HXR 2016: Improving Care Experiences through Human-Centered Design - Jonathan...HxRefactored
Innovative ideas are everywhere in healthcare these days. But how do we go from rough ideas, to a clear strategic vision, to actually bringing ideas to life? What does the process actually look like? From a brand new cancer center designed by patients for patients, to a 24/7 virtual clinic co-designed with the nurses who would run it, this session will discuss how human-centered design plays out in the real world.
A look at how WEA Trust's partnership with Amwell provides a convenient and cost-effective way to see a doctor from anywhere. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
League Health Plan - Harmony Care Managementweatrust
Harmony Care Management provides a member-centric approach to medical management through establishing trusting relationships and taking a holistic view of members' care. It performs utilization management to ensure members receive only appropriate and cost-effective care in the right setting. For example, sleep studies done in the home may yield better results for members than those done in a sleep clinic. The document also introduces Christina Salm, a Harmony nurse with 20 years of experience across various medical fields who helps enhance the care management program.
League Health Plan - Reclaiming Healthcareweatrust
WEA Trust is reclaiming healthcare by focusing on providing high quality, affordable, and appropriate care for its members. This includes carefully selecting physicians and systems that provide good value, denying unnecessary or inappropriate care, working with providers to standardize care, and being smarter about healthcare spending through data analytics. The Trust also seeks to empower patients and anticipate their future needs. It aims to steward resources well by changing how hospitals are paid and reducing waste. The pharmacy department further delivers value through ensuring low net drug costs, formulary management, and specialty drug strategies that balance costs with safety.
Patient experience is closely related to clinical effectiveness and safety. Organizations that are more patient-centered have better outcomes. Improved communication between doctors and patients leads to greater medication compliance and self-management of chronic conditions. Anxiety and fear can delay healing. While terms like "experience" and "satisfaction" are sometimes used interchangeably, they actually refer to different concepts - experience refers to aspects of care, satisfaction is an evaluation of feelings, and outcomes refer to the effect on quality of life. There are information gaps around patient experience in pathways of care, community services, social care, and specific clinical conditions.
Health and finance are more and more interconnected. Medical expenses are the number one reason for bankruptcy in the US and health is noted as the highest expense in retirement. We know that over half of Americans can’t afford a $400 emergency and yet more and more consumers have high deductible health plans which require more cash out of their pocket than before. The lack of transparency in the system can lead people to be unaware of expenses coming their way, not understand the bills when they come, and not understand their plan and their ultimate financial responsibility. This can lead people to fund medical debt on credit cards and even avoid treatment because they can’t afford the expense. Financial products like HSAs are designed to support consumers in planning for and affording health expenses and can even reduce their taxable income and provide a long-term savings and investment vehicle, but many people are not aware or do not use them as they are designed. In addition, the stress associated with financial volatility can add to an individual’s stress and can actually cause or exacerbate the health problems they face.
This area is a crucial one to be aware of and to address in the work we do across the design and innovation community in health. There are many opportunities for those across the health system from payer to provider to benefits administrator and employer to help people understand and manage the financial aspects of health. This panel will help us to explore the concept of financial wellbeing as it pertains to health planning and navigation, opening our eyes to the obstacles and opportunities present.
Shifting landscapes: Establishing and maintaining brand identity in an era of...Modern Healthcare
As the healthcare system continues its unprecedented trend of consolidation, driven by factors such as the rapid move to value-based care, many hospitals and health systems wonder how a merger or acquisition might affect their hard-earned brand identity and reputation. The document discusses using mobile apps and technology to create a more patient-centered healthcare system. It describes how apps can provide patients with healthcare information, facilitate communication between patients and providers, and help educate patients. Quality measures for healthcare can be improved by giving patients a more direct role in their care and accessing feedback through their app usage and behaviors. The document presents examples of potential apps, like one that helps asthma patients track their conditions and medications. Overall, the goal is to empower patients and turn them into active customers through mobile technologies.

