Evaluating and Selecting a Learning Management SystemMonica Rysavy
This presentation was given at the 2012 AECT Conference. It discusses how to evaluate and select a Learning Management System (LMS) based upon an organization’s needs and learning goals. This presentation illustrates how to identify the learning needs of an organization, compare these needs with available LMSs, select potential LMS options, and evaluate these options based upon a presenter-provided rubric. It also shares emerging trends with Learning Management Systems.
e-Learning Management System : a Critical StudyKaustav Saha
The success of the e-learning paradigm observed in recent times has created a growing demand for e-learning systems in universities and other educational institutions, which has led to the development of a number of either commercial or open-source eLearning Management Systems (eLMS). How they work or, what they are doing? These are some new problems arising that demands appropriate solutions. The present discussion initially highlights certain distinctive features of e-learning management systems. Basically the idea of adaptive e-learning is being facilitated through the use, implementation and installation of various open source or commercial software. Such software for their operation requires specific platforms. Because of multiplicity of platforms and approaches for systems implementation, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage or compare them. Each new LMS presents its own learning model. How to compare different e-learning platforms, and on what basis to choose the most adequate one, is a task of ever increasing importance. Thus a comparative study has been used to enumerate the utility and effectiveness of some e-learning software like Moodle, Sakai, Atutor, Caroline and Dokeos. However, with implementation of different eLMS modules certain barriers have evolved. Issues related to these barriers would be addressed in the concluding section of this discussion. Besides this, the conclusion also provides insights in regard of what lies in future for the idea of e-learning management systems, and how can its drawbacks be resolved.
Learning management System Techniques By Ravinder Tulsianiravindertulsiani1
When starting with a Learning Management System evaluation, it is more important for an organization to determine key goals for the LMS project which has straight connection with your organizational goals. It should not only think about your persent goals but also think about your all future requirements
SUNY Purchase and SUNY Delhi have begun a shared services project, where Purchase College provide Mahara ePortfolios to Delhi faculty and students through their Moodle LMS, while Delhi provides OpenMeetings and Big Blue Button meeting services to Purchase faculty and students through their Moodle system.

The formal structures supporting education haven't changed appreciably in the past several decades. The world continues to move at a dizzying pace and knowledge & information are created faster than ever. Aggregators like search engines and social filters allow for self discovery, autodidacta, and expansive learning beyond the confines of any static medium that preceded the world wide web. Unfortunately, these tools have created a host of other problems including perverse self-filtering, misinformation, and the quandary of distinguishing signal from profuse noise. This talk will share original research from the IIT Institute of Design on homeschoolers, adults in macrobiotic cooking groups, scrapbookers, and girl scouts. This presentation was delivered at the 2012 Blackboard Developer's Conference in New Orleans. It details lessons learned when creating custom content types that survive course copy.
A common Building Block task is to create a new custom content type in Blackboard. The new OpenDatabase allows you to easily create content with much greater functionality and awareness of other parts of Blackboard. You can even tidy up properly afterwards. Surely copying this content wouldn't prove too tricky? I was so wrong. This session explains how Blackboard expect this to happen, names the (undocumented) APIs and walks you through the lifecycle of a custom content item. The open source SignUp List building block is used as a case study.

Moodle: using an open learning management system to support student learningKeith Landa
2010 SUNY Freedonia Teaching and Learning conference - "Universal Design for Learning: Accessible and Assistive Technologies to Enhance Student Learning"
Session description: Over the past 18 months, Purchase College has migrated from Blackboard to Moodle for our campus learning management system. Our decision was partially driven by the lower total costs for Moodle as an open source product and our desire to avoid the risks and lack of control associated with commercial applications. Our primary consideration however was that Moodle provides a pedagogically stronger learning platform, and its openness allows us to integrate it with other learning applications that faculty would like to use to promote student engagement.
This session will focus on the pedagogical aspects of Moodle as a learning platform. We will briefly discuss the process and findings Purchase College used to develop a consensus among faculty, students and technology staff to switch to Moodle. Participants will then spend the bulk of the session in a directed exploration of the diverse learning activities in Moodle that promote student engagement and learning, to facilitate discussion of how Moodle compares to ANGEL and Blackboard. We will examine examples of how Moodle’s open architecture allows it to integrate with external Web 2.0 applications, and finally discuss options for no-cost hosted Moodle solutions that will allow participants to evaluate Moodle for their campuses.

Extending the breadth and depth of interaction using gamificationMalcolm Murray
A presentation given at the 2018 Blackboard Teaching & Learning Conference in Manchester.
We took a standard online Blackboard course and offered postgraduate students an alternative - the same content wrapped in a gamified "skin" developed in partnership with students. This alternative UI was designed to offer more scaffolding and measures of progress, and foster a set of competition using three large groups (based on their Faculty). Students were free to choose either format of course. In this session we look at patterns in the choices made, the degree of interaction with the course and its content and some unexpected consequences of this experimental design. Time will be spent explaining the design of the gamified skin (its support/dependence on standard Blackboard features) and the rationale behind these choices. A few other gamified approaches will be introduced and then the session will conclude with a discussion of whether gamified approaches could and should be used more widely in higher education.

