A questionnaire about the hip hop genre received 100 responses. For age, the largest group (46%) was between 17-19 years old. The majority (55%) of respondents were male. Most respondents were of African or Caribbean descent. Common interests included sports like basketball and music, especially rap. Respondents expected typical hip hop settings to be urban or rural with costumes including jeans, jackets, and jewelry. They also expected music videos to focus on narrative themes and address social issues.

1. Are you a fan of the Hip Hop genre?
Out of 100 responses, 64% of candidates said yes. 36% said no.
2. Which category below includes your age?
My results concluded that:
36% of responses were of 14-16 years of age.
46% of responses were 17-19 years of age.
18% of responses were 20-22 years of age.
3. What is your gender?
Collectively, 55% of my audience is male, while 45% are female.
4. What is your ethnic background?
Responses established that the majority of my audience are of
African or Caribbean lineage. Many are also mixed race. A smaller
percentage are Caucasian. Based on these results, Riley himself could
potentially generate interest from the audience, as his mixed
Caribbean and Caucasian heritage appeals both to blacks and whites.
5. Do you have any hobbies or interests?
Responses to the question highlighted that my audience favored
sports such as Basketball, Football and Baseball. A prominent portion
of my audience enjoys music intently, especially rap, so a focus on
providing good music will be key. A few stated having an interest in
documentaries, so provoking thought and creating an engaging video
are key.
6. What are your expectations of the Hip Hop genre in regard to
costume, setting and props?
2. General consensus showed that urban, dilapidated, or even isolated
rural settings were thought to be conventional by the public. Skinny
jeans, leather or varsity jackets, high top trainers, work boots,
jewelry and urban fashion trends (such as the wearing of bandanas)
are also thought to be commonplace costume for Hip Hop artists.
Many also noted that costume change was conventional. Props such
as money, cars, weapons and microphones are cited as being
“staples” of the genre.

Answers revolved around the idea that the artist share personal
experience within their music and accompanying videos. The
portrayal of negative aspects of life, and rising to the top despite
them are themes the public expect to see in Hip Hop music.
8. What do you expect of the Hip Hop genre in regard to music
videos?
Collectively, results showed that a strong focus on narrative is
pivotal. A few answers stated that where before, Hip Hop music
videos were about the exploitation and glorification of wealth. They
continued to explain how the industry had changed, and that socially
conscious themes, sensitive topics, original concepts and controversy
are more conventional of modern Rap videos than the stereotypical
“rags to riches” formula.
9. What do you like about Hip Hop?
Many stated that Hip Hop relates to them ethnically and culturally. A
smaller percentage noted its rising popularity, increasing complexity
both instrumentally and vocally, and how it relates to the younger
generation, acting as a form of social commentary.
