During the first trimester, the embryo's skin, nervous system and other organs begin to form. A fluid-filled sac protects the embryo, and the placenta and yolk sac develop to nourish it. By the end of the first trimester, the fetus has all its organs and can move its body. In the second trimester, the fetus grows substantially in length and weight, and its heartbeat and face become detectable. By the third trimester, the fetus' bones are fully formed, it stores its own nutrients, positions head-down in the uterus, and continues gaining weight until birth.