Student feedback is a hot topic in higher education, with students demanding more of it, quicker. This session discusses a project that attempted to define the concept of feedback from both a student and faculty perspective and then develop workflows and possible extensions to Blackboard to improve the creation, delivery and learning from feedback.

This presentation (delivered in Las Vegas in July 2011 at the Blackboard Developers Conference) reflects on the work of 3 students who spent a summer learning and developing building blocks. Their project topics were provided by faculty. The experience highlights problems faced by novice building block developers and how to overcome these. It also provides suggestions for suitable and unsuitable test environments and ends with pointers for what constitutes a realistic (deliverable and maintainable) project, some of which come directly from the mouths of the students.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Stress the word “Towards” – this presentation will not provide a complete answer to the set essay – that would be too easy!
You have been set a pretty challenging assignment which draws on knowledge well beyond the boundaries of your course
Some students have been contacting me for informationI admire your initiative, but this approach isn’t scalable and I need to be fair and treat every student in the same way.I didn’t set the assessment, or even get to see it before it went out. There are a few issues that you’ll need to discuss with Neil.I am, however, very interested in your thoughts and findings!
This presentation – available on slideshare – link in duo.
Slides and extra material available on duo – including links to things I think you’ll have trouble finding…In the Teaching Material – Term 2 Area
Take a few slides just to remind ourselves what we have to submit at the end of the day
I think we need to have some common understanding of these before we can look at examples
Note that duo is based on BlackboardWe will look at these systems and consider the biases we bring to this process!
I could (should) be the only person in the room who hasn’t read it– applying these frameworks is your job!Remember I don’t teach or mark this work!.I am a Geographer not an Economist by training
Others? Distance Learners? Alumini? Supported Progression Students
Plenty of others – course structure, course, institution and system roles, group support, blogs, wikis, turnitin, collaboration, etc
Anyone studied Education? Know what it means? No? Use your technology…
Race you?
One common approachLower order thinking skills (base) to higher order skills (peak) – what can students do in a given LMS?
This has been used to categorize a range of tools – don’t necessary agree with this one, but you get the idea.We could apply this to LMSs…
Which one(s) are most suitable for Durham?Place the available tools/functionality along these lines
Anyone studied Education? Know what it means? No? Use your technology…
Middleware is very important, standards may help here.Uptime, charging model, maintenance options, backup, archiving, restoration and disaster recovery, extensibilitybrowser & OS support, branding, user community, consultancy, skills required, etc.
An aside. My title, not an officially recognized term! This is one of the reasons why standards are important.
In no particular order, lets look at support for standards – the LMS is maturing now.
Anyone studied Education? Know what it means? No? Use your technology…
You might also want to look at these breaking them down into capital and recurring costsAlso which are known, predictable and which may be open-ended (e.g. disk usage). Banding charges?
Remember some software may not be for sale!
Many prices will not be available on the web or could be subject to a non disclosure agreement. That will making the cost comparison almost impossible – sorry…
Free as in beer, or free as in…..?Is software ever free? What is the real cost? If you don’t pay for the software or support, what do you pay for?
A quick look at some of the systems discussed
Start with those specified in the question(I wouldn’t have chosen some them) others are suggestions – first other LMS offerings- Then the MOOCs – could they fit?
Links to all these systems can be found in duo – relax!
Content is made available to users, it can be arranged into folders
The ‘My Blackboard’ overlay exposes a range of system wide toolsThese include cross-institutional spaces such as these chocolate-based ones
Staff can see the progress of students using tools such as the Grade Centre and Retention Centre
Student view – home pageCourses below
Course view – as a member of staff
Grade report
Screenshots from some investigations carried out by staff from the Business School. It also organizes materials by courses and has a pretty standard navigation menu down the LHS.Within the materials section, content can be added and grouped into folders
Within a given folder, links are displayed to individual content items. Not much space for scaffolding/instructions…
You can see which staff teach on the course (note the use of US Academic English in the interface) and send them internal messages or emails.I am not listed here as I was enrolled in this course as a student.
Students have their own home page which allows them access to a range of tools, such as this system-wide blog.
Khan Academy began as a tool for helping people learnMaths. Unlike the others it is not available for use as a separate install. It has a lot of content, particularly mathematical. The interface is interesting – there is a lot of gaming theory applied here to encourage people to interact and keep interacting. This example shows a question testing the user’s knowledge of long division (if not spelling).
Students are given groups of tests known as a stack. After completing a set, the feedback is tailored according to their performance, giving learners some control over their rate of progress
Progress is rewarded with badges, which can be single or cumulative.Similar to Mozilla OpenBadges initiative
It offers an alternative map based display of topics and their relationship.Personally I’m not convinced that this is very easy to navigate or understand – but you might feel differently.
Many others are available, but here are three more common ones.
One think the MOOCs are not short of is information about themselves!Could they be used to replace duo?
This graph also references SAKAI – doesn’t have a large market share in the UK
