utilizes different search techniques.
 When a query or keyword is entered in search
box it checks its “index” with query.
 Relevant matches are retrived as ‘search results’
3.TYPES
 Crawler based search engines
 Directories
 Speciality search engines
 Hybrid search engines
 Meta search engines
3.1.CRAWLER BASED SEARCH
ENGINES
 Search engines that use software programs
are called “crawlers”, “spiders” .These
programs can access the webpages to
categorize and analyze them and then add
them in search engine database, where any
user can find them when searching
Examples: Google,Yahoo,Ask.com

 Directories are websites sectioned in specific
categories by human editors and are then
placed in the “Directories” database.
 Example
 Yahoo Directory(www.yahoo.com)
3.3.SPECIALITY SEARCH
ENGINE
 They help the user to search in different areas
in specific types of lists that are specialized in
specific topic would be beneficial for narrowing
down the searching process.
 Examples
 Medhunt(provides only medical information)
3.4.HYBRID SEARCH ENGINE
 These are search engines that use both
crawler based searches and directory
searches to obtain their results.
 Example
 Yahoo.com
 Google.com
3.5.META SEARCH ENGINE
 These are search engines that combine all the
results from other search engines into one big
list.

 Metacrawler
 Dogpile

 Be specific
 Use the + symbol and - symbol
 Use Quotation marks
 Combining symbols
5.BOOLEAN SEARCH
 Boolean searches use the “boolean operators”
to combine words and make the search topic
more specific and limited to the user.
 Boolean Operators:
 And
 Not
 OR
 Near
Pen
pen NOT Paper
OR

contain the search topics. It will take every

created pages
 Each time you search,YST scan through its
database of web pages
8.SEARCH COMPONENT
 Any search application has 2 major
components they are
1. Indexing component
2. Search component
Search components(cont..)
 1. Indexing :
 2.Searching:
depending on user request it gives
response.
9.HOW SEARCH ENGINE
WORKS
10.ADVANTAGES
 Enable quick search to vast amount of
information from one search box
 Search on specific type or piece of information
is possible
 Different type of search engines enable to look
for specific type of documents.
11.DISADVANTA
GES
 Makes every one as dependent
 Reduces thinking capacity of
individuals
 Unrelated information in some web
sites.
Limitation:
 Cannot index sites governed by passwords.
12.CONCLUSION
 So, I conclude by saying that with the use of
search engines any individual can access the
information which they need. And also search
engine provides quicker access.
 Search engines now a days are playing vital
