There are two types of reproductive cells, the ovum and sperm, which contain genetic information from both parents. Conception occurs when the ovum and sperm join to form a zygote, which begins dividing and grows as it travels to the uterus. The zygote becomes an embryo that attaches to the uterus wall for protection and floats in amniotic fluid inside the amniotic sac for protection. A placenta then forms to provide oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the growing fetus via the umbilical cord until birth at the end of the ninth month of pregnancy.
