• Another name is Maitree Super Thermal Power Project
• The project are divided by two phase.
• Total capacity of plant is 2600 MW units.
• Total area of the power plant is 2000 acres.(742 hectares)
• The site area of the plant is 14 km far away from Sundarbon.
• Sponsor: Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Pvt Ltd. (BIFPCL)
• Parent company: Bangladesh Power Development Board, NTPC
• Company Name: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) from India
• Location: Khulna, Bangladesh
• Type: Ultra-Supercritical
• Projected in service: 2021
• Coal Source: Imported (through the Port of Mongla)
• Source of financing: BPDB and NTPC (30%), Exim Bank India (70%)
Project Details Info.
Environmental issues
• The Rampal station is against The Ramsar Convention
• Bangladesh signed the convention in 1992
• The plant will need to import 4.72 million tons of coal per year.
• 59 ships each having 80,000-ton capacity that would be taken to the port on
the bank of Poshur river
• The 40 kilometers from the port to the plant cuts through the Sundarbans
and it includes the river flow path.
• coal-carrying vehicles are not often covered as they scatter large amounts of
fly ash, coal dust and sulfur, and other toxic chemicals
• The predictions made by environment and ecology experts are that the plant
will release various toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen
and sulphur dioxide
Government response
• the emission of greenhouse gas will be kept at the minimum level.
• they will import high quality coal.
• They will build a 275 metre high chimney,
• Employ state-of-the art technology and other steps to keep its impact
• Chief coordinator of Save the Sundarbans, pointed out that the selected location of
the project was only nine kilometres from Sundarban.
• About 2.5 million people depend on the Sundarban region, such as wood-cutters,
fishermen, and honey gatherers.
• It will generate about 0.3 million tonnes ashes and around 0.5 million tonnes sludge
and liquid waste.
• The power plant will use modern technology so that pollution level can be
minimized.

  • 4. Project Details Info. • Another name is Maitree Super Thermal Power Project • The project are divided by two phase. • Total capacity of plant is 2600 MW units. • Total area of the power plant is 2000 acres.(742 hectares) • The site area of the plant is 14 km far away from Sundarbon.
  • 5. • Sponsor: Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Pvt Ltd. (BIFPCL) • Parent company: Bangladesh Power Development Board, NTPC • Company Name: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) from India • Location: Khulna, Bangladesh • Type: Ultra-Supercritical • Projected in service: 2021 • Coal Source: Imported (through the Port of Mongla) • Source of financing: BPDB and NTPC (30%), Exim Bank India (70%) Project Details Info.

Environmental issues • The Rampal station is against The Ramsar Convention • Bangladesh signed the convention in 1992 • The plant will need to import 4.72 million tons of coal per year. • 59 ships each having 80,000-ton capacity that would be taken to the port on the bank of Poshur river • The 40 kilometers from the port to the plant cuts through the Sundarbans and it includes the river flow path. • coal-carrying vehicles are not often covered as they scatter large amounts of fly ash, coal dust and sulfur, and other toxic chemicals • The predictions made by environment and ecology experts are that the plant will release various toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide
  • 7. Government response • the emission of greenhouse gas will be kept at the minimum level. • they will import high quality coal. • They will build a 275 metre high chimney, • Employ state-of-the art technology and other steps to keep its impact • Chief coordinator of Save the Sundarbans, pointed out that the selected location of the project was only nine kilometres from Sundarban. • About 2.5 million people depend on the Sundarban region, such as wood-cutters, fishermen, and honey gatherers.
  • 8. • It will generate about 0.3 million tonnes ashes and around 0.5 million tonnes sludge and liquid waste. • The power plant will use modern technology so that pollution level can be minimized. Government response

Impacts • Environmental Impacts: • Potential: Air pollution, Biodiversity loss (wildlife, agro-diversity), Desertification/Drought, Floods, Food insecurity, Global warming, Loss of landscape • Socio-economic Impacts: • Visible: Displacement, Land dispossession, Loss of landscape/sense of place • Potential: Loss of livelihood, Militarization and increased police presence
