More than 1.2 million people die in road accidents worldwide every year, accounting for 3-4% of gross national product lost. In India, road accidents increased from 2001-2009, with over 500,000 accidents and deaths each year. Road accidents are projected to become the fifth largest cause of death by 2030. Common causes of accidents include speeding, alcohol/drug use, vehicle overloading, and defective vehicles or roads. Problems in reducing accidents include inadequate infrastructure, corruption, and attitudes of citizens unwilling to follow traffic rules. Proposed solutions include improving infrastructure through road widening and planning, enforcing traffic laws, and increasing transparency to reduce corruption.
