Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is now a well-established cause of cervical cancer. HPV causes virtually 100% of cervical cancer cases
There is growing evidence of HPV being a relevant factor in other ANOGENITAL CANCERS (anus, vulva, vagina and penis) and head and neck cancers.
HPV is also responsible for other diseases such as recurrent juvenile respiratory papillomatosis and genital warts
Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells caused by multiple changes in gene expression leading to
dysregulated balance of cell proliferation and cell death and ultimately evolving into a population
of cells that can invade tissues and metastasize to distant sites, causing significant morbidity and,
if untreated, death of the host.
It is characterized by alterations in the expression of multiple genes, leading to dysregulation of the normal cellular program for cell division and cell differentiation. This results in an imbalance of cell replication and cell death that favours the growth of a tumour cell population. Tumour is an abnormal lump or growth of cells. When the cells in the tumour are normal, it is benign. If something goes wrong, and they overgrew and produced a lump, the cells are abnormal and can grow uncontrollably, they are cancerous cells, and the tumour is malignant. Benign tumour won't invade nearby tissues or spread to other areas of the body (metastasize). A benign tumour is less
worrisome unless it is pressing on nearby tissues, nerves, or blood vessels and causing damage.
Fibroids in the uterus or lipomas are examples of benign tumours. Malignant means that the tumour is made of cancer cells, and it can invade nearby tissues. Some cancer cells can move into the bloodstream or lymph nodes, where they can spread to other tissues within the body—this is called metastasis. Cancer can occur anywhere in the body including the breast, intestines, lungs,
reproductive organs, blood, and skin. The occurrence of cancer varies in different organs (Fig: 01)
Clinically, cancer appears to be many different diseases with different phenotypic characteristics.
As cancerous growth progresses, genetic drift in the cell population produces cell heterogeneity in such characteristics as cell antigenicity, invasiveness, metastatic potential, rate of cell proliferation, differentiation state, and response to chemotherapeutic agents. At the molecular

Telomerase is the enzyme that signals your telomeres to grow longer, unfortunately, it shuts down while you are still in your mother's womb.
Once Nobel Prize winning research identified that telomeres are the protective tips at each end of the strands of your DNA, and as your cells replicate, gradully your telomeres grow shorter. They are the "aging-clocks" inside your DNA.
Once Dr. DePinho found a way to reactivate the telomerase enzyme, he turned old mice into young mice again.
Not long after, scientists discovered ways to do this in humans as well, and today, the discovery of the telomere and telomerase are the most important anti-aging breakthrough of our time.

These hallmarks constitute an organizing principle for rationalizing the complexities of neoplastic disease. They include sustaining proliferative signaling, evading growth suppressors, resisting cell death, enabling replicative immortality, inducing angiogenesis, and activating invasion and metastasis.

Writing Analytics for Epistemic Features of Student Writing #icls2016 talkSimon Knight
Talk presented at #ICLS2016 presented in Singapore. I discuss levels of description as sites of epistemic cognition focusing on writing and use of textual features to associate rubric scores with epistemic cognition.
My thanks to my collaborators (listed on the paper) particularly Laura Allen, who also generously let me adapt the later slides on NLP studies of writing.
Abstract: Literacy, encompassing the ability to produce written outputs from the reading of multiple sources, is a key learning goal. Selecting information, and evaluating and integrating claims from potentially competing documents is a complex literacy task. Prior research exploring differing behaviours and their association to constructs such as epistemic cognition has used ‘multiple document processing’ (MDP) tasks. Using this model, 270 paired participants, wrote a review of a document. Reports were assessed using a rubric associated with features of complex literacy behaviours. This paper focuses on the conceptual and empirical associations between those rubric-marks and textual features of the reports on a set of natural language processing (NLP) indicators. Findings indicate the potential of NLP indicators for providing feedback regarding the writing of such outputs, demonstrating clear relationships both across rubric facets and between rubric facets and specific NLP indicators.

The analysis of data collected from user interactions with educational and information technology has attracted much attention as a promising approach for advancing our understanding of the learning process. This promise motivated the emergence of the new field learning analytics and mobilized the education sector to embrace the use of data for decision-making. This talk will first introduce the field of learning analytics and touch on lessons learned from some well-known case studies. The talk will then identify critical challenges that require immediate attention in order for learning analytics to make a sustainable impact on learning, teaching, and decision making. The talk will conclude by discussing a set of milestones selected as critical for the maturation of the field of learning analytics. The most important take away from the talk will be that
- systemic approaches to the development and adoption of learning analytics are critical,
- multidisciplinary teams are necessary to unlock a full potential of learning analytics, and
- capacity development at institutional levels through the inclusion of diverse stakeholders is essential for full learning analytics adoption.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
