Designers embedded within a large healthcare system have a unique opportunity to work directly with patients, doctors, nurses, and other staff to create significant impact in how healthcare is provided. However, along with this exceptional access come big challenges: complicated bureaucratic power structures, change-adverse organizational cultures, and industry-specific technology constraints. How do designers — often working alone or in small teams — position themselves in order to make a difference in this complex environment?
This session will convene a group of seasoned in-house UX and service designers from diverse healthcare institutions to share stories and examples of their work as they talk about the specific challenges they face and discuss strategies for working more effectively.

Andrew has worked across Iora Health since its founding: building the collaborative care platform, advancing a dynamic model of primary care.
Focus on Frailty breakout session: Wessex AHSN Healthy Ageing

Positive deviance: an asset-based approach to improve malaria outcomes
The positive deviance project in Cambodia used an asset-based approach to improve malaria outcomes. It identified "positive deviant" individuals within communities in Cambodia who successfully prevented malaria despite limited resources. The project had two phases: 1) A one-week process to identify positive deviant behaviors and individuals through community dialogues. 2) A six-month implementation phase where positive deviant role models shared their behaviors with community members through meetings and other interactive activities. The project aimed to determine if promoting existing successful behaviors within communities could change malaria-related social norms and behaviors.

Falls Collaborative Clinical updates
Falls in hospitals are common, especially among older patients aged 65 and above. Falls can have serious impacts on patient health and experience. There is evidence that falls could be reduced by 25-30% with focused interventions on older patient wards. One goal of the NHS Improvement Falls Collaborative was to encourage a multi-professional focus on falls prevention and reduction.
The document provides updates from the Falls Collaborative on various clinical topics. One topic discussed improving lying and standing blood pressure assessments. National audit results found that only 16% of patients over 65 had these assessments within 3 days of admission, despite recommendations that all over 65 patients should have them. This is a presentation I gave as part of an NIHR masterclass event for its trainees earlier this year. It seemed to go down well and hopefully there are some useful pointers in here for people communicating about health research or science.
Positive deviance: an asset-based approach to improve malaria outcomes
The positive deviance project in Cambodia used an asset-based approach to improve malaria outcomes. It identified "positive deviant" individuals within communities in Cambodia who successfully prevented malaria despite limited resources. The project had two phases: 1) A one-week process to identify positive deviant behaviors and individuals through community dialogues. 2) A six-month implementation phase where positive deviant role models shared their behaviors with community members through meetings and other interactive activities. The project aimed to determine if promoting existing successful behaviors within communities could change malaria-related social norms and behaviors.

Falls Collaborative Clinical updates
Falls in hospitals are common, especially among older patients aged 65 and above. Falls can have serious impacts on patient health and experience. There is evidence that falls could be reduced by 25-30% with focused interventions on older patient wards. One goal of the NHS Improvement Falls Collaborative was to encourage a multi-professional focus on falls prevention and reduction.
The document provides updates from the Falls Collaborative on various clinical topics. One topic discussed improving lying and standing blood pressure assessments. National audit results found that only 16% of patients over 65 had these assessments within 3 days of admission, despite recommendations that all over 65 patients should have them. The updates aim to increase awareness of orthostatic hypotension

"Designing for behavior change can be looked at through many lenses. As the implementers of interventions, products and services designed to modify the decisions and behaviors of others, we can adopt a “Doing to,” “Working with,” or “Working for” mentality. The people on the receiving end of our interventions can perceive this frame of reference, and this can have a great impact on the initiation, engagement and outcomes of designs we put in place.
While the current popular discourse revolves around fixing or capitalizing upon our limited cognitive, emotional and motivational resources through varying levels of authority and control, humans are self-organizing systems who may need little more than support of their autonomy and growth potential to enact tremendous change in their lives. With this in mind, delivering interventions that preserve human agency and foster authentic functioning can seem like a radical (yet welcomed) approach.
But how might we do this? What kinds of systems can be implemented to achieve individual and group level change while preserving a sense of volitional engagement? Games and Gameful Design (but not “Gamification”) offer a promising approach to creating the conditions whereby people are willing, active participants in initiating and sustaining meaningful change efforts.
