- 2. Phoneme The smallest phonetic unit in a language that is capable of conveying a distinction in meaning, as the m of mat and the b of bat in English. Segmentation splitting into segments: the dividing of something into segments segmented structure: the structure of something that is made up of a series of similar segments body structure: the structure of the body of an organism such as a worm or centipede that consists of a linear series of similar subunits
- 3. Phoneme Segmentation Breaking a word into its separate sounds. Can say each sound while tapping, clapping, or holding up fingers. Example: What are the sounds in hat? /h/ /a/ /t/. Phoneme segmentation is a phonemic awareness skill.
- 4. Segmenting is important to reading Phonemic awareness is one of the number one predictors of reading success; however, it is a skill many people have never heard of. Here’s the quick explanation: Phonemes are the individual sounds in words. Before children can read the sounds in words, they need to be able to hear, isolate, and manipulate the sounds in words.
- 5. In the classroom Teachers can have the students meet in a small group. The words being segmented can be vocabulary words or unit study words. The Slinky Slide Give each child a slinky. Each child holds the slinky in two hands pushed together. The teacher will say a c-v or c-v-c word. Then the students orally segment each sound as they pull the slinky apart. Finally have them repeat the whole word (fast) pushing the slinky back together.
- 6. At home Parents can use the technique of segmenting words at home. They can have their children make construction paper inch worms. The paper will be long and fold into parts. Kids will write word segments on the worm. The children will sound out each section until finally saying the word once the worm is its full length. Parents can practice a variety of words with their children. & on the go Apps such as Apple’s Phonics Awareness by Bugbrained are fun ways for students to engage in segmenting in a video game style.
