (IFRS). GAAP is regulated by the financial accounting standards board (FASB) while IFRS is regulated by the international accounting standards board (IASB). These two methods are currently under a process which is known as convergence or harmonization so that the United States will eventually become integrated into the global community (Miller, S. E. 2009). This will cause financial statements to be more usable for more people across the globe as well as enhance citizens of the U.S. s ability to perform business more efficiently internationally. Principles Versus Rules Based Methods There are many challenges and hurdles to overcome in order to achieve harmonization between GAAP and IFRS. The differences are widespread.
