"Composite Railway Sleepers" - Recent developments, challenges and future pro...Md Saif Ahmed
Railways form the backbone of all economies, transporting goods, and passengers alike. Sleepers play a pivotal role in track performance and safety in rail transport. This study rigorously reviews the recent developments on composite sleepers and identifies the critical barriers to their widespread acceptance and applications. Currently the composite sleeper technologies that are available ranges from sleepers made with recycle plastic materials which contains short or no fibre to the sleepers that containing high volume of fibres. While recycled plastic sleepers are low cost, the major challenges of using this type of sleepers are their limited strength, stiffness and dynamic properties which in most cases, are incompatible with those of timber. On the other hand, the prohibitive cost of high fibre containing sleepers limit their widespread application. Moreover, limited knowledge on the historical long-term performance of these new and alternative materials restricts their application. Potential design approaches for overcoming the challenges in the utilisation and acceptance of composite sleeper technologies are also presented in this presentation.
An Experimental Study on Modification of Dense Graded Bituminous Mix Designijtsrd
Various problems on the roads have been frequently observed on flexible pavements like: potholes, rutting, shoving etc. In hot and developing countries like India, roads are affected by severed problems mentioned above, due to the water presence in the pavement, heavy traffic load, excessive no. of vehicles. Literature review lightens up on solution of these problems by modification of bitumen. To lighten this process, several measures may be effective, such as, use of better quality materials like waste plastic, motor oil, crumb rubber. This study proposes the utilization of waste materials i.e. waste plastic, crumb rubber and motor oil and check their suitability to mitigate theses defects of cracking, rutting, pothole etc. Marshal stability method is chosen to determine the stability and flow value for bitumen mix design. Individual effects of polythene, crumb rubber and motor oil is analysed first by varying the percentage of same with optimum bitumen content. And comprehensive effect of these three material has been also observed and discussed by plotting the graphs and it is found that Bitumen (5.5 %), Crumb Rubber (8%), Waste Plastic (6%) and Motor Oil (2%) gives highest stability and other properties values within the range given in MORTH. It is expected that this study would be useful to researchers and consultancies to construct the roads economically and long lasting servicing. Soil Stabilization Using Waste Materials in Sri Lankaijtsrd
The uses of automobiles are increasing day by day because of that the waste of tyres increases in Sri Lanka. Safer disposal of rubber tyre waste has become a challenging job in Sri Lanka. As a result of the improper way of disposal, there is a great damage to eco system like air pollution and aesthetic pollution. So that use of their basic properties in engineering applications are become prominent. This investigation has focused on the CBR of soil reinforced with randomly mixed shredded rubber tyre chips and the results will be compared with unreinforced samples. The optimal percentage value of shredded rubber tyre content in soil will be determined using the Standard proctor compaction test and CBR test. Increases in CBR value significantly reduce the total thickness of the pavement and hence the total cost involved in the road projects. H. L. S Sathik | D. De S. A LABORATORY STUDY ON ACID MODIFIED BITUMINOUS MIXES IN COMPARISON FOR RUTTIN...civejjour
The rapid growth in trafficload intensity, tire pressure and traffic volume has put a hugedemand on pavements to perform satisfactorily for the design period. A number of efforts are made in the past to develop pavement materials that helped in attaining longer serviceability. Most of these efforts were directed towards improving the design of bituminous mix through modified bituminous binders. In this context an attempt is made to evaluate rutting characteristics of conventional bitumen modified with Poly phosphoric Acid (PPA). Immersion Type Wheel Rutting Machine was used for evaluation of rutting characteristics and is considered as one of the major critical criteria for design of pavement. Poly phosphoric Acid (PPA) is added as modifier to virgin bitumen (VG – 30) at regular interval of 1% up to 6% to the weight of Bitumen. Bituminous Concrete of Grade-II is considered for Analysis. Slabs of 400X300X50mm are prepared for evaluation of rutting characteristics. Stability, density, voids and flow parameters were determined using marshal test method for virgin and PPA modified mix. The result of immersion wheel rutting explains that acid modified binders resist more rutting compared to virgin binders. Acid modified mixes at 3% optimum performs better in rutting characteristics when tested in laboratory for induced applied pressures, load and number of passes.

On the greater part of streets, ordinary bitumen performs agreeably. In any case, high activity power, expanding hub load and day by day and regular varieties in temperature of the asphalt prompt an early improvement of misery side effects like raveling, rutting, undulations, breaking, dying, and potholing of bituminous surfaces. Subsequently the heap bearing limits of the street is to be expanded. Adaptable asphalts bitumen streets involve the significant segment of all surfaced streets. In India, it is evaluated that more than 33 need kilometers of street exists and out of which of which around half is surfaced. Street transport has obtained prevailing position among the different methods of transportation framework because of its adaptability, way to entryway administration, unwavering quality and speed. In India, street transport conveys near 90 of traveler movement and 70 of cargo transport. In India, dominant part of the asphalts is bituminous since they expend lesser beginning cost when contrasted and inflexible asphalts i.e. bond solid asphalts. Examinations in India and nations abroad have uncovered that properties of bitumen and bituminous blends can be enhanced to meet prerequisites of asphalt with the consolidation of specific added substances or mix of added substances. These added substances are called Bitumen Modifiers and the bitumen premixed with these modifiers is known as altered bitumen. Adjusted bitumen is relied upon to give higher existence of surfacing up to 100 contingent on level of alteration and sort of added substances and change process utilized. Distinctive sorts of modifiers utilized are Polymers, Normal Elastic and Morsel Elastic. 3. INTRODUCTION
the consumption of plastic to rise 8 million tons/annum during the year 2009
Once used plastic and crumb rubber materials are thrown out or incinerated. so that
pollute the land and the air.
Use of plastic waste (LDPE) and Crumb Rubber in the construction of flexible
pavement is gaining importance.
Marshal method of bituminous mix design was carried out for varying percentages of
LDPE and Crumb Rubber to determine the different mix design characteristics.
5. LITERATURE
The principle of this test is that Marshall stability is the resistance to plastic flow of
cylindrical specimens of a bituminous mixture loaded on the lateral surface. It is the load
carrying capacity of the mix at 60 C and is measured in kg. The apparatus needed to
determine Marshall stability of bituminous mixture is: i) Marshall stability apparatus and ii)
Balance and water bath.
Low density polyethylene (low density polyethylene, LDPE) is a thermoplastic made from
petroleum
Crumb rubber is recycled rubber produced from automotive and truck scrap tires. During
the recycling process, steel and tire cord (fluff) are removed, leaving tire rubber with a
granular consistency

12. • The study on the use of LDPE and CRMB reveals that the Marshal
Stability value, which is the strength parameter of SDBC has shown
increasing trend and the maximum values have increased by about 25
% by addition of LDPE and CRMB. The density of the mix has also
increased in both the cases of LDPE and CRMB when compared with
60/70 grade bitumen.

• This will provide more stable and durable mix for the flexible
pavements. The serviceability and resistance to moisture will also be
better when compared to the conventional method of construction2
• This study will have a positive impact on the environment as it will
reduce the volume of plastic waste to be disposed off by
incineration and land filling. It will not only add value to
plastic waste but will develop a technology, which is eco-friendly.
