John Seely Brown notes that simply introducing new teaching technologies into a classroom is not enough - new teaching practices must also be developed to make full use of the technologies. A conference presentation describes an invented method called "Web 2 Kung Fu" that fosters community and helps see problems from multiple viewpoints. A chapter cites research finding benefits of collaborative writing such as improved learning experiences and the ability to construct and acquire new information. However, it is noted that while collaborative platforms are available, students do not always use them for collaboration. Types of writing in wikis are identified, ranging from students not interacting to substantive co-construction of content. Communities of practice are defined as groups who collectively learn through shared experiences.
