Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Cloud Management Platform
A different type of resource pool. Traditional virtualized environments were built for enterprise apps and client-server compute. Scaling was hard (scaled up), overhead was high (1:hundreds) with significant penetration of proprietary vendor stacks.
Clouds are designed around next generation apps, big data and massive scale. Scaling is hortizontal, overhead is substantially lower (1:thousands) and open stacks and frameworks dominate.
The shift is having a profound impact on all companies but many are left confused on where to start. New mindsets and methodologies must be adopted.
Initial biggest drivers are simple value propositions
Security gets the headlines but it’s not the main blocker
That pressure often leads to loss of control. Traditional controls and barriers are gone, business lines are empowered with IT like never before.

Preventing what is an all-to-common problem we see when enterprises adopt cloud
This path often leads to lack of agility … stuck feeding an inefficient machine
Business agility is the true measure of cloud ROI … agile deployment

When IT gets involved … when this whole thing needs to come together
IT has not been involved in that adoption … don’t understand that you need automation on top of images … why image buildingAnyone that is doing anything at size and complexity, you are now tasked with doing that for a portfollio
Giving them an image and telling them to go install all the components is note that answer … machine image is only half way there … manually build, etc. They beat you to the punch on public cloud. … you’re back in game delivering value
