Critical reflection on a leadership event
1. What happened? (Background, brief description of events, specific leadership actions)
In 2019 I was the leader of a team for an international competition. The team was composed
of around 24 team members, and it was divided into 5 different areas, each with its own
coordinator. The coordinators reported to me the advances of the team, and weekly
meetings for each area were held.
2. What were the results? (Real or potential. Try to include both positive and negative
possibilities. Even if the event seemed clearly good or bad, consider unintended
consequences.)
The team underperformed and the main goals and objectives were not met. Though there
was a good integration in between team members and the deliverables that actually got
done, were of high quality.
3. Why did this happen? (Consider all possible factors, including the people and the situation)
First, that year was an emotional hurdle for me, one close mentor committed suicide and a
month after that, another died in an accident. This happened during the most critical months
of the project. Additionally, I was burning out fast due to the stress from my main
responsibilities besides the project (my career, and relationships). And lastly, the leadership
style that I adopted was not the adequate for some team, and situations that happened
along the way.
4. What class concepts are relevant to this situation? (Mention at least one concept from
class and how they can be used to interpret the situation.)
Leadership styles, support networks, and attitudes.
5. What did you learn from this? (Broader lessons that might apply to other situations or
problems.)
I learned the relevance of asking for help from my support network, to delegate and that I
needed to learn how to improve my leadership.
