Our Arts, Our Culture: That’s What It Means To Be A Filipino
Have you assessedthe condition of arts and culture in your area today? And what is your
government doing for arts and culture in your area?
Art and culture in Ozamiz seem to have deteriorated. Many among the Ozamiznons are not
aware of the arts and culture that Ozamiznon have. I have to admit that even myself, don’t know
much about our very own arts and culture, only through the National Commission for Culture and
Arts that I felt the need to know about these things. And it is really sad to note of. I can’t even find
any reason why is it that we lack such interest of knowing our own cultural identity. It seems not
to matter much for us. I just hope there is still a chance to recover what is worth knowing of. Only
with the Cultural Education program that I felt the urge to not only know, but also take part in
informing people of our very own arts and culture. It is indeed very important to know why we are
doing things the way we do, for someday when our children would ask, we might not be able to
give the answer. Is it not so odd that we could not even recognize our own art form or even identify
our own cultural practice? It is therefore evident in our place Ozamiz that arts and culture has not
been given much importance. During the time when we were given a task related to Ozamiz
cultural icon through this Cultural Education Program, we went to the tourism office and I was
really disappointed to find out that there is nothing much we can find when it comes to information
related to arts and culture that we were looking for. The tourism office even does not look
appealing or even pleasing enough to be considered an office. The place was disgusting, it smells
awful. And if employees are asked of information relevant to the work they have, they can’t even
give precise answer. That’s what is going on with our very own area. I could therefore say that the
government have not done much to preserve our very own arts and culture.
