Winter Maintenance Management System Bavaria
The extreme seasonal weather conditions during the winter months in Bavaria present a serious challenge to road maintenance services in the region. Maintaining the flow of traffic throughout the road network requires a winter maintenance service that operates effectively and with foresight. One of its main tasks is to coordinate the 600 public and 700 private service vehicles deployed to keep traffic moving along Bavaria's 22,000 kilometres of roads.
Together with Germany's National Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst), we integrate and distribute reliable and highly actual weather information and forecasts. This presentation shows how FME Server is used to integrate weather information and forecasts from different web services almost in real-time. The data provided by FME Server is used in a web-based information system that is part of the daily work of the road authorities.

UAVs and FME: Powering Your Drone and Its Data with FME
This presentation will look at some typical UAV support workflows where FME can help both with flight planning and post processing. Examples include examining flight restrictions and obstacles to determine where it is safe to fly. For post processing, FME's tools for managing imagery will be examined, including georeferencing and mosaicking. The results from local test flights on a low-cost UAV platform will be reviewed. We will wrap with a summary of some customer applications where FME has been used to support UAV operations, and some of the challenges and opportunities that this rapidly growing industry presents in the near future.
Database Comparison and ArcMap Data Driven Pages
When working with databases of large sewer systems, it is important to document the changes to the database over time. Ramboll have developed a tool in FME, that not only document changes between database versions, but also generates maps of the updated objects using Data Driven Pages in ArcMap. The comparison tells which objects and attributes that have changed, keeping both the old and new attribute value. When generating the maps, the most critical attributes are labelled for a quick visual comparison. But for deeper insight of the changes, all updated attributes are saved in the comparison database.

While recently converting their electric distribution sources, PG&E included an initiative to convert their GIS data into a standalone ArcSchematics model. The schematics model was developed to support the engineering group as well as PG&E‘s DMS outage management system and was tailored to provide a geo-schematic representation following major roadways to enhance locating of key primary system features. Software was developed to allow daily GIS updates to feed the schematics model directly thus greatly reducing latency between the two systems. Maintenance of schematics consists of daily executed minor whitespace management edits ensuring ease of use.

A number of national mapping and environment agencies use FME for managing their flood data, weather data and disaster response resources. Typical disaster response workflows and formats will also be reviewed, including how FME works with DEMs, imagery, time series data and live web feeds to integrate real time with base map data and provide the results planners need to respond effectively. FME's strong support for open standards related to emergency response will also be discussed.

This document outlines a project between Middle Tennessee EMC and SSP Innovations to establish relationships between transformers and service locations in their GIS database, aggregate consumption data from their CIS system, and create reports and maps visualizing transformer loading. The project was conducted in three phases: 1) establishing maintainable relationships in GIS, 2) integrating and aggregating CIS consumption data, and 3) developing reports and maps in ArcGIS Online. This provided operations and engineering with real-time field access to transformer loading data to help evaluate capacity and efficiency.

In the past MTEMC has oversized their transformers across the utility due to a lack of consumption data in GIS. MTEMC joined SSP Innovations to auto-load SAP consumption data, perform aggregation for peak usage, and to visualize the data in ArcGIS Online via a thematic map. Field troubleshooters use Collector for ArcGIS to view the load profile for any transformer showing peak usage against the transformer size. This results in cost savings and has generated drivers for many other uses of the data and of ArcGIS Online.

ETAP - pde gis - Data Exchange

The systems supporting ParcelMap BC use authoritative sources to deliver continued daily updates to efficiently maintain the currency and improve the accuracy of each cadastral parcel representation in British Columbia.
Creating New Channels for Outage Reporting
This document summarizes a presentation about how Connexus Energy implemented a new outage reporting system using a web portal and middleware. Customers can now log into the portal to report outages, alleviating the need for phone calls and reducing outage reporting time. The solution reused existing middleware and integrated outage reports into the Outage Management System using a standardized format. 104th Avenue Corridor Plan
The City of Edmonton is now implementing the vision and policies of the Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) for the 104 Avenue Corridor between 111 Street and 123 Street, along the future alignment of the west leg of the Valley LRT line. The first step of the ARP implementation involves rezoning the Corridor to bring land use regulations into alignment with the new policy.
The rezoning of the Corridor involves creating a set of unique zones that align with the new policy and respond to current conditions. An analysis of the current conditions was undertaken to provide intelligence that would inform the zones density, height, and floor area ratio. In order to get a better understanding of those conditions analysis was done on land use, existing zoning, building ages, residential tenure, existing dwelling counts and residential density, tax assessed values, and commercial square footage. Each parcels development potential was then measured by allocating a numerical factor to each element and devising a weighted formula. The result was that each parcel was assigned a redevelopment potential factor and thereby providing valuable information to base decision making upon.

