To get our kids into reading and more importantly the grand world of ideas we must show them ways to create personal meaning in and from any piece of text. To do that, we must teach them ways to talk back to and interact with every text by marking the text and THEN annotating in the margins--learning out loud! I'll share my experiences as a workshop model teacher on both a professional and personal level, sharing how workshop model has helped my kids at school, me as a teacher, and my daughter in her freshman year of college. I'm part of my district's Workshop Model cohort with Cris Tovani and Sam Bennett. I'm studying under them in workshops and they will be in our classrooms this year!
Unit four
Unit four focuses on celebrations, holidays, and festivals. It teaches how to talk about birthdays, special days, and traditions using grammar structures like the present continuous and going to for future events, as well as indirect object pronouns. On Opening Day in 1976 Bill Veeck noticed the fans were singing along with Caray so a secret microphone was placed in the broadcast booth the following day to allow ALL the fans to hear him. Veeckexplained to Caray, "Harry, anybody in the ballpark hearing you sing 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' knows that he can sing as well as you can. Probably better than you can. So he or she sings along. Hell, if you had a good singing voice you'd intimidate them, and nobody would join in!"
