Sanitary Landfills: Role in
Handling Wastes
By
Er. T. AYISHA NAZIBA, Dr. S. PUGALENDHI
SanitaryLandfills
 A sanitary landfill is a waste disposal method designed
to safely and efficiently manage solid waste while
minimizing environmental impacts and health risks.
Unlike traditional dumpsites, sanitary landfills are
engineered facilities equipped with protective liners,
leachate collection systems, and gas management
systems to contain and manage waste in a controlled
manner.
WasteDisposal
and
Management
 Containment: Sanitary landfills use multiple layers of
impermeable liners (such as clay and synthetic
materials) to prevent contaminants from leaching into
surrounding soil and groundwater.
 Leachate Collection: A network of pipes and drains
collects leachate (liquid generated from decomposing
waste) for treatment and proper disposal, preventing
pollution of water resources.
 Gas Management: Methane and other gases produced
by decomposing waste are collected through gas
extraction systems and may be utilized for energy
generation (e.g., through landfill gas-to-energy
projects).
Environmental
Protection
 Groundwater Protection: The impermeable liners and
leachate collection systems prevent harmful substances
from entering groundwater, protecting drinking water
sources and aquatic ecosystems.
 Surface Water Protection: Sanitary landfills are
designed to minimize surface runoff and erosion,
reducing the risk of water pollution from landfill
activities.
 Air Quality Management: Gas management systems
mitigate the release of methane and other greenhouse
gases into the atmosphere, contributing to air quality
improvement and climate change mitigation.
Waste
Compactionand
Covering
 Waste Compaction: Waste materials are compacted and
layered to optimize space utilization within the landfill,
reducing the overall footprint and extending the
lifespan of the facility.
 Daily Cover: At the end of each operational day, a layer
of soil or alternative cover material is applied over
exposed waste to control odors, deter pests, and
minimize litter.
Regulatory
Compliance
 Environmental Regulations: Sanitary landfills must
comply with strict regulations and permitting
requirements set by local, state, and federal authorities
to ensure safe waste disposal practices and
environmental protection.
 Monitoring and Reporting: Landfill operators are
responsible for monitoring leachate quality, gas
emissions, groundwater, and surface water quality to
assess environmental impacts and demonstrate
compliance with regulatory standards.
Communityand
PublicHealth
 Disease Control: Sanitary landfills prevent the spread
of diseases by effectively isolating and containing
waste materials, minimizing exposure to vectors (such
as rodents and insects) and pathogens.
 Aesthetics and Land Use: Properly managed sanitary
landfills minimize visual blight and nuisance odors,
promoting community acceptance and minimizing
impacts on adjacent land uses.
Long-Term
Management
 Closure and Post-Closure Care: Upon reaching
capacity, sanitary landfills undergo closure procedures,
including covering with a final cap, installing long-
term monitoring systems, and implementing post-
closure care plans to ensure ongoing environmental
protection.
