While badges and achievements have their place, some training programs often still require participants to have a printed or PDF certificate bearing their name as proof of completing a task. Griffith University developed a tool to fit this need some years ago and it has recently been transformed into a Blackboard Building Block, allowing more sustainable usage and customisation options. This presentation will talk through the history of the project and demonstrate the capabilities of the new Building Block.

As video becomes an increasingly common content delivery type, the question arises how to take best advantage of this medium. Very important is how to know that learners actually *understand* what they watch, not just that they watch or how much they watch. The best way to do this is with in-video assessments, provided as part of the standard offering by Kaltura.
In this presentation we will discuss basic use models for in-video assessments, but also discuss more advanced uses, and how to turn OER video content, student-generated videos, and even imperfect video performances into valuable teaching moments.
Finally, we will discuss how video analytics can be generated, and evaluated, including using them for adaptive learning experiences.

While these are excellent resources that outlines the goals and standards to improve the learning experience of students in an online or blended course environment, workload associated with its deployment and management is difficult to evaluate.
With increasing strain on teaching and learning support teams within institutions, this exacerbates the challenge faced by instructors and academics of HOW to approach improving their courses in a scalable and manageable way.
This workshop will focus on facilitating participants in the development of a course evolution and management framework. The goal is to guide participants in establishing a unique set of foundations for course design, upon which iterative improvements can be planned and executed in a manageable manner. These can then be mapped against relevant Exemplary Course Design Rubric elements to create short-, mid-, and long-term milestones.
A presentation on the use of online Assessment Diaries at Glamorgan. The presentation will enable the viewer to understand the logistical process of gathering assessment deadlines and feedback dates and how these are brought together for a student and staff overview of the Assessment Diaries. Playing is associated to pleasure and fun whereas academic learning is associated to effort and hard work. Many research has shown the benefits of introducing games in academic teaching as a way to improve learning. Curiosity is also important when learning. Indeed, when curiosity is awakened, people learn without resistance. In order to improve the learning experience, a serious game was integrated in a MOOC. The use of a serious game as a form of evaluation in a MOOC is a true innovation in education: students would play a video game where different situations were presented and they would solve problems related to the courses.
Innovating in education is certainly a challenge. Although integrating a serious game in the MOOC platform needed a considerable amount of technical effort, it was an absolute success: the completion rate was high (31%) with a great percentage of young students (49%) following the courses.

The past few years have seen an exponential growth of the number of MOOCs worldwide. However, it is proven by the avaivalable completion rate data that motivation can quickly fade even for students who are highly motivated at the beginning of the courses. Faced with this realty, it seems crucial for the future of MOOCs to adress this motivational issue and to find ways to improve the completion rates.
IFP School launched two MOOCs – “Sustainable Mobility” and “Oil&Gas” – which saw unusally high completion rates.
In this paper we analyze the results obtained within these two MOOCs. Our goal is to identify the factors that made such completion rates possible and to understand how these key issues help to produce a succesful MOOC. By this analysis, we are able to give some tips in terms of video recording, interactive assignment design such as Serious Game or Mini-games and participant mentoring to promote motivation. Applying these tips when designing a MOOC will minimize the chance of participant withdrawal and thus lead to high completion rates.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
