Here at Manchester Metropolitan University we have recently completed the roll out of an apps for teaching and learning project that is centrally licencing and supporting 5 apps (Vevox, Mentimeter, Kahoot, Padelt and Nearpod) that we believe promote and enhance active learning practices for our students.
To do this we developed a learning activities frame work based on some research we undertook into the types of activities teaching staff were employing in their practice. This framework has allowed us to select a relative small, but we think, well mapped set of tools to enable colleagues to design and deliver a broad range of learning activities in their practice.

Industry needs graduates from universities having knowledge and skills to tackle the practical issues of real life software development. To facilitate software engineering students and fulfill industry need, the Department of Information Processing Science, University of Oulu, Finland, built a Software Factory laboratory (SWF) in 2012 based on Lean concept. This study examines factors in the SWF learning environment that affect learning of a SWF course by the students. It employs amended Computer laboratory Environment Inventory (CLEI) and Attitude towards Computers and Computing Courses Questionnaire instrument (ACCC) with two additional constructs: 1) Kanban board 2) Collaborative learning. The general findings indicate that SWF learning environment, collaborative learning and Kanban board play important role in software engineering students learning, academic achievements and professional skills gaining. The findings are helpful to develop a better understanding about learning environments. The information gathered in this study can also be used to improve the software engineering learning environment.
Augmented Reality in eLearning: The UOC Case Study

Khan Lab School is an independent school associated with Khan Academy that runs a personalized, mixed-age program with a project-based learning approach. Because KLS tracks mastery instead of letter grades and groups students by independence level instead of age, a new kind of reporting system is needed to show student progress. This paper builds on research directions from ‘activity theory’ and ‘learning design’ to provide ‘facilitation’ for students standing within decision making related to selection of web 2.0 tools and university provided web-based applications for supporting students activities within problem and project based learning. In the area of problem and project based learning, facilitation is the core term and the teacher often has the role as facilitator or moderator instead of a teacher teaching. Technology adoption for learning activities needs facilitation, which is mostly absent. Sustainable adoption might be facilitated based on tool appropriation with activities associated with courses and projects. Our mapping of different tools in a framework is reported based on interviews, observations, narratives and survey. A direction towards facilitation process for adoption is discussed as part of future scope of work.

Khan Lab School is an independent school associated with Khan Academy that runs a personalized, mixed-age program with a project-based learning approach. Because KLS tracks mastery instead of letter grades and groups students by independence level instead of age, a new kind of reporting system is needed to show student progress. Yet Analytics has built role-specific data dashboards for students, teachers, and leadership that pulls data from digital and in-person learning activity to provide a unified view of student progress at KLS.

This paper builds on research directions from ‘activity theory’ and ‘learning design’ to provide ‘facilitation’ for students standing within decision making related to selection of web 2.0 tools and university provided web-based applications for supporting students activities within problem and project based learning. In the area of problem and project based learning, facilitation is the core term and the teacher often has the role as facilitator or moderator instead of a teacher teaching. Technology adoption for learning activities needs facilitation, which is mostly absent. Sustainable adoption might be facilitated based on tool appropriation with activities associated with courses and projects. Our mapping of different tools in a framework is reported based on interviews, observations, narratives and survey. A direction towards facilitation process for adoption is discussed as part of future scope of work.

Developing switch skills with apps and software

Proloquo2Go: One of my favourite things

Updates include improved switch access, Dropbox backup/restore, and sharing capabilities. - Enabling students to reach their potential through increased access to educational resources and experts that extend learning beyond the capacities or limitations of their school or community. Engaging students in rich, compelling learning experiences that develop deeper knowledge and skill development especially the problem-solving, creativity and critical thinking skills so highly desired for our world today. Empowering students to take responsibility for their own educational destinies and to explore knowledge with an unfettered curiosity, thus creating a new generation of life long learners. In education, three key technology-related shifts are underway that shows this to be an idea whose time has finally come. The first involves shifting computers from school tech labs to classrooms and from classrooms to pupils’ backpacks. The second replaces books and print-based analogues with online curricula and digital content. The third removes one-size-fits all, teacher-at-front-of-the room instructional approaches in favour of personalised lessons, assessments, and instructional modalities."
