EMI stands for Electric & Musical Industries. It began in 1887 when inventor Emile Berliner demonstrated the first gramophone. In 1931, the Gramophone Company merged with Columbia Graphophone to form EMI. EMI is located at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London and has signed many successful artists over the years such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie.

3. I’m going to be doing my presentation about EMI Music Recording Company. EMI Music is one of the world’s leading music companies, home to some of the most successful and best known recording artists. EMI Music brings artists and fans together by driving action and creating value wherever music is experienced. Likewise, their intentions are to serve their artists, consumers and partners all over the world with companies and network licenses. And, EMI promotes the careers of artists such as Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Pink and David Guetta. Likewise, it distribute their music across the globe, covering a huge variety of digital music business models and ideas. The genre of music EMI produces is mainly mainstream music such as Pop which has a bit of an edge attached to it, electronic music, Rock and Roll and so on. The reason to why they produce a wide range of music genres is because if they produce just one similar music genre they won’t make as much as money and fame as they are making now. Additionally, artists on EMI labels include Lily Allen, Bat For Lashes, The Beatles, Beastie Boys, Luke Bryan, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Gorillaz, David Guetta, Iron Maiden, Norah Jones, Lady Antebellum, Massive Attack, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Pink Floyd, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sir Simon Rattle, Snoop Dogg, Tinie Tempah, Thirty Seconds To Mars, KT Tunstall, Keith Urban and Robbie Williams and many more. They also have international artists such as Amaral (Spain), Air and Camille (France), Empire of the Sun (Australia), Tiziano Ferro and Vasco Rossi (Italy), Flex (Mexico), LaFee (Germany) and Hikaru Utada (Japan) and my favourite artist Don Omar (Latin urban). As well as independent labels and artists. with a global menu of commercial services and seamless access to an expanding range of revenue streams and business models, including digital and physical distribution, sales, press and promotion, marketing, licensing, synch, brand partnerships, live recordings and merchandising. This clearly connotes that EMI is a multinational company which has also got offices globally.

4. It all began in 1887, when an inventor and the founder of EMI, Emile Berliner , demonstrates the first gramophone, the technical foundation of the record business. Then, in 1897, the Gramophone Company and Columbia Phonograph open for business in London. Following that, in 1898, the Gramophone Company makes its first recordings. It becomes known globally where Gramophone Company opens offices in Russia , India, China, Japan, Austria, England, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, Greece and Australia in 1900. Also, it sales Branches in 11 countries In 1902, Tenor Enrico Caruso becomes Gramophone Company’s first major artist. In his first studio session he recorded 10 songs in two hours. Additionally, in 1904, Gramophone Company Ltd is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Where stocks, bonds, financial instruments are sold on a day-to-day basis. And, in 1913, one-third of British households owned gramophones and 60% of Gramophone Company profits come from outside the UK. In 1914, the Gramophone Company sells nearly four million records a year. Most importantly, in 1931, the Gramophone Company merges with Columbia Graphophone to form Electric and Musical Industries (EMI). EMI is located in the world famous recording studios at Abbey Road in London are opened with a recording by Sir Edward Elgar and the London Symphony Orchestra. Following their success, in 1946, EMI starts signing many new artists including Herbert von Karajan and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. And they EMI establishes a European licensing agreement with Hollywood studio MGM. Amazingly, in 1955, EMI gets hold of Capitol Records in Los Angeles, one of the largest record labels in the US. Then, in 1961, EMI establishes a joint venture record company with Toshiba in Japan. Jaw droppingly, when EMI releases ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ by Pink Floyd. It stays on the American Billboard album chart for longer than any other album in history – 741 weeks.

5. During the 1930s and 1940s, EMI signed artists including Arturo Toscanini, which was the first artist to be signed, then, Sir Edward Elgar, and Otto Klemperer, among many others. In this period of time, EMI appointed its first A&R managers. These included George Martin, who later brought the Beatles into the EMI fold. Some of the artists who continued signing in at that time in EMI Music Recording Company were Cliff Richard (1958), Pink Loydin (1967), Queen (1972) and Spice Girls (1996). Alternatively, in1974, EMI Music Publishing was formed. Then, in 1976, EMI Music Publishing acquires the Screen Gems and Colgems music publishing companies from Columbia Pictures Industries. To continue, in1979, EMI purchases the Liberty/United Artists record company which includes the Blue Note label. In 1989, the company expanded by purchasing the SBK Entertainment World and in 1990 EMI acquires 50% of Chrysalis Records, purchasing the remaining 50% a year later. EMI Music Publishing purchases the Filmtrax catalogue. Again, EMI acquires leading Christian music company Sparrow Records to form EMI Christian Music Group To gain even more popularity, in1993, EMI had bought Astralwerks Records which is recognized in New York. To add, in1994, EMI takes controlling interest in Japanese joint venture Toshiba-EMI. In 1996, EMI acquires 50% of leading US independent Priority Records, acquiring the remaining 50% in 1998. Continuing with their success in 2000, EMI launches the industry’s first digital album download, David Bowie’s ‘…Hours’. Again, in 2001, EMI launches the first ever internet video single, ‘Dig In’ by Lenny Kravitz. At last but not least, in 2002, EMI wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the fourth time. Moreover, EMI is the first major music company to make new music available digitally at the same time as it is released to radio

