Our Arts, Our Culture: That’s What It Means to Be a Filipino
What is the relevance of the study of Philippine Culture and Arts to the teacher’s area of
specialization?
This life is ever so challenging as with the world is ever fast changing so as for schools to
be able to cope up with the fast track pace of this revolutionize step of the way either societal or
technological change there must be something that needs to be done in the way lessons in schools
are delivered. With the changes that come along the way, we must all realize that we are still
Filipinos and must not forget who we are. That our culture needed not only to be preserve but
rather must be inculcated in every student its relevance to their being a Filipino. Thus it is
imperative to integrate Philippine Culture and Arts in every lesson, whatever subject area it may
be. With the experiences the students go through the lessons in a specific subject area integrated
with Philippine Culture and Arts, they do not just enjoy but at the same time they would learn to
love their very own culture and further developed them into a citizen that preserves in their own
way and practice the culture with respect and love. It not only identifies their being a Filipino but
it gives them the entirety of their being a Filipino.
As a teacher who specialized in Technology and Livelihood Education I found the study
of Philippine Culture and Arts very vital. It is because I believe that in teaching my students with
the lessons I am giving them, I am also reshaping them into something or somebody of worth. That
one day when they finish schooling they could be somebody who is successful in their own field.
The lessons would not only edify them to attain their goals and objectives in life, but they would
be motivated towards a lifelong learning. With the integration of Philippine Culture and Arts in
my lesson I know that I am teaching them not only to value our own culture but also teach them
of how it came to be. The processes and concepts in the existence of our very own culture and arts
embodied in it the basic traditional values and practices that pave a way for every Filipino to
succeed in whatever field they are into. That is why I found the study of Philippine Culture and
Arts very important not as a standalone subject but a way to introduce our specialized lesson in a
very meaningful way, that would not only enhance them to become academically well versed but
also made them able to undertake their goals and dreams in life as an efficient and effective person
as a whole.
