This project aimed to increase incomes of sorghum and pearl millet producers in Mali by raising productivity and profitability through disseminating improved technologies. The objective was achieved by enhancing farmers' knowledge of productivity-enhancing technologies like improved seeds, soil fertility management, and pest control through farmer field schools and demonstrations. As a result, adopting farmers realized a 51% yield increase for sorghum and 72% for pearl millet. Over 260,000 farmers were trained through this multi-year project funded by USAID and implemented in partnership with local organizations.

Assessment SNV- KMDP forage interventions in North Rift, KenyaProDairy E.A. Ltd
The experience in North Rift Region (Kenya) since 2016 with the “Maize Train”, a concept promoted and supported by the Kenya Market-led Dairy Programme (KMDP) of SNV Kenya, has shown that maize silage making is viable in Kenya on-farm, as well as in bales for trading purposes.
Contractors and commercial forage producers successfully turned around the existing poor practices of silage making, where use is made of forage harvesters with a capacity too small for the acreage planted, harvested too early, with too long chopping length, no kernel crushers and long interval between start of making the silage pit and final sealing. These existing practices result in enormous losses during ensiling and feed-out and greatly reduce nutritional value (MJ ME/kg DM) of the silage and dry matter (DM) intake of the cows. Added to this is the risk of poor anaerobic fermentation giving yeast, moulds and Bacillus chances to spoil the silage.

Traditional sorghum grown in the rainy season is often vulnerable to grain mold attack, making it unfit for human consumption. But with improved sorghum cultivars that are less susceptible to molds, all would not be lost. Also, grain harvested in the rainy season can still fetch a profit from the brewing industry (whiskey), and at a more basic level, from the poultry feed industry, which is growing at a rate of 15-20% per annum.
Access to seed and information about new varieties and hybrids of sorghum, pearl millet, and associated intercrops, are major constraints to adoption of available production technologies. The “Farmer Managed Seed Enterprises in Mali (FarmSEM)” project, funded by USAID aims to catalyze growth of the Malian agriculture sector through increased access to improved seed which is recognized as one of the major requirements for increasing agricultural productivity.

ICRISAT’s Gender Research Program recently brought together breeders, value chain stakeholders and social scientists from Mali, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Nigeria to define priority traits of cultivars of sorghum, millet and groundnut during a 4-day workshop. Prior to the workshop, studies were carried out with the national agricultural research systems (NARS) partners in the above countries, to examine and assess the trait preferences of key stakeholders, especially taking into account the specificity of traits with respect to gender-related needs. The results of these studies were presented during the workshop. The expected output is priority trait demands translated into new market-driven and gender-responsive product profiles for the breeding programs at ICRISAT and NARS.

To improve smallholder farmers’ access to new improved varieties, a digital variety catalog tool created by ICRISAT in partnership with public and private institutions was recently launched. A virtual hands-on training program on developing geospatial maps for supporting insurance products using Google Earth Engine and semi-automatic techniques was conducted for participants in Pakistan as part of the project “Strengthening Post-COVID-19 Food Security and Locust Attacks”. The nine participants were from the PARC Agrotech company (PATCO) technical team and crop reporting service teams from Punjab and Sindh in Pakistan. They were introduced to remote sensing and its applications in agriculture. Hands-on training using Google Earth Engine (GEE), Image Processing Software – ERDAS 2015 and various automatic classification techniques was provided along with several applications for using these modern tools.

ICRISAT and HarvestPlus signed an agreement for scientific and technical collaboration between the two global organizations. Mr Arun Baral, CEO, HarvestPlus, and Dr Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, which is made and entered into by IFPRI on behalf of its HarvestPlus Program. On the occasion, Dr Hughes said, After 17 years of fruitful collaboration on biofortification research, we have now decided to elevate this partnership. ICRISAT and HarvestPlus will work together more closely, making available micronutrient-rich varieties, high-quality seed and related technologies to the farming communities and consumers. 1. Scaling Up Sorghum and Millet Technologies
To increase productivity, improve nutrition and better incomes
To increase the incomes of sorghum and pearl
millet producers in targeted intervention areas
by raising productivity and profitability of these
cereals.
Goal
To improve sorghum and pearl millet-
based production systems in Mopti,
Sikasso and Timbuktu regions of
Mali through strengthened research-
development partnerships for large-scale
utilization of priority proven technologies.
In order to achieve the above objective,
the project had two sub objectives:
1. Enhancing farmers’ knowledge of
available productivity enhancing
technologies
2. Enhancing farmers’ access to improved
technologies by strengthening linkages
and trust between suppliers of key
inputs and the producers.
Open-pollinated varieties and hybrids of sorghum
and millet, seed treatment, integrated soil fertility
and Striga management, and biological control of
the millet head miner.
Farmers who adopted these improved technologies
for sorghum and pearl millet production in their
field have increased their yield by 51 percent for
sorghum and 72 percent for Pearl Millet.

2. Improved seed
A total of 48 tons of certified seeds was distributed
among project beneficiaries in order to disseminate
improved varieties through Farmer Field Schools and
demonstration plots. Seed multipliers under project
supervision have produced more than 403 tons of
certified seeds:

Enhancing women and men farmers’ knowledge of new
sorghum and millet production technologies:

29,852 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) facilitators (including
10,448 women facilitators) trained on best agriculture
practices including; integrated Striga and soil fertility
management, seed treatment and biological control of millet
head miner among others.
261,197 farmers (among them 91,419 women) trained by
476 extensionists (including 165 women extensionists) trained
in agriculture best practices for both millet and sorghum.
1,082 seed producers (including 378 women seed
producers) trained on seed production techniques and
post-harvest handling.
A total of 68,299 hectares covered by above improved
technologies.

Sustainability
Farmer Field Schools (FFS) approach is appropriate for
dissemination of improved Millet and Sorghum
varieties. Innovation Platforms (IPs) initiated will
contribute to overcome constraints occurring at all
levels of the value chain for the sustainability of the
achieved results. They will gather all involved actors,
and exchange information on different opportunities
related to the entire sorghum-millet value chain when
the project phases out. The first IPs have been are
operational since 2018 cropping season.