6. Distributor are also often known as the ‘ interns’ which, basically, means volunteering for a long period of time to gain experience. This would usually be for 6 months with no income at all. This section, primarily, deals with getting the music such as records, cassettes, and CDs to the retail outlets. (e.g. A retail outlet is HMV) A producer has many roles that may include, gathering ideas for the project, selecting songs and/or musicians, coaching the artist and musicians in the studio, controlling the recording sessions, and supervising the entire process through mixing and mastering. However, it also involves orchestrating the music we listen to every day. Recording producers are working in collaboration with recording artists to create a highly professional and talented recorded representation of their music. Sales are mainly known as the ‘ runners’ which means that they are at the bottom of the company’s hierarchy. This will also mean that they will earn low wages, obviously. In addition, the sales department is in charge of the retail aspect of the record business. It cooperates with the record store chains and other music stores to get ne albums onto retailers’ shelves. This branch often coordinates these efforts with the promotion, advertising and publicity departments. (E.g. through the use of adverts). Music Industry Roles

7. Roger Faxon is Chief Executive Officer of EMI Group, chairman and CEO of both EMI Music and EMI Music Publishing and a member of the board of EMI’s parent company Maltby Capital. Mr. Faxon graduating with a BA in International Relations & Political Economy from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. His first career was the US government where he highly developed to directing the subcommittee on Housing and Community Development in the US House of Representatives. Roger Faxon as a CEO, EMI Music Publishing earns around $3,092,266 Faxon joined EMI in 1994 as senior vice president, worldwide business development and strategy where he directed the company’s global planning process and oversaw the attainment of related businesses as well as the company’s portfolio of media investments. He was chosen to his current role as CEO of EMI Group in June 2010, with responsibility for leading the operations of EMI’s music publishing and recorded music divisions. He also played a central role in the successful de-merger of the Thorn Group from EMI in 1996. In April 1999 Faxon assumed the post of executive vice president and chief financial officer for EMI Music Publishing before being chosen Chief Financial Officer of EMI Group in early 2002. In January 2005 he was named president and Chief Operating Officer of EMI Music Publishing and the following year became president and co-CEO before becoming sole chairman and CEO in March 2007. Roger Faxon’s occupation is a full time contract which has a myriad of responsibilities and accountabilities that needs to be met daily. For a job like this Roger must have lots of industry experience, knowledge and skills. Most importantly, there is no one who Roger can report to as he is at the highest latter on the company’s hierarchy. Meaning, he should be able to find solutions and be a motivated leader throughout his career without reporting to other members above him. This is also because, occupations on the lower ranks look up to Roger Faxon as an upper class, highly qualified positive male role model and an inspiration to us, all. However, there is a large number of music job roles which needs to report to Roger Foxon, as a Chief Executive Officer, such as ranked from the highest to the lowest on the hierarchy are the Legal Department, Vice President, Manager, Artists & Repertoires, Producers, Sales and Distributors.

9. Astonishingly, EMI artists and songwriters win more than 20 awards at the 53rd annual Grammys on 14/02/2011. Most recently, EMI artists and writers win seven BRIT Awards on 16/02/11. Additionally, EMI Music and Beatport sign international licensing deal on 09/02/11. Also, EMI announces successful capital restructuring, and change of ownership on 01/02/11. And, Pink Floyd and EMI sign new global agreement on 04/01/11. Similarly, in 2011, EMI is acquired by Citigroup and announces successful capital restructuring. Amazingly, EMI Music artists grabs 47 nominations for 53rd annual Grammy Awards in 2010. Again, in 2003, Norah Jones sweeps the Grammys with an unprecedented eight awards out of eight nominations including all major categories. EMI extends its successful exclusive licensing agreement with Walt Disney Records in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Building on the success of Capitol Records Nashville, EMI forms EMI Records Nashville.

10. Fascinatingly, EMI launches the biggest European music download initiative by a record company in Europe with over 140,000 tracks from more than 3,000 EMI artists. In 2005, EMI signs exclusive licensing deal with Walt Disney Records for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Likewise, in 2006, EMI signs first ever pan-European P2P download agreement. Interestingly, EMI takes full ownership of Toshiba-EMI. The company is re-named EMI Music Japan. Adding to the point, in 2007, EMI was the first major music company to make its music available without digital rights management (DRM) software. And, Depeche Mode re-sign with EMI, including North America for the first time. Given our heritage of innovation, when digital music began to take off in the 1990s, EMI was well placed to respond to the new trends. EMI Music’s first websites went live in 1993 and 1994. Even more success, in 1998, EMI streamed the first complete album over the internet, ‘Mezzanine’ by Massive Attack.. Nowadays, EMI Music has agreements with hundreds of digital partners to distribute our music across the globe, covering a huge variety of digital music business models and ideas.