Planning and specification of Intensive Care UnitsAchi Kushnir PMP
This presentation has been designed to give the reader an overview in relation to the different aspects that are to be considered when planning and designing a new intensive care unit within a hospital
ICU design requires specialized infrastructure to care for critically ill patients. An ICU contains a patient care zone with private rooms or beds equipped for monitoring and treatment. It also includes clinical support zones for medical staff, unit support zones for administration and staff areas, and family support zones. Proper ICU design supports the integrated care of high-risk patients through features like isolation rooms, telemedicine capabilities, and family accommodations. Experienced consultants can help design ICUs that optimize outcomes, performance and costs according to evidence-based best practices.
This document outlines guidelines for organizing intensive care units (ICUs) at different levels of a hospital. It discusses ICU levels I-III and their recommended features. Level I ICUs are for small hospitals and provide basic monitoring and short-term care. Level II ICUs have expanded capabilities and staff training. Level III ICUs provide the highest level of multisystem care and technology. The document also covers ICU unit design considerations, including patient area layout, noise levels, nursing stations, and necessary equipment and utilities. Staffing guidelines recommend intensivists to lead the team along with residents, nurses, respiratory therapists and other support staff tailored to the ICU's needs and capabilities.
Reinsurance involves insurance companies insuring each other's risks. There are two main types of reinsurance - facultative, which applies to individual risks, and treaty, which applies to a company's entire book of business. Reinsurance can be proportional, where the reinsurer takes a share of each policy, or non-proportional, where the reinsurer covers losses over a certain amount. The reinsurance market in India is dominated by GIC, the sole domestic reinsurer, which reinsures a portion of policies with international reinsurers. Some challenges for reinsurers in the Indian market include higher premium rates and a lack of desirable quotes from Indian reinsurers for small deals.

Keynote presentation — A systems rethink: Healthcare innovation through the prism of human-centred services
Dr. Peter Jones, Associate Professor, Strategic Foresight and Innovation MDES program, OCAD University, and author of Design for Care: Innovating Healthcare Experience
Dr. Jones presents an emerging view of healthcare innovation as the design and creative management of human-centred services. The major challenges in today’s healthcare systems demand holistic management — a practice of making design decisions — to innovate at the levels of policy, process and patients. A whole systems approach helps us rethink healthcare as a large-scale design challenge, where services, people, communications — as well as facilities and business models — are all serving to co-produce care for people in our service and communities. Peter shares new work since Design for Care was published that illustrates how these approaches are quickly becoming successful in North American health systems.

World Congress Patient Engagement SummitWorldCongress
Patient Engagement has long been a buzzword for clinicians and health care organizations — however true engagement strategies and patient-centered care designs have fallen flat for many organizations or become simply a theoretical vision. In order to meet Meaningful Use standards and most importantly improve clinical outcomes for patients, providers must actually engage and incorporate patients into the equation for better health outcomes.
Join us at the World Congress Patient Engagement Summit as we leave behind theory and bring about actionable change with actionable solutions to engage patients and move the needle on clinical outcomes and community health. Collaborate with multiple stakeholders and learn how some of the nation’s most innovation hospitals and health systems are engaging the most complex and vulnerable patient populations through communication strategies, community involvement, and technology.

Direct to Consumer vs. Organic Growth - What works?VSee
This document discusses strategies for telehealth companies to succeed, including direct-to-consumer models and organic growth models. The direct-to-consumer approach requires proving trust and quality to patients online, while organic growth involves demonstrating value and efficiency gains to physicians. Both models must satisfy the values of physicians, patients, and the healthcare system to gain adoption. The document recommends starting with organic growth to develop local trust before expanding direct-to-consumer, focusing on quality assurance, and solving issues like access delays and office inefficiency through telehealth.
The document discusses the importance of customer service in today's competitive hospital environment. It argues that customer service should be as important a goal as clinical quality and can be a strategic differentiator. Hospitals will need to focus on individual consumer experiences and anticipate their needs through active listening strategies and real-time problem solving. Customer feedback loops will also be important to continuously improve service. Elevating customer service will require measuring service levels and examining cultural norms that may hinder service.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.
