Editor's Notes

  1. The RM Class is designed to support your learning and development during the first semester of your role as an RM. Through practical activities, reflections, projects, and discussion, you will learn more about your leadership through the lens of the Student Leadership Challenge (Kouzes & Posner) and you will deepen your understanding of Residential Foundations (our residential curriculum within University Housing).
  2. Review the syllabus with your class.
  3. Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership model has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals understand their leadership potential and develop as leaders. Based on more than 30 years of research on exactly what great leaders actually do, and distilled into five clear Practices, 10 Commitments, and 30 distinct behaviors of exemplary student leaders.
  4. Research question was “What did you do when you were at your personal best leading others?”
  5. Do you believe everyone has the potential to be a leader? If so, why? If not, why not? Everyone can be a leader, but people will make a choice about when they step up to lead based on the values they hold. For example, a student may not be the president of their organization, but can choose to demonstrate leadership behaviors on committees and groups that are part of the larger organization. They can start an initiative that makes a difference. People lead in different ways and at different times.
  6. Who is a leader you admire? Do you think you could learn to inspire others as much as they inspired you? How would you learn to do that? What obstacles could prevent you from learning to lead? - Leadership is a process that ordinary people use to bring forth the best in themselves and in others. It is a set of skills that is available to everyone.
  7. At the heart of leadership is the ability to connect with others, understand them, and engage them in pulling together for a shared dream for the future. Leaders understand that every relationship contributes to their ability to be successful.
  8. The instrument of the leader is himself/herself. Committing to leadership means committing to a personal journey of reflection.
  9. If you aspire to lead and you are willing to do the work, you can lead! It is a personal choice and lifelong commitment. What kind of leader do you aspire to be? What choices do you need to make to become a better leader?
  10. All leadership is based on one fundamental assumption: a leader matters. You can make a profound difference in the lives of your residents. To do that, you have to believe in yourself and your own capacity/skills. To those who are following a leader, that leader is the most important leader to them at that moment.
  11. This is the question asked by the Student Leadership Challenge research project.
