This reflection paper discusses enhancing curriculum in Philippine schools in response to global and societal changes. It summarizes an article that argues curriculum programs need to be upgraded at all levels to expose learners to experiences that foster lifelong learning and allow them to cope with the modern world. An ideal enhanced curriculum would be computer-based, environment-focused, research-oriented, technology-enriched, value-laden, community-involved, and industry-linked. However, the reflection notes there is a mismatch between graduates' skills and degrees due to factors like parental pressure, peer influence, and cost of living considerations, rather than students' inherent skills and interests. It concludes an ideal curriculum alone may not be enough and alternative ways must be

Enhancing Curriculum in Philippine Schools
in Response to Global and Community Challenges
Hagos, L.C. and Dejarme, E.G., Our Lady of Fatima University, Philippines
This life is ever so challenging as with the world is ever fast changing so as for schools to
be able to cope up with the fast track pace of this revolutionize step of the way either societal or
technological change there must be something that needs to be done in the way lessons in
schools are delivered. That’s what this article is specifically talking about. Upgrading the
curricular programs in all levels, in which the curriculum must have to be geared towards social
and technological advancement. So that learners would be exposed to set of learning experiences
that would generate lifelong learning, for them to cope up with the needs of the modern world.
Consideration on enhancing the curriculum design is of great advantage not only to every
institution but for the whole community it serves. The curriculum change considers many
factors. Indeed they specifically provide differing curricular programs that cater to the
competencies and skills of every learner. With the ideals of realistic changes of the curriculum
for the 21st
century the study envisioned of the following: computer-based, environment-focused,
research-oriented, technology-enriched, value-laden, community-involved, and industry-linked.
All are equally significant in achieving and transforming graduates who would not only become
academically well verse but also made them able to undertake their goals and dreams in life as an
efficient and effective person as a whole.
The study is ideal since information is based on studies and theories. However, for me
this study is all in vain when the target learners are not reached. Reality check there is mismatch
among the graduates with the skills they have. Few reasons I find very vital in pursuing a college
degree. First among it is where parental consent is always considered in the selection of degree
to pursue in college, thus no longer considering the inherent skill of the learner. Once the parent
chose the degree that they wish their student would pursue, then they would force the student to
enroll even if it does not suit the skill and interest. Second thing would be peer pressure where
the high school graduate would go with the flow of the friends’ chosen degree for them to belong

to a group. Making them confident being in new surrounding knowing that they have people they
already know, is there to go through along the way. Third is the cost of living, for high school
graduates chose to enroll to a degree where the family budget could just afford. All this are
simple to grasp, yet is has a pronounced impact on producing the quality graduates that we wish
to have.
To all of this that is evident and real in this community we are living, how could an ideal
curriculum program be reliable in coping up with the changes and the realities of this world?
Could it still take its way to bridge the gap between the real and ideal world. We’re not blind to
the realities of this world and it would not be that easy to bring about the changes that we tend to
impose. There are standards in which the realities of this world could not cope. By enhancing the
curriculum is not all that must be considered in building the nation. Furthermore, we hope for a
brighter future that lies ahead of the generations to come. Enhancing the curriculum and also
considering alternative ways to reach out to every Filipino the need to pursue the rightful degree
that would augment their inherent competencies and develop their skills, for them to be one of
the new breed of Filipinos, a product of the enhance curriculum with a competitive skill and have
the lifelong learning.
