Those who opted to keep the death penalty did so because they thought that it
would act as a discouragement for would be criminals and to keep the community
safe. In theory it seemed clear cut, but does it work? America has had more violent
crimes this century than in any other time in its history. The only real point that

Summary Of The Story Eveline Essay

There are many ways to interpret the short story Eveline ; however, I feel this story
is very meaningful. In the story, the 19 year old Eveline lives at home with her
father and works at home and in their store in a small town in Dublin, Ireland. Her
brother Ernest has passed and Harry was in the church decorating business and would
help the family out by sending money. Eveline worked and would give all of the
money she earned to her father. When her father did give her money, Eveline was
expected to use that money to buy dinner so she could cook later that evening. In
the beginning, Eveline s father was more kind towards her, but after the mother
and his son had passed, he took out his anger on Eveline and the other siblings.
Eveline had taken her mother s place, helping her siblings, cleaning, and cooking.
At times she had fell under her father s violence. At one time he threatens Eveline
by saying what he would do to her only for her mother s sake. (Joyce 598)She felt
she had no one to protect her. When Eveline talks about her childhood she says
how everything used to be and how everything has changed, also how everyone has

The Supreme Court Case Loving V. Virginia
It is hard to believe that it has only been 48 years since the landmark 1967 Supreme
Court case Loving v. Virginia, where the court unanimously declared Virginia s
Racial Integrity Act of 1924 unconstitutional and ended all race based marriage
bans in the U.S. When I chose this topic for my assignment, I don t know if it was
the lack of knowledge or denial that led me to believe it was longer than 48 years
ago. To me, it felt like it was not a long time ago, and it was mindboggling because
that meant that when my parents grew up, it was illegal if you wanted to have an
interracial marriage, let alone relationship. That thought made me sad, because if I
had grown up in that time, it would be illegal to be with my boyfriend now. I am in...

it, showing how interracial marriages have grown and its acceptance. According to
an article in Yahoo News in 2012, interracial marriages in the U.S climbed to a new
high, 4.8 million a record 1 in 12 marriages (8.3% nationwide). The percentage has
grown almost twenty times since its legalization in all 50 states. A Pew Forum
survey data also found that a record number approved of interracial marriage,
however 14 percent of people still don t. For example, a poll taken in 2011, almost
half of the registered Republican Mississippi voters said they thought interracial

Follows verbal directions give me the cup (12 18 mos.) It has been observed that
Teddy on multiple occasions has followed verbal directions. On 10/10 Teddy finds
his shoes sitting on top of the counter so he reaches up and grabs them and walks
around with them. Erica then calls Teddy over and asks him to give his shoes to
her. Teddy walks over and looks at the shoes then to her, before handing the shoes
to Erica like she asked. Another example was on 9/19 when Teddy was playing
with the chain toys. He was playing and was having some difficulty figuring out

As I Lay Dying is a novel by William Faulkner that chronicles the journey of the
Bundren family (Anse, Dewey Dell, Darl, Jewel, Cash, and Vardaman) to bury their
recently deceased mother, Addie, in Jefferson. Throughout As I Lay Dying, Faulkner
treats Darl as the de facto narrator of the novel, endowing Darl with the most
passages in the noveland endowing him with an omniscient perspective of the

the train, laughing, down the long car laughing, the heads turning like the head of

body experience and lack of familiarity towards himself. He also describes the other

Out of the three stories, The Dogs Could Teach Me, The Sniper, and The Flowers,
The Dogs Could Teach Me by Gary Paulsen best demonstrates description. This
proves to be true through Paulsen s consistency of descriptions throughout the
entire story, unlike The Sniper. The Dogs Could Teach Me begins with, There was
a point where an old logging trail went through a small, sharp sided gully a tiny
canyon . . . It might have been a game trail that was slightly widened or an old foot
trail that had not caved in. Likewise, Liam O Flaherty starts out The Sniper by
writing, Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that
shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the
streets . . . However, by the third paragraph of The Sniper O Flaherty scrivens, He
was eating a sandwich hungrily. He had eaten nothing since morning. He had been
too excited to eat, while Paulsen continues the same pattern of writing saying,

pieces of writing above, the reader gains a clearer picture of the ambience
surrounding Paulsen in The Dogs Could Teach Me than of O Flaherty s character
eating a sandwich due to the shift of focus O Flaherty decides to take. Paulsen s
main goal out of the two examples above was very evidently to describe these
situations, howbeit, O Flaherty s was not. Since the author of The Sniper decides to
turn to action based writing instead of creating vivid pictures in the third paragraph,
it causes The Dogs Could Teach Me to become a better example of descriptionthan
The Sniper.
Paulsen also chooses to incorporate a variety of figurative language into the short
story The Dogs Could Teach Me, whereas the author of The Flowers does not, taking
Paulsen s descriptions to the next level . For instance, a simile that appears in

In the allegorical novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boys get
in a plane crash on a deserted island and it becomes the ultimate race for survival.
The boys decided to vote for a chief, but there is discord because everyone doesn t
respect his leadership. The events that follow result in two factions which changes the
island into a tense battle between opposing groups, that work against each other, and
result in tragic consequences. The elements of nature including windair and humidity
reveal the shift between cooperation and fighting. These elements change to reveal
the author s message message that a crisis brings out the insignificance of mankind
and his or her resourcefulness. Wind, air and humidity change from calm and
peaceful which reflect the boy s initial feeling on the island, to stronger winds which
reflects the disagreements between the boys , then to powerful thunderstorms storms,
rocks crashing and huge gusts of winds that reflects the struggle for life and death .
Even though wind, air and humidity don t seem initially seem significant, reading
below the surface, these elements of nature provide foreshadowing of further events.
In the beginning of Lord of the Flies, wind air and humidity have roles in setting the
mood and tone that change throughout the book. Although the boys were nervous
and scared when they first got on the island, they start to appreciate the scenery and
enjoy the beauty of nature and it allowed a little

often have more experiences and thus are more objective when choosing a mate.