You leave the office in the late afternoon to go home. But that doesn’t mean that work has to stop. Once you leave, make FME go to work for you. At the Surveyor General’s office, we let FME work all night. By the time we come back the following day, FME has pulled together data from across the country, from diverse databases, de-normalized database information for business intelligence, and identified all the errors that have spilled into the databases the previous day. FME: Not Just for ETL
FME is typically used to exchange data, but it can also be used as a powerful tool to automate the transformation of spatial data into technical CAD diagrams. In this presentation I will show how I embedded FME into an application process to create on-the-fly AutoCAD diagrams for communication manholes. This involves determining the local spatial reference, calculating the extents required, clipping the data, creating labels for the data, filtering the data to set line colors and styles, and then exporting the file using linked workspaces.
Well Directional Survey Processing in FME
Directional surveys for wells are typically received with data points represented as angles (inclination, azimuth) and depths. This data needs to be converted to Cartesian coordinates for mapping or 3D visualization. This presentation demonstrates the use of FME to replicate the formula from the "Minimum-Curvature Method" to convert well surveys for mapping purposes.

Smith Electric Vehicles collects large amounts of telemetry data from its fleet of commercial electric vehicles. It was initially storing this data in a MySQL database, but faced issues with availability, capacity, and processing the data quickly enough to meet business needs. It addressed these issues by implementing a message queue to buffer incoming data, sharding/partitioning the data across multiple databases and tables, optimizing queries and indexes, and moving some processing to the cloud. These changes allowed it to reliably process over 1.5 billion data points per day and provide live dashboards and export reports.
ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing - Lessons Learned
With the release of Esri's new ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing (APR) tools in 2017, we got to work immediately deploying the new extensions for our clients. This presentation will focus on SCANA Energy's APR implementation and lessons learned throughout the deployment. Topics will range from source data preparation, UPDM extensions, APR architecture, installation, licensing, APR core data loading and end user data editing workflows.
FME Around the World

As common sense would suggest, weather has a definite impact on traffic. But how much? And under what circumstances? Can we improve traffic (congestion) prediction given weather data? Predictive traffic is envisioned to significantly impact how driver’s plan their day by alerting users before they travel, find the best times to travel, and over time, learn from new IoT data such as road conditions, incidents, etc. This talk will cover the traffic prediction work conducted jointly by IBM and the traffic data provider. As a part of this work, we conducted a case study over five large metropolitans in the US, 2.58 billion traffic records and 262 million weather records, to quantify the boost in accuracy of traffic prediction using weather data. We will provide an overview of our lambda architecture with Apache Spark being used to build prediction models with weather and traffic data, and Spark Streaming used to score the model and provide real-time traffic predictions. This talk will also cover a suite of extensions to Spark to analyze geospatial and temporal patterns in traffic and weather data, as well as the suite of machine learning algorithms that were used with Spark framework. Initial results of this work were presented at the National Association of Broadcasters meeting in Las Vegas in April 2017, and there is work to scale the system to provide predictions in over a 100 cities. Audience will learn about our experience scaling using Spark in offline and streaming mode, building statistical and deep-learning pipelines with Spark, and techniques to work with geospatial and time-series data.

UPDM & APR Implementation for Gas Transmission
With the release of Esri's ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing (APR) in early 2017, Memphis Light, Gas & Water (MLGW) identified the extensions as desirable tools to manage their gas transmission assets. The key driver for MLGW was the ability to utilize software within the Esri stack for editing linear referenced pipelines, viewing and reporting. This presentation will focus on MLGW’s APR implementation and include elements around the hardware/software architecture, Utility Pipeline Data Model, data migration across multiple sources, implementation of the Esri software and creation of a viewing/reporting application within Web App Builder.

I will discuss current research on the MapGraph platform. MapGraph is a new and disruptive technology for ultra-fast processing of large graphs on commodity many-core hardware. On a single GPU you can analyze the bitcoin transaction graph in .35 seconds. With MapGraph on 64 NVIDIA K20 GPUs, you can traverse a scale-free graph of 4.3 billion directed edges in .13 seconds for a throughput of 32 Billion Traversed Edges Per Second (32 GTEPS). I will explain why GPUs are an interesting option for data intensive applications, how we map graphs onto many-core processors, and what the future looks like for the MapGraph platform.
MapGraph provides a familiar vertex-centric abstraction, but its GPU acceleration is 100s of times faster than main memory CPU-only technologies and up to 100,000 times faster than graph technologies based on MapReduce or key-value stores such as HBase, Titan, and Accumulo. The grid-based infrastructure enables large-scale scientific applications to be run on distributed resources and coupled in innovative ways. However, in practice, grid resources are not very easy to use for the end-users who have to learn how to generate security credentials, stage inputs and outputs, access grid-based schedulers, and install complex client software. There is an imminent need to provide transparent access to these resources so that the end-users are shielded from the complicated details, and free to concentrate on their domain science. Scientific applications wrapped as Web services alleviate some of these problems by hiding the complexities of the back-end security and computational infrastructure, only exposing a simple SOAP API that can be accessed programmatically by application-specific user interfaces. However, writing the application services that access grid resources can be quite complicated, especially if it has to be replicated for every application. The Zero-ETL Approach: Enhancing Data Agility and Insight

Chris Jones, Director of Product Management at BrainChip , presents the “Temporal Event Neural Networks: A More Efficient Alternative to the Transformer” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices.
