2. INTRODUCTION
Millions of people in the world suffer
from stress related problems, mood
disorders, mental retardation, dementia
psychosis etc.
Prevalence among adults is 0.5% to 1.5% and
annual incidences are in range of 0.5 to 5.0 per 10,000.
Several causes were explained under the heading of
mental illness, major ones are heredity, social and
environmental factors.

3. Various mental disorders like Unmada
Apasmara, Apatantraka, Chittodvega
Atattvabhinivesha , etc. are described
in Ayurveda
Unmada (Psychosis) has been observed worldwide and
about 24 million people suffer from this disorder.
Here in Unmada person loses his Satwa, Buddhi, Smriti,
Achara etc. it can be corrected through Jnana, Vigyana
etc, so Satwavajaya Chikitsa is considered to be the
best treatment modality.

धीद्धिभ्रमः Distortion of Buddhi.
सत्तत्तिऩररप्ऱि Fluctuation of Mind.
ऩयामकु ऱा दृक्ष्ट Anxious look.
अधीरिा Fear, Anxiety.
अबििाक Uncontrolled, irrelevant speech.
शून्यं हृदयं Feeling of hollowness of Heart.

6. SATWAVAJAYA
The word Satwavajaya ‘Satwa’ and ‘Avajaya’.
The word ‘Satwa’ refers to being existence, excellence.
The word ‘Avajaya’ means overcoming ,victory.
The word ‘Satwavajaya’ refers to self-command , strength
of mind . (Monier William )
Acharya Charaka , who introduced Satwavajaya Chikitsa
for mental disorders , which is a non-pharmacological
approach equivalent to modern psychotherapy.

7. AIM OF SATWAVAJAYA CHIKITSA
“The aim of Satvavajaya Cikitsa is to
enhance the Satwa Guna in order to correct
the imbalanced state of Rajas and Tamas .”

following methods of treatment of mental diseases.

Vijnanam (Educating the Patient)
Dhairya (Moral Boosting)
Smriti (Reviving the Knowledge)
Samadhi (Abstaining from Over Indulgence in

13. CONCLUSION……..
Unmada (Psychosis) is a known
disorder since ancient time
A stable & harmonious equilibrium
between Man & his Environment is needed to reduce man’s
vulnerability to mental diseases & to permit him to lead a
more productive & satisfying life.
It is a non-pharmacological approach for treating the
mental disorders. It is based on Jnana, Vijnanam, etc
By Ayurvedic line of treatment with Satwavajaya one can
able to treat mental diseases effectively. 13
