TOPIC : COOPERATIVE LEARNING
INTRODUCTION
Cooperative learning aims to organize classroom
activities into academic and social learning experiences. It
aims at ‘structuring positive interdependence’
DEFINITION
Slavin defines cooperative learning as an
instructional programme in which students work in small
groups to help one another master academic content.
elements in the classroom
1. POSITIVE INTERDEPENDENCE : Plan to finish a product
together.
2. FACE-TO –FACE INTERACTION : Sharing resources and
helping, supporting, encouraging each other’s.
3. INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY : Sharing his/her knowledge
with the rest of the group.
4. EQUAL PARTICIPATION : Equal shares and responsibility.
5. SIMULTANEOUS INTERACTION : Class time is
designed to allow many student interactions
during the period.
6. GROUP PROCESSING : Discuss how well they
are achieving their goals.
7. INTERPERSONAL AND SMALL GROUP
SKILLS : It enhances leadership, decision-
making, trust building, communication.
steps in cooperative learning
1. The content should be identified and criteria should be
determined by the teacher.
2. The most useful cooperative learning technique is identified
and group size is determined by the teacher.
3. Students are assigned to groups.
4. Classroom should be arranged.
5. Ensure that group runs smoothly.
6. A timeline for activities is made clear to students.
7. The teacher presents initial material as appropriate.
8. The teacher monitors student interaction in the groups.
9. Student outcomes are evaluated.
10. Groups are rewarded for success.
ROLE OF TEACHER
 Teacher determines the final grouping, tasks etc.
 Determines values for assigned tasks.
 Serves as a facilitator.
 Signals closure to the cooperative learning activity by
initiating sharing.
how to group students?
 Generally a mix of students based on ability level.
 Groups may comprised of 4 to 5 students :
●
2 or 3 average students
●
1 below average student
●
1 above average students.
●
Groups should be changed every 2
months.
evaluation of cooperative learning
Merits
 Increases student motivation.
 Promotes higher achievement, class attendance.
 Enhance student satisfaction with learning experience.
Demerits
 Time consuming.
 Noise level in the classroom will escalate.
 Existing facilities in the classroom are limited.
conclusion
Cooperative learning method is useful to students
in order to learn academic curriculum by doing activities. It
also helps them to memorise the contents thereafter.

EQUAL PARTICIPATION : Equal shares and responsibility.

The most useful cooperative learning technique is identified and group size is determined by the teacher. 3. Students are assigned to groups. 4. Classroom should be arranged. 5. Ensure that group runs smoothly. 6. A timeline for activities is made clear to students.

  • 9. ROLE OF TEACHER  Teacher determines the final grouping, tasks etc.  Determines values for assigned tasks.  Serves as a facilitator.  Signals closure to the cooperative learning activity by initiating sharing.
  • 10. how to group students?  Generally a mix of students based on ability level.  Groups may comprised of 4 to 5 students : ● 2 or 3 average students ● 1 below average student ● 1 above average students. ● Groups should be changed every 2 months.
  • 11. evaluation of cooperative learning Merits  Increases student motivation.  Promotes higher achievement, class attendance.  Enhance student satisfaction with learning experience.
  • 12. Demerits  Time consuming.  Noise level in the classroom will escalate.  Existing facilities in the classroom are limited.
  • 13. conclusion Cooperative learning method is useful to students in order to learn academic curriculum by doing activities. It also helps them to memorise the contents thereafter.
