The paper provides a reflection on the past and present of research on the use of digital technologies for learning, teaching and research, along with an extrapolation of the future of the field. It considers which technologies have been transformative in the last thirty years or so along with the nature of the transformation and the challenges. Research in the field is grouped into three types: pedagogical, technical and organizational. The emergence and nature of digital learning as a field is considered. Six facets of digital learning, and in particular digital technologies, as a research field are described: the good and the bad of digital technologies, the speed of change, the new forms of discourse and collaboration, the importance of understanding users, the new practices that have emerged, and finally a reflection on the wider impact.

Many teaching staff are now faced with a situation where they are not only expected to continue to teach students remotely online, but are also dealing with the learning needs of students in the class with them. This type of teaching goes by a variety of different names, Hybrid, HyFlex, Flexible, Dual Mode to name but a few. Supporting teaching staff in this situation can be a challenge as they and the services that facilitate them struggle with what for many is a juggling act that far too often results in one group of students feeling left out. The presentation discusses best practice approaches and metrics for evaluation that support seamless learning with social media. We draw upon the theoretical frameworks of social learning theory, transfer learning (bricolage), and educational design patterns to elaborate upon different ideas for ways in which social media can support seamless learning. To exemplify how social media can support seamless learning we follow up with presenting three case studies on the organizational level, on the program level, and on the individual level. Each case study analyzes the context for the use of social media, followed by a discussion of how social media serves as a catalyst for seamless learning.
To refresh our courses one first needs to pause and take stock
Our digital ecologies are changing because the way we are wanting to teach and examine is changing. Moving forward, we see L&T using new and more engaging forms of technology, designed to help our students not just learn disciplinary skills, but to find new ways of engaging with their peers. Improvement is a deliberate act that involves planning and execution. We need to find the new tools and techniques to help us with our teaching. We will look at some possible affordances you can enjoy when you are ready to pause and take stock.

Technology in the class in the form of laptops, tablets and smartphones connect the student to the outside world as part of the learning process. Technology can both support the student learning but can also be a source of distraction. Research has focused on the distractive nature of technology in class such as laptops (Fried, 2008; Ravizza, Uitvlugt, & Fenn, 2017; Sana, Weston, & Cepeda, 2013). However, this study will focus specifically on smartphones in the class for the following reasons. Almost every college student in the Netherlands brings a smartphone with them to class, the smartphones are physically close to the student throughout the day which can lead to behaviour that makes it particularly difficult to disconnect from social networks. Students are more likely to view them as leisure devices (Lepp, Li, Barkley, & Salehi-Esfahani, 2015) which blurs the lines when this ‘leisure’ device is brought into the study environment of the classroom. The close (physical) relationship that students have with their smartphones (Echenique, Molías, & Bullen, 2015) can lead to additional stress when they are separated from them (Tams, Legoux, & Léger, 2018) referred to as Nomophobia, the fear of not having one’s smartphone (Aguilera-Manrique et al., 2018) and stress through Fear of Missing out (Beuningen & Kloosteram, 2018; Rosen, 2016). In some cases smartphone use can tend towards addiction (Montag & Reuter, 2017) which has been shown to be negatively related to academic performance (Baert, Vujic, Amez, & Claeskens, 2018; Felisoni & Godoi, 2018; Junco & Cotten, 2012; Lepp, Barkley, & Karpinski, 2015; Samaha & Hawi, 2016) since while smartphones can be a tool to support the learning processes, they can also be a source of distraction in the class (Beland & Murphy, 2015; Carrier, Rosen, Cheever, & Lim, 2015; Flanigan & Babchuk, 2015; Mendoza, Pody, Lee, Kim, & McDonough, 2018; Tindell & Bohlander, 2012). The human brain is vulnerable to distraction (Gazzaley & Rosen, 2016) and although students may consider they are ‘multi-tasking’ (Kirschner & Bruyckere, 2017), they are in fact task-switching which leads to inefficiency in task performance due to a strain on limited cognitive resources (Kirschner & van Merriënboer, 2013) and those who task-switch the most often overestimate their ability to do so (Ophir, Nass, & Wagner, 2009) with negative consequences for their study results (Carrier et al., 2015; Rosen, Carrier, & Cheever, 2013).

Teaching and learning with Internet-supported technologies - Course syllabusJoan E. Hughes, Ph.D.
In the course participants will examine a myriad of ways the Internet may function within teaching and learning contexts through internet-supported technologies (e.g., web, apps etc.). The course will focus on these technologies’ capabilities for instructional use, learning, professional development, and research. The course will provide a set of foundational readings to situate your thinking in this educative space. Then you will lead your own experiences with a diverse array of Internet-based instructional and learning tools; it will also encourage you to consider these tools with a critical eye, always determining the advantages and disadvantages of using particular web-supported or web-based tools.
This course focuses on the role of Internet-based technologies within face-to-face or hybrid learning situations and mostly within PK-12 realms. For all uses we consider, we will use the following questions (as well as any you offer) to structure our analysis of Internet uses:
• What assumptions about the nature of knowledge and learning does this innovation make (either explicitly or implicitly)?
• What unique role does the technology play in facilitating learning?
• How is this innovation seen to fit with existing school curriculum (e.g., Is the innovation intended to supplement or supplant existing curriculum? Is it intended to enhance the learning of something already central to the curriculum or some new set of understandings or competencies?)
• What demands does the innovation place on the knowledge of teachers or other “users”? What knowledge supports does the innovation provide?
• How does the technology fit or interact with the social context of learning? (e.g., Are computers used by individuals or groups? Does the technology support collaboration or individual work? What sorts of interaction does the technology facilitate or hinder? Does it change or reify social systems?)
Course goals include:
• Understanding the historical context of uses of the Internet and Web for teaching and learning
• Experiencing what it is like to be an actor in the ‘participatory’ or ‘semantic’ or ‘connected’ culture of the Web
• Developing a critical framework for evaluating web uses in educational contexts
• Interpreting (i.e., reading, understanding, interpreting, adapting) educational research that focuses on teaching/learning with the Internet-supported technologies

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
