Multiculturart - Understanding Minority Cultures
1. Multiculturart- Let’s know the culture of minorities
We would like to inform you about our project which has been realized at our school for
two years. It is a countrywide project which has been shared by some other schools in
Slovakia. This project is aimed to human tolerance towards our minority groups and we want
to show that though our cultures are different we are almost the same.
We have been choosen to this project altogether with eight other schools by a national organization
called „Human in danger“. We experienced a week in „Banska Stiavnica“ where we were given
basic instructions by lecturers - specialists what to do, how to work. We were living in a suburb of
Banska Stiavnica because it was close to Romanies‘ village. The schools were divided into three
groups, the first one had to record short documentary, the second one theatre performance and the
trird one was choosen to realize art photos. We belonged to the third group. The main target of this
special course was to learn how we would realize it at our schools. We were working outside in teh
Romanies‘ area and with help of Romanies‘ women. We didn‘t learn just how to take nice photos
but also how we would get along with those people. We learnt a lot about their real life and
experienced it.Tthank to that we could start the same activity at our school.
When we turned back to school, we started to work on our own. We did the same things like those
ones at course, but indepedently now. We got cameras, a contact person. I must admit that despite
of apprehensions we had before the work, we are so satisfied with the results. If somebody says
a word „gypsy“ everyone is disgusted. But after this experience we have to acknowledge that except
for a few problematic people we didn’t meet agressive people. They´re very polite, they keep
smiling. Our thanks belong to teachers, Maria Kiabová and Maria Kušnirová, who helped us with
everything.
We have published our pack of photos after we finished the work. We met the other schools, which
also presented their abillities in Bratislava. Our materials have been released in a methodology
guidebook as a final output of all of project. This year we are working on a new school topic „The
multiculural education“ thanks to the result of our preceding project. We appreciate the fact we are
a part of a team that helps to increase tolerance among people who are a little bit different as they
are. It‘s probably next small but very important step to global target - the world without violence and
racism.
