- 1. SAWS BY: MELVIN ER-ER In the metal workshop, materials (especially metals) are cut to shape before filing. The numerous types of saw used for cutting purposes in the school workshop including the hacksaw, the junior hacksaw, the sheet saw and the piercing saw HACKSAW This has a steel frame, which can be turned at right angles for cutting deep into the material. The blade is secured in the rigid frame. The teeth point forward to enable the saw to cut on the forward stroke. hacksaw Hacksaw (adjustment frame)
- 2. Piercing saw Hacksaws blade are made of cast or high-speed steel. There are two types: Flexible and All hard – snaps easily, and it is therefore not recommended for school work. the blades come in the following lengths; 225, 250 and 300 mm. they are also available with 14, 18, 24 and 32 teeth per 25mm for cutting different materials. SAW TEETH FOR DIFFERENT MATERIALS At least three consecutive teeth should be in contact with material. If the material is soft and has a large section, use a blade with few teeth per 25 mm (14 or 18 teeth per 25 mm) use a fine-tooth
- 3. blade when cutting a fairly thin section. Points to watch when using the hacksaw are as follows: Hold the work securely in the vice. Grip the hacksaw firmly, using both hands. Use the same stance as for filling. Use the full length of the blade. Move the blade in a straight line to avoid breaking it. Do not exert too much pressure on the blade. 7. Make sure the blade is held tightly in the frame; if it is loose, it is likely to break. Other saws
- 4. The junior hacksaw has a spring tension frame, which takes blade about 150 mm long and 6 mm wide. It is a useful tool for small work. The sheet saw is used for cutting large sheets of metal or other materials, and is fitted with the standard hacksaw blade(32 teeth per 25 mm) The piercing saw is used for fine work, either for decorative patterns or for cutting circles in beaten metalwork. To fix the blade, loosen one end and pass it through a hole drilled in the work, then re-fix it in the frame.
