2. Introduction
 Conservative Dentistry encompasses the areas of fixed prosthodontics,
operative & implant dentistry
 Radiography, which is the use of radiation to produce images of diagnostic
value, plays a vital role in conservative dentistry
 Its importance ranges from helping in the diagnosis process to assessment of
the quality and integrity of restorations
 Knowledge of the different radiographic techniques for different procedures
is important as the radiograph's usefulness is dependent on the utilization of
the correct techniques
 Adequate knowledge in radiographic appearance and characteristics of a
carious lesion is essential for proper interpretation

3. Radiographic Techniques used in Conservative
Dentistry
1. Bitewing
 This is performed using a bitewing x-ray and demonstrates the
crowns of both maxillary and mandibular teeth of the area of interest
 It also demonstrates the crestal bone
Indications
 Detection of dental caries i.e, Interproximal caries in early stages and
Secondary caries under restoration
 Monitoring the progression of dental caries
 Assessment of existing restorations ie, overhangs, recurrent caries

5. Bitewings can also be used to classify caries as
 Stage 1 - Incipient
 Stage 2 - Moderate
 Stage 3 - Advanced
 Stage 4 - Severe

6. 2. Periapical Radiograph
 This demonstrates individual teeth and the tissues around the root
 It shows about 2 to 4 teeth and the alveolar bone
Indications
 Detection of apical infection
 Assessment of the periodontal status.
 Trauma to teeth and associated alveolar bone - root or bone fracture
 Assessment of root morphology
 During endodontic treatment
 Postoperative evaluation of implants
 Preoperative assessment and postoperative appraisal of apical surgery

8. 3. Occlusal Radiography
 In this technique, an occlusal film is placed on the occlusal plane
 Depending on the projection, it can demonstrate the anterior part of the
maxilla and the upper anterior teeth (Upper Standard Occlusal),posterior
part of maxilla and posterior teeth on one side (Upper Oblique) and
lower anterior teeth and mandible (Lower 45 degrees Occlusal)
Indications
 Periapical assessment of upper anterior and posterior teeth
 Assessment of fractures of anterior and posterior teeth
 Evaluation of the extent of cysts
 Periapical assessment of lower incisor teeth
