Task 5
Why I have chosen my genre
The genre that I have chosen to do is RnB. I have chosen this over pop magazines because pop is
mostly associated with younger (10 years or younger)girls and creating a magazine for this
specific target audience is out of my comfort zone as I do not know what they will be interested
in and what they like and dislike. I haven't chosen to do rock because I personally don’t like rock
music and I would prefer to make something that I enjoy listening to. I am not doing classic music
because I don’t know many classic artists or bands and would not know what the older audiences
would enjoy to read.
For these reasons, I have decided to choose RnB because it is the popular type of music out there
so if I include a famous singer like Drake, my magazine would be favoured and will be bought. As
this is a popular genre, I can use other magazines for ideas but try and make mine as unique as
possible.
strengths and weaknesses
RnB
Is listened to by a wide audience
A lot of existing RnB already out there so will have to make it different to them
Rock
Simple colour scheme
Easy to make it look overpowering (don’t make ti frightening)
Pop
Can use bright colours to attract the younger audiences
Overloading the page (too many pictures and sell lines)
Classic
Targets older audiences
Making it look boring
Ideas for magazine
names
Tunes
Albums
Hercules
Record
I have made up this name as tunes is related to
music so will be a big attention grabber. Tunes
also implies that the main focus of the magazine
will be on songs like new releases which is what
teenagers nowadays are into.
Gives the impression of old music as well as new
music as records where used in the older days.
Might interest older audiences to buy the
magazine as well so they can catch up on their
favourite bands when they were younger.
Makes the magazine sound powerful which
implies that it can be strong, in content, and
enjoyable to read.
I did have blitz on here but I decided to take it
off because I thought it was wrong to have it on
as I realised that was the name of the Germans
attacking and bombing England so I thought it
was inappropriate to have it as an option.
Also related to music magazines and will
make the audience think that they might
get a free album if they buy the magazine.
Ideas for articles
• Celeb gossip
• Games (word search and crosswords etc)
• Interviews
• Recent songs and albums
• New releases
• Secrets of a famous person
• Free gift
• Chance to win things
• Q and A of a famous person
Codes and conventions for mastheads
Needs to be the eye catching part of the magazine, this can be done by making it big and bold to make it stand
out and short as well so it can be remembered if the buyer wants to get the next issue.
It needs to represent the genre of the magazine. i.e if I was to do a rock magazine, I would make the letters all
jagged and sharp/pointy.
Needs to be at the top of the page so that it is obvious what the magazine will be about and what the name is.
Make it bright and colourful so it stands out fro amongst the rest.
How my masthead symbolizes genre and target
audience
TUNES
Tunes symbolizes my target audience as it used to be slang word used for a good song or track.
This word was commonly used with my target audience (old teenagers). This gives them the
impression that my magazine will be better than the others and they will be interested in to what
makes the magazine good and will buy it.
It is short and simple so that it is rememberedand is catchy. This is so they can create word of
mouth to friends and family to makes the viewer stats higher.
